A method of the coherent near-field sounding of multilayered dielectric structures is studied. It is based on field measurements with subwavelength probes (emitting and receiving) that are spaced in the near-field zone above the upper layer of the studied structure. It makes possible to achieve a subwavelength resolution at the control of the layers' depth. Especially high resolution can be achieved using the resonant response. The developed approach can be used, for instance, for the monitoring of epitaxy of multilayered heterostructures using SNOM techniques.

We report the spatial anisotropy of the acoustooptical figure of merit M2 in LiNbO3:MgO and GaP crystals. The analysis is based on the indicative surfaces being calculated for different geometries of the acoustooptical diffraction. Basing on these results the most efficient geometries of the acoustooptical cells made of these crystals are determined. It give a possibility to increase the application efficiency of LiNbO3:MgO and GaP crystals as sensitive elements for acoustooptical high-frequency control of powerful laser irradiation.

We considered the possibility of the creation of Faraday rotator for optical switch on the basis of ferrite-garnet film with the "angular phase" magnetic anisotropy. The Faraday effect was researched under the extending of light in the plane of the film in the direction of the plane projection on axis of hard magnetization. Under the magnetization of the film by the field saturation of ≈ 50 Oe specific Faraday rotation in it with the wavelength of 1.31 and 1.55 µm was 46.4 h 34.8 °/mm, respectively. The degree of polarization on the exit of the rotator reached 0.98.

Polariton modes in quantum-well traps for Bose-condensation of excitons are studied. It is found that some modes can become unstable and start lasing due to exciton spectrum narrowing during condensation. A model of such lasing is developed, showing different lasing regimes and possible coherent features of recombination emission of excitons.

The scattering of Gaussian beam on the metamaterial slab with negative refractive index is considered. Modeling is based on the spectral decomposition of the beam field in plane waves. The effect of different parameters on the polarization characteristics of the electromagnetic field reflected from the metamaterial layer and transmitted through it is investigated. The possibility of control of the beam polarization is shown.

Nanosize thin flat silver strip in the air is considered as an optical resonator. The scattering characteristics of the H-polarized electromagnetic wave diffraction are analyzed using the decoupled singular and hyper-singular integral equations (IEs) for the electric and magnetic surface currents on the strip. IEs are discretized with the aid of the interpolation type quadrature formulas. This algorithm, also known as the method of discrete singularities (MDS), is numerically efficient and guarantees fast convergence and controlled accuracy of computations.

Numerical calculations of energy characteristics of quantum-well structures based on Si1−xGex-Si have been performed using the four-band k·p method. It is shown that varying the thickness of the active layer and the height and width of potential barriers one can control the frequency ω of optical transitions. The analytical expressions for ħω are established, which are in good agreement with the numerical calculations by the k·p method, exactly define the limits of changes in ħω.
