Over the past decade, a number of companies have tried and failed to commercialize biobased production of acrylic acid , a monomer used to make paints, coatings, and superabsorbent polymers for diapers. Despite those false starts, two projects are moving ahead for biobased acrylic acid or its precursors. LG Chem and GS Caltex hope to start up a demonstration plant in South Korea early next year that will produce biobased 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP), which can be dehydrated into acrylic acid. The plant will use LG Chem’s fermentation process and separation technology from GS Caltex. 3-HP can also be used to make biodegradable plastics, the companies say. In 2019, LG Chem announced a partnership with ADM to make acrylic acid from corn. LG Chem says the partnership with GS Caltex is separate and will use a different technology. Meanwhile, Låkril Technologies, a start-up that spun out of Paul Dauenhauer’s University of

In 2001, more than 90 nations signed a treaty to reduce or possibly eliminate the production and use of the so-called dirty dozen highly toxic chemicals that accumulate in the environment. These include pesticides such as DDT and chlordane and industrial compounds such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB). All these chemicals take decades to break down, get passed along the food chain, and are hazardous to humans and animals. Over the years, at least a dozen more persistent organic pollutants have been added to the treaty’s list . Orcas, also known as killer whales, are among the most affected marine animals . A recent study led by McGill University researchers found that the North Atlantic Ocean orcas they studied that mostly ate fish were less contaminated than orcas that preyed on marine mammals such as seals and dolphins ( Environ. Sci. Technol. 2023, DOI: 10.1021/acs.est.3c05516 ). In the Canadian Arctic Ocean,

The Biden administration has selected seven projects for funding in the US Department of Energy’s Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs program. The recipients, which are spread across the US, will each receive about $1 billion in federal money. When all seven projects are operating, they will produce 3 million metric tons (t) per year of low-carbon hydrogen and eliminate 25 million t of carbon dioxide emissions, the DOE says. At an event in Philadelphia announcing the funding choices, US president Joe Biden called climate change an existential threat to humanity and highlighted hydrogen’s ability to replace fossil fuels in heavy industries like chemical production . “When it comes to charging our cars or powering our homes, all we need is clean electricity . . . Rather than buying the antiviral R&D firm outright, Gilead will integrate the company’s expertise in the herpes virus and hepatitis B and D. Assembly Bio will be responsible for early-stage research and development; if Gilead opts into any programs, it will take on all further work.

The high-throughput experimentation company HTE is working with Stanford University chemistry professor Matthew Kanan on catalysts that make carbon monoxide from carbon dioxide. Metal-free reverse water-gas shift catalysts were tested for 3 months in HTE’s high-throughput units to get results that would have taken many years to obtain in his own lab, Kanan says . The ultimate hope is to be able to make chemicals and fuels from CO 2 emissions and hydrogen. Kanan says the performance of the catalysts has been encouraging for future scale-up.

The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the Pfizer ulcerative colitis drug etrasimod. The oral drug, trade named Velsipity, targets a subset of receptors for the inflammatory signaling molecule sphingosine-1-phosphate. Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory colon condition that can cause severe bloody diarrhea and abdominal pain. Patients can be treated with steroids, biologics, or JAK inhibitors. Pfizer says Velsipity has an edge because it is available as a once-a-day pill. Pfizer acquired the drug when it bought Arena Pharmaceuticals in 2022. The company is also developing etrasimod for Crohn’s disease and for inflammatory conditions of the skin, esophagus, and scalp.
