This document is part of the doctoral thesis defended in 2022, being a theoretical discussion about the Absorptive Capacity and the Sustainable Performance of organizations and their relationships. At the time, 2018, the thesis project was based on questions such as: “What mechanisms allow organizations to acquire external green knowledge?” or “what triggers the need to acquire green knowledge in organizations”? The theoretical reviews indicated the following question: which mechanisms of social integration, and triggers of organizational absorption capacity, contribute to the sustainable performance of organizations? The discussion provided by a content analysis, based on articles indexed in SCOPUS and WEB of SCIENCE, allowed the description of the mechanisms of social integration and the triggers of the absorptive capacity in relation to the acquisition of green knowledge. In addition, this article identified that employees' mental models, processes and routines directly influence activation triggers and social integration, consequently, Green Absorptive Capacity.

The Brazilian cultural heritage built is constantly at risk and finds in preventive conservation a means for its protection. This article discusses what contributions preventive conservation offers to a sustainable public policy of built cultural heritage? To respond, it is necessary to understand how preventive conservation is linked to the implementation of a sustainable public policy for the built historical heritage. In order to improve artifacts that solve problems, two governmental proposals for preventive, Brazilian and Spanish conservation were contrasted. It has been shown that the practice of preventive conservation is strongly linked to a sustainable public policy. The Spanish model is aligned with the principles of sustainability, contrasting significantly with the Brazilian model. The study contributed to the scientific research of applied models, having as contribution, practical and social, the indication that the Brazilian model lacks improvement, so that it is used as an effective and sustainable artifact.

The search for sustainable consumption alternatives has led both the productive sector and academia to delve deeper into the topic of Product-Service Systems (PSS). In this sense, this article presents an overview of research groups in Brazil that mention PSS, and among them, those that also address the topic of sustainability. Using the systematic literature review method, searches were carried out in the Directory of Research Groups of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development. Thirteen groups were identified, of which nine also mention sustainability at some level. The analysis allows us to perceive that the groups are concentrated in the southern region of the country and in the field of Production Engineering. With these data, the purpose of this article is to understand the current state of academic research on PSS in Brazil.

This article aims to gather information about the dimensions of Industry 4.0, its concepts, pillars, and applications, conceptualizing them within the world and Brazilian reality. For the theoretical basis, information was transmitted through an unsystematic and qualitative bibliographical review of the literature available in newspapers, proceedings, and books. As a result, this text brings a union of information about Industry 4.0, its benefits and risks, as well as different views of the results of its application. In addition, this study points out obstacles to its implementation in the Brazilian Industry, such as lack of investment and labor issues.

Climate change is a natural process on the planet. However, human actions such as consumerism, deforestation, excessive waste production and the unbridled emission of polluting gases impact this process, causing catastrophic damage. In view of this alarming scenario, this article addresses the design process of an educational physical game with an emphasis on climate change and its impacts in the social sphere. It is an intuitive method of promoting knowledge and sensitizing the child and youth population: the future generation. The project was guided by the design methods addressed during the Design Methodology discipline of the UFSC Product Design course.

Contemporary jewelry is characterized by a greater appeal to sustainability attributes, turning its attention to current needs. In Municipal Solid Waste treatment, one of the main associated issues is the lack of interest in the commercialization of certain sorted materials, which have almost zero commercial value. Thus, increasing the value of waste can be a tool to enable its use as secondary material, which is a practice that should be encouraged in the teaching of disciplines associated with Design courses. This article covers the theme of design experiments with a focus on sustainability and is aimed at jewelry education. Three projects developed by students are presented, which include the use of problematic materials, i.e., which have no commercial interest and would be wasted, even after selective collection. The projects include the processes of problem definition, research, and experimentation, for the development of jewelry which include as a highlight material: glass, aluminum from coffee capsules, and naturally dyed wood. The examples demonstrate that sustainable design practices can be carried out even by hand and can bring direct benefits by valuing waste.

This paperk aims to identify the repercussions on the aesthetic dimension of architectural solution strategies that aim to achieve more sustainability in buildings. The methodological course included a bibliographic investigation based on a qualitative approach with a bibliographic and iconographic survey. The qualitative approach applied the inductive method from the observation and analysis of specific themes to arrive at a comprehensive analytical framework. The article deals with how sustainable projects can generate changes in the emotional impact of buildings on people, speculating on the relationship between an aesthetic of sustainability with issues of social responsibility and the contemporary way of life, influenced by the challenges of preserving the planet. It deals with an issue already raised by some authors that the search for a timely characterization of sustainable architecture can exert a seductive power, stimulating its greater acceptance by professionals and society. The references and disclosures of sustainable architecture were extracted from specialized media publications to, based on their images, identify possible aesthetic distinctions in relation to conventional architecture, that is, without concerns with sustainability. In the end, it is conjectured about the convenience of aesthetic disclosures from the point of view of so-called sustainable architecture due to its educational character, collaborating in the dissemination of concepts and knowledge related to it.

The community of biodesign (interspecies design collaborations) seems to be heading toward solid self-organization and formalization. Some authors speculate that the approximation to biology could mark the design practice of the 21st century. It seems relevant to understand how teaching and learning are happening in biodesign to develop how it could be further introduced in design curricula. It doesn’t seem that an analysis of formal education was made yet. To address this research gap, this paper aims to understand the formal education scene in biodesign through an analysis of some of the main biodesign courses and programs. The methodological strategy is a systematic and a narrative review through a popular search engine. 16 results were analyzed: 1 Masterclass for Professionals, 8 courses, 1 undergraduate course (Major), 4 master’s, and 2 Ph.D. programs.

This article presents and discusses the use of 3D printing for the development and production of medical equipment (EMH) in terms of legal, health and performance implications. Aspects of intellectual property and compliance with health requirements contained in Anvisa's RDC No. 751/2022 are discussed. The results of the bibliographic-documentary research indicated that there are gaps in understanding in relation to the three aspects mentioned above, which include doubts about the legal limits of using Reverse Engineering (RE) in the development and production of EMH, as well as the reach and scope of the RDC Nº 751/2022, but also the possibility of framing 3D printing in hospitals in the form of research and systematic study, which is contemplated in this resolution.

In Brazil, civil construction is one of the sectors that consumes the most energy and generates waste. Therefore, the use of wood has been an alternative to this problem, since it is a renewable and sustainable material. The wood frame makes it possible to align the exploitation of wood and the technology of an agile and clean construction. Despite the growing debate for the dissemination of the use of wood frame in Brazil, it is not so explored, due to lack of knowledge of the technology, labor qualification and prejudice with the material. This work aims to verify, through a bibliographic review and regulations, the use of wood frame, and to understand the processes of cultural acceptance or rejection of this innovation.
