We demonstrate an explicit numerical method for accurate calculation of the scattering matrix, and its poles, and apply this method to describing the multi-channel holes scattering in multiple-quantum-wells (MQW) structures. The results of calculations show that in contrast to the single quantum-well case, at some values of MQW parameters the number of S-mat-rix poles may exceed that of the absolute reflection peaks, and at different values of parameters the absolute reflection peak corresponds to different resonant states. At some values of MQW parameters there is in fact a long-living over-barrier resonant hole state. Lifetimes of resonant states depend drastically on the quantum-well potential depth. In the case of sufficiently shallow quantum wells there is a single long-living resonant state.

Asymmetric multiple quantum well active regions for optically-pumped semiconductor disk lasers (OPS-DLs) are designed employing wave function engineering within GaAs/AlGaAs material system, which provide simultaneously good electronic confinement, large gain and effective carrier transport. Experimental investigation has shown that such an approach gives record values of the conversion efficiency among OPSDLs and provides high values of the output power.

Microscopic statistical theory of inhomogeneous broadening in InGaN/GaN quantum-well structures is developed. It is shown that inhomogeneous broadening can be described as energy-dependent daphasing time. Explicit relation between inhomogeneous broadening and spectral power density of the lateral interface potential fluctuations is derived.

The properties of the optical connection of single-mode fibers by laser beams counter-propagating from the ends of these fibers are considered numerically and experimentally. It is established that effective connection of single-mode fibers at the wavelength of 1.55 µm is possible during self-channeling and interaction of optical beams at 0.63 µm in a photo-polymerizing medium. It is shown by computer simulation and obtained experimentally that for the 1…2-mm-long polymer connector and the ∼15-µm radial displacement, the efficiency of the optical connection of the SMF-28 and CS-980 single-mode fibers in the photopolymerizable composite based on OCM-2 can achieve 80…90% and 50…60%, respectively.

Using the sol-gel technique, BaTiO3 was embedded in opal matrices that are the lattice packings of silica dioxide nanospheres for the first time. The room-temperature IR and Raman spectra clearly show characteristic vibrational modes of the ferroelectrically distorted TiO6 octahedra without any long-range order. Raman spectra bring evidence of a diffuse ferroelectric phase transition in the opal-BaTiO3 composite.

Outside the framework of the dipole approximation (with an accuracy of about υ/c) the effective interaction force between stripped uranium nuclei in the presence pulsed field of two laser waves is theoretically studied. Possibility of essential slowing-down of uranium nuclei after interaction with each other is obtained. The given phenomenon is stable, concerning minor changes of initial conditions and is caused by incipient magnetic currents.

The influence of In surface segregation and internal fields induced by polarization charges on the band structure on InGaN/GaN quantum wells is studied in the frame of 6×6 multiband model. The indium surface segregation leads to the blue shift of the transition energy (70 meV for the segregation length 1nm at both heterointerfaces) while the piezoelectric polarization itself causes the red shift. Joint action of both effects leads to the linear dependence of the transition energy on the width of the quantum well. The piezoelectric polarization prevails for the high indium amount, and the indium surface segregation is dominated for the low indium amount.
