Gips – die wundersame Vielfalt schlichten Calciumsulfats

Mit Gips assoziiiert man zunächst wahrscheinlich seine Anwendungen im Baubereich etwa als Gipskartonplatten oder in der Medizin als Gipsbinden bei Knochenbrüchen. Unser Beitrag zeigt eine andere, unerwartet vielfältige Seite des häufig vorkommenden Minerals.

Die riesigen Gips-Kristalle auf unserem Titelbild befinden sich in einer der Höhlen der Mine von Naica im Norden von Mexiko. Die Bedingungen in der erst im Jahr 2000 entdeckten Höhle sind extrem: Die Temperatur beträgt fast 50 °C und die Luftfeuchtigkeit rund 90–100 %.

In this teaching unit, students use their own digital devices to determine the concentration of a dye in a sports drink. The method is gradually developed and carried out by learners, building their cognitive and practical foundations. A classic spectrophotometer is compared to a self-developed “smartphone photometer” setup. The teaching unit suggests that a deeper understanding is gained when students work out the necessary procedure and measurement principle themselves before becoming familiar with the actual device.

The history of spaceflight has been shorter than an average lifespan. Since 1961, around 600 humans have ever been in orbit. The extreme conditions of space add a new astronomical dimension to all the sciences known to us on Earth and require many protections and adaptations for a permanent space stay. It is foreseeable that the progress of manned space spaceflight, especially future new moon missions or even flight to Mars, will bring great impulses to the field of astropharmacy and astrotoxicology in the next decades.
