This study seeks to gauge the level of engagement and interaction of seven Ministries of Foreign Affairs from the Americas with citizens who requested assistance through Twitter during the first months of the covid-19 pandemic. Among the results obtained significant differences are identified, notably an increase in dialogic communication with respect to previous studies, explained by the state of emergency. In addition, countries that achieved high levels of engagement are those that focused their communication towards the user. Thus, different approaches to digital diplomacy are detected in its consular activities.

In this paper, we analyze the semiotic strategies through which Jair Bolsonaro’s body is represented in his Instagram profile. In order to do that, we build upon Landowski’s elliptic semiotic square, through which we display Bolsonaro’s different bodily postures and lifestyles. The diagram shows four bodily regimes through which the body of the current Brazilian president is portrayed: 1) the military body, 2) the buffoonish body, 3) the institutional body, 4) the popular body. The results show that the institutional body is the least present, while the other three reinforce Bolsonaro’s non-political identity and anti-establishment discourse.

This study analyzes the Netflix’s original series, Stranger Things, as an emerging collective intelligence concept. For this purpose, we conducted a semiotic analysis through three inductive and interpretative stages: using the Transmedia Intertextual System, identifying pre-existing references, and analyzing reactions in the fandom universe. The research found the production as a transmedia intertextual masterpiece that points towards an emphasized canonization of the media-nostalgic content and a sequential performance of the collective cultural memory.

In the year 2020, in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, Mexico’s government implemented health policies of “social distancing”. In this essay, we make a theoretical reflection on this policies’ effects on signs’ production. The paper begins with our definition of communicational habitus and the semiotic relationship with social distancing to analyze systems’ evolutionary control from a systemic-semiotic approach.

Based on contributions where communication, health and gender converge, an attempt is made to clarify how news and health frames are characterized on television, mainly addressing actors and actions. The objective is to observe the institutional presence, visibility and gender parity and perspective. Through the content analysis of 510 pieces from TV Azteca, Televisa and C7 –using Principal Component Analysis in SPSS as a tool– a major presence of political actors or the health system was found, a lesser presence of women and the absence of gender perspective in the information.

In recent years, a new cinematic environment has been taking shape, where the act of watching a film in a cinema had already been articulated as a minor commercial element within the film industry. But this trend, with the arrival of COVID-19 and the ban on commercial cinemas, was accelerated, generating the new multi-screen cinema: which has dominated the international scene in 2020, the first quarter of 2021, and which has introduced changes that will no longer be reversible. This may lead us to question whether we are still talking about cinema, in the sense it has been given since its invention.

The aim of this research is to analyze the use of immersive and brand journalism in the information published by RTVE Lab. The case study method has been used, which combines both qualitative and quantitative techniques. The results reveal that virtual reality (VR) is an attractive format for disseminating cultural news because it enhances the immersive experience of the user; yet approximately only 20% of VR is used to provide information about branded content.

Facing the concern of increasing incivility in political campaigns, we present a content analysis of negative advertising broadcast in four Mexican presidential elections, to explain the factors that shape their treats and likelihood of emission (2000 to 2018, N=108). Three factors are significant: competitiveness of the elections raises the likelihood of attacks; strict regulation makes them subtler, and party ideology determines the tactics followed.
