This AIB Insights issue features four articles related to the topic of sustainability and stakeholder management. These topics have gained increased prominence in the international business field over recent decades. Moreover, it has become evident that these issues are multidimensional in nature, and as such, require attention by many constituencies within the international business arena. The four papers in this issue each address a distinct element of these topics from the perspectives of marketing, corporate governance, expatriate management and teaching. While the articles individually consider different aspects, collectively, they provide evidence of the complex nature of these issues.

Against the backdrop of an uncertain and complex international environment that grand challenges, such as rising inequalities, climate change, and infectious diseases, have shaped, educators must be able to prepare students to be capable of tackling a multitude of upcoming global issues. Anticipatory competencies (i.e., futures literacy) could be key to navigating these multiple seas of uncertainty. Moreover, understanding the potential of futures studies and applying it to international business could help our fellow educators to equip students to navigate uncharted territories, bringing creativity and imagination to the IB classroom.

While UK/US firms, in response to efforts to become more sustainable and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals, increasingly have been adopting a stakeholder model of corporate governance, the shareholder model that has dominated governance for the past several decades still exerts a great deal of influence over how UK/US firms behave. By contrast, Japan’s traditional model, emphasising community and long-term stability, lacks transparency. Recently, Japanese firms have begun aligning with UK/US governance, but this paper suggests the emergence of diverse sub-models, combining both models’ elements, will define the future. The case of Fujitec Ltd. and Oasis Management offers valuable insights for managers, policymakers, and practitioners to navigate international corporate governance complexities, support informed decision-making, and encourage effective stakeholder engagement.

Given the rise in both the type and volume of uncertainty in the global business environment, MNCs face challenges in realizing the tools and skills necessary to foster both their own resilience and that of the communities in which they operate. The articles in this special issue aim to provide guidance to multinationals and other stakeholders on building international business and societal resilience in an uncertain global environment. The introductory editorial article outlines the complexity of resilience-building and discusses different types of resilience relevant to MNCs. It then overviews the six articles in the special issue, which relate broadly to the themes of supply chain resilience, global disruptions and volatility in the external environment, and organizational resilience.

This article explores two contrasting psychological constructs unique to base of the pyramid consumers (admiration for economically developed countries and animosity toward developed countries), and how MNEs could use insight on these two constructs effectively when faced with the decision to elect either global or local brand positioning strategies. A three-step model is proposed for MNEs faced with such tasks. This article not only advances the importance of understanding the complexities of base of the pyramid consumers, dispelling the notion that such consumer groups are a monolith, but also provides guidance for expansion into such markets.

Prior literature on organizational resilience has been predominantly rooted in the perspective of “bouncing back,” in which scholars across different disciplines have explored resilience resources and capabilities in isolation. However, when faced with persistent threats, bringing a system back to its prior equilibrium can make it more vulnerable as each successive threat possibly weakens the efficiency of the resilience mechanisms identified concerning a previous threat. This insight provides an overview of the state-of-the-art research on organizational resilience and suggests that resilience in organizations demonstrates a Permeating Boundaryless Capability (PBC), enabling organizations to reflect, re-energize and re-organize multiple response paths across space and time from micro to macro levels. Furthermore, this insight argues that Complexity Theory, as the emerging paradigm, offers an alternative view for understanding complex causes and interactions that contribute to organizational resilience. Implications for the future of work in research and practice are discussed.

We identify potential opportunities for new insights as they pertain to natural disasters and to offer specific strategies and tactics for managing disaster risk. Given the increase in the number and severity of disasters in many parts of the world, learning to prepare for, and respond to, disaster risk is likely to become a critical core competency for managers over the coming years. The private sector is likely to play a vital role in mitigating disaster risk for the communities in which they operate. Companies that are better prepared may not only reduce business risk, but also maintain business continuity.

The proliferation of global crises has sparked MNCs’ interest in developing global managerial resilience to withstand economic, health, and climate crises. While resilient employees are more adept at recovering from unexpected or disruptive events, guidelines on how to develop global managerial resilience remain obscure. Drawing from practitioner and academic sources, we speak to international human resource and mobility leaders in MNCs offering recommendations on how to anticipate and manage disruptive events across individual, family, organizational, and exogenous layers across the expatriation experience. Doing so nurtures a pipeline of globally mobile talent able to thrive in complex international work environments.
