I offer a new interpretation of the first speech from the Lysias collection, On the Murder of Erastothenes. I propose that the adultery that led to Erastothenes’ death was consented and that, as such, this case is closer to prostitution than the seduction of a young wife by a Casanova. I believe that, in this way, the circumstances referred to in the narration and the argumentation of the speech are much better explained. This interpretation is related to the known legal regulations regarding prostitution in recent publications on prostitution in Greece, including that of female citizens, which was more common than is usually thought.

Although the anger of the princeps and the metus which it is supposed to inspire in the populus are generally blamed in the De clementia, it seems sometimes that a regulated anger and a timor temperatus are well-considered, which appears to be contrary to Stoic doctrine. This fact might be due to three features of the book: the importance of modus; Nero’s personality – whom the De clementia was directed to (this is probably the most important factor); the progressive clarification of the theory of clementia.

This article analyzes how two accounts of the indirect tradition of Alexander’s life (Plu., Alex. ; Ps. Callisth., β) re-elaborate the episode of the foundation ( ktisis ) of Alexandria, the Egyptian capital. An attempt will be made to show how both versions modify the sources transmission and inscribe in their own account the importance of the written word and bookish knowledge (which characterizes the city in the Hellenistic and Roman period) in the literal and literary circumstances of the foundation. Thus, the imperial world is predicted at the origin of the big city and promotes an image of continuity with the legacy of Alexander in the imaginary of the literary Alexandrias.

Atlas is a very complex mythical figure. A rebel Titan in epic tradition, he adopts the roles of both antagonist and helper of Herakles as the hero attempts to fulfill his task of stealing the apples of the Hesperides. Philosophers, geographers and historians consider him an Evemerized astronomer, a king in possession of fabulous riches, or identify him with a mountain. Often juggling positive and negative traits, Atlas’ various incarnations are connected to different themes such as divine genealogies, spatial and cosmogonic landmarks, Eastern influences, abundance in cattle and usurpation myths, which are all part of the image of the regions north and south of the Strait of Gibraltar created and spread by Graeco-Roman civilization. In this article, we propose a study of the literature and iconography related to this mythical character, as a way to give a different perspective to research about the mythical and literary geography of that area.

The 3th century grammarian Cassius Longinus in his introduction to the commentary to Hephaestion’s On Metre (Ἐγχeιρίδιον πeρὶ μέτρων) mentions a writer on meter named Odysseus (Ὀδυσσeὺς ὁ μeτρικός), who is not known in any other source. This paper aims to identify this author and give a satisfactory explanation to his mention by Longinus. However, the peculiarity of the name, which is not attested as anthroponym out of the epic genre, and its notice in Longinus, who in his commentary only quotes technical authors used as direct sources, have led us to propose a textual correction, Διονύσιος ὁ μουσικός, which, as I shall try to prove, is paleographically plausible and consistent from the point of view of the identification.

A fresh look at Hera’s special relationship with sea-voyages and storms establishes the mythical and religious background of Sappho’s prayer to Hera in the «Brothers Poem». The explanation for her involvement in such situations reveals her double role as goddess of marriage and of sovereignity. This analysis adds to our understanding of Sappho’s request.

This article aims to improve and complete some reconstructive proposals already existing that relate the myth of the Roman God Mithras' birth from a rock with other traditions, namely some Hittite myths or some legends from Minor Asia. By including data from Hittite Theogony and Rig- Veda and integrating them in a set together with the iconographic information from Roman Mithraism and Sassanid Persia, I propose an Indo-European origin for the myth of the God born from a rock.

This paper analyses the combinations of arguments within the verb cogo ‘to force’. They are organized in three semantic domains, the one of gathering-put together —cogo 1—; the one of forcing —cogo 2—; and the one of collecting — extorting (money) — cogo 3—. These domains yield several Predicate Frames. Some of the combinations are explained from verb lexical features (cogo 1x and cogo 2), but other ones seem to be rather collocations (‘to gather olives’, ‘to collect money’). Syntax of cogo has a transitive frame with an argument of Direction (cogo 1), projected as an event (Infinitive) in cogo 2. Syntax of cogo 3 reflects an alternative conceptualization of the force dinamics. Conceptual relationship among PFs is articulated from the facet of ‘coaction’ and completed by the one of ‘resistence oposition’; this combination sets the verb in a clear sphere of causativity.

This article discusses the etymology of Greek πeρίναιος (also πeρίναιον, πeρίνeος, πeρίνeον) ‘perineum’. The etymological dictionaries endorse Meister’s derivation from the medical term ἰνάω ‘evacuate, purge’, but this is unlikely to be correct. Instead, it appears to be a derivative of πeρίς ‘penis’, with possible contamination from πηρίς ‘scrotum’.
