Objective To analyze the relation between the college entrance examination scores and the flight performance for Navy student pilots, and to support the improvement of screening standard based on the study. Methods By the scores of college entrance examination 1 225 Navy student pilots were descendingly divided into first-echelon score group, second-echelon score group, third-echelon score group and low score group, and their flight performance was tracked. The correlation coefficient between the college entrance examination scores and flight performance among different groups was analyzed. The percentage of pilot qualification was compared among groups. Results The correlation coefficient between the college entrance examination scores and flight performance was not statistically significant. No obvious differences on qualification rate between first-echelon and second-echelon score groups, and between third-echelon and low score groups were observed. The qualification rate between the pilots in first and second-echelon score groups, and third-echelon and low score groups was statistically significant (P<0.01). Conclusions The college entrance examination scores have predictive validity but the obvious correlation with flight performance. For selection purpose, seeking certain exam score level is necessary, but high score is not the only chased goal. More attention should be paid on the pilot professional test. Key words: Aviation; Entrance examination; Professional competence; Flying cadets

Objective To discuss the echocardiography diagnosis on the pilots with eustachian valve (EV) mecism and the clinical significance. Methods The eustachian valve mecism in 5 pilots was diagnosed by color Doppler ultrasound cardiogram, and the shape, position, motion, attachment point of the overlong venous sinus valve in right atria were observed and the influences on hemodynamics were discussed. The type, diagnosis, clinic significance and aeromedical determination of EV were concluded by reviewing literature in terms of it. Results There were 5 cases of pilots with EV mecism, and ultrasound cardiogram showed a light ribbon moving in the right atrium which length ranged from 35 to 47 mm and the width ranged from 3 to 4 mm. One side of the ribbon connected with inferior vena cava, and the other side extended to the interior wall of right atrium where the middle of atrial septum and the tricuspid valve annulus located at (one case associated with ventricular septal aneurysm). There was no hemodynamics change detected by ultrasound cardiogram. Therefore, all 5 pilots were qualified for flight. Conclusions Ultrasound cardiogram is an accurate, rapid and convenient method to diagnose EV mecism. EV remaining in right atria commonly has no clinical manifestation, but associated with thrombosis, arrhythmia, catheter entrapmen in the interventional therapy. Even the pilots with EV usually have no clinic manifestation and no subjective symptoms in flight, and their flight endurance is seemed in good condition. But the close supervision and periodical follow-up are still suggested. Key words: Vena cava, inferior; Echocardiography, Doppler, color; Eligibility determination; Pilots

Objective To review the conception and tests of stereovision and its application in clinical medicine and physical examinations for military pilots at home and abroad so as to provide theory basis of improving stereovision tests applying to military pilots. Literature resource and selection The related articles published at home and abroad. Literature quotation Forty published references were cited. Literature synthesis The concept, classification and examination tests of stereovision were reviewed. Tests for reading distance stereovision mainly included: Lang stereotest, Yan′s randot stereotests, Frisby stereotest, Randot stereotest, TNO stereotest and Titmus stereotest. The Howard-Dolman′s apparatus, synoptiscope, Distance Randot test and Frisby-Davis 2 distance stereotest were applied to long distance stereovision examination. Stereovision tests played a key role in the detection and effectiveness evaluation of various ophthalmological diseases, such as strabismus, amplyopia, ametropia, etc.. Besides, it was also applied in military medicine like selection and conventional physical examinations for military pilots at home and abroad. Conclusions The polarizing/red-green glasses that subjects wearing in most stereovision tests may disturb the brightness and definition of the stereographs, and further the clinical determination.. More effective stereovision tests should be developed with specification of physical examination in Chinese military pilot to provide powerful support for flight safety. Objective To investigate the application of EZSCAN to assess the diabetes risk for pilots. Methods Data of the people examined in Air Force General Hospital were retrospectively studied. The diabetes cases were screened out. Eighty seven pilots who were without diabetes were selected as pilots group. Control group included 49 normal people. The EZSCAN test results, as well as blood sugar, lipid and blood uric acid of 2 groups were compared. Results The diabetes risk detected by EZSCAN had significant difference between pilots group and control group (χ2=17.171, P<0.01). Diabetes risk in control group was higher than that in pilots group (χ2=15.374, P<0.01). Triglyceride level in non-diabetes risk pilots was lower than that in control group (P<0.01). Blood uric acid in high diabetes risk pilots was lower than that in control group (P<0.01). Age were significantly correlated with the detection of diabetes risk in pilots group (F=10.935, P<0.01). The risk of having diabetes was increased with age. Conclusions EZSCAN system could be used in the diabetes risk assessment for pilots and has certain effect on pilot′s health assessment. Objective To investigate the characteristics of uncertainty decision making and to elucidate the theoretical basis for reducing the flight mistakes under mental fatigue. Methods One hundred and twenty male undergraduate military students were averagely and randomly divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group completed decision making tasks with induced mental fatigue while the control group directly accomplished them without the induction. The subjective fatigue and the task completion scores of two groups were compared. Results Mental fatigue was successfully induced: after simulated flight tasks the subjective fatigue scale scores of experimental group were significantly higher than those before the task (t=15.92, P 0.05) but the risk decision (F=10.89, P 0.05). Conclusions Mental fatigue makes individuals insensitive to risk (loss and punishment). The population of mental fatigue may easily pay more attention to short-term interests than to long-term losses. Mental fatigue could lead flying personnel to make impulsive and risky aviation decisions and endanger aviation safety.
