Abstract Objective Evaluate the effectiveness of mobile applications developed for intervention in suicide risk in adults. Method Searches for articles were carried out in four databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and PsychINFO). For the meta-analyses, we used fixed effect modelling to assess the primary outcome. The PROSPERO register is CRD42020163876. Results After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, six studies remained in the systematic review, of which four were eligible to the meta-analysis. There was no difference, or a little tendency in favor of control condition (usual treatment) comparing with applications. Conclusion Applications can be as effective as standard treatments in reducing suicide ideation. The results should be interpreted with caution once all studies presented at least one bias in their study design.

Abstract Objective: The present study aims to understand the theoretical-methodological rationales which guide psychological care practices for family members of people with alcohol use disorders. Method: For this theoretical-reflective study we conducted a systematic search for literature review articles to learn about the modality of interventions, their theoretical-methodological frameworks and clinical or efficacy results. Afterwards, a complementary search for articles and book chapters was conducted to map and analyze the most used professional care practices and their theoretical assumptions. Results: We identified six theoretical-methodological rationales that guide the professional’s clinical reasoning in caring for family members, which are organized around key concepts about their emotional suffering: 1) family stress; 2) family dynamics; 3) behavioral repertoire deficit; 4) codependency; 5) inflexibility; 6) potential for psychological change. Conclusion: The identification of these rationales can aid professionals when planning their practices in a critical and informed manner.

Abstract Objective: The purpose of this study was to introduce psychoeducation as a strategy for building information on mental health, as well as to discuss its potential contribution to the decision of seeking treatment, treatment adherence, and decrease of mental disorder symptoms. Method: For this purpose, a narrative review of the literature was performed. Results: Results showed that psychoeducation contributes to the search for treatment by informing individuals that their suffering is the result of a treatable disorder rather than personal characteristics. Subsequently, it contributes to treatment adherence by communicating how it works and what results are expected. This contribution of psychoeducation to treatment adherence seems to reduce the symptoms of the disorder, i.e., the symptoms decrease because the individual is engaged in the treatment. Conclusion: We conclude that psychoeducation acts as a “gateway” for seeking treatment and treatment adherence, consequently decreasing symptoms.

Abstract Objective: Previous publications have focused on a leading pop culture phenomenon, Star Wars, to teach several issues in psychiatry, which can make understanding challenging themes easier. This article delves into matters of differential diagnoses regarding two psychiatric disorders. Methods: We examine and compare the symptoms and specificities of borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder in the light of the fictional villain of the films, Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker. Results and Conclusion: Our considerations of his diagnosis should be interpreted as an academic exercise with two main goals: to discuss the differential diagnosis between borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder in an illustrative, soft, and ludic way; and to teach how to connect one’s behaviors with diagnostic criteria - in this case, those related to borderline personality disorder.

Abstract Objective Chronic pain is an important health problem and affects both quality of life and mental health. This study assessed psychological inflexibility, pain intensity, quality of life, anxiety and depression symptoms, self-efficacy, and social support among patients with chronic pain. Method A quasiexperimental design was used to assess six adult participants pre- and post-group intervention (eight sessions) based on acceptance and commitment therapy. Results After the intervention, the patients experienced a reduction in psychological inflexibility, pain, and depression and anxiety symptoms and improvements in quality of life and self-efficacy. The quality of life and depression symptoms and the domains of quality of life and psychological inflexibility were negatively correlated. Conclusion Acceptance and commitment therapy is a promising treatment for the interdisciplinary treatment of the Pain Clinic.

Abstract Objective: The teacher’s motivation is associated with his/her achievements, health and well-being, which reflect on the quality of teaching. Based on the Theory of Self-Determination, validity evidence of an instrument to assess teacher’s motivation for teaching was developed, containing 26 items to be answered on a Likert-type scale. Method: The questionnaire Teacher’s motivation for teaching was applied online in a sample of 509 higher education teachers, 50.39% female and 49.41% male, with ages ranging from 25 to 73 years. Data were analyzed using Exploratory Factor Analysis, using the Parallel Analysis method. Results: Exploratory Factor Analysis revealed a two factors structure with a few structural problems that required the deletion of some items. The 17-item version of the teacher’s motivation for teaching was simple and the estimated adjustment indexes were very good. Conclusion: The high factor loadings obtained among the items and the two factors to which they clustered allow to consider them representatives of the constructs Autonomous and Controlled Motivation.

Abstract Objective The present study aimed to identify the risk and protective factors for the development of stress in a random and stratified sample of Brazilian federal highway police officers in the state of São Paulo (N = 202). Method The instruments used were a General Questionnaire (sociodemographic and occupational variables) and Lipp’s Stress Symptom Inventory for Adults. The prevalence ratio was used as a measure of association and the independent variables were organized into 8 models and inserted into a logistic regression model. Results A stress prevalence of 43.1% (95% CI = 36.2–50.0) was found, with most of the sample in the resistance phase (82.7%). The factors related to stress were leisure, educational level, degree of job satisfaction, low remuneration, suicidal ideations, insomnia, lack of training, and work-family conflict. Conclusion The results can influence actions aimed at controlling stress.

Abstract Objective This article aims to present a systematic review of the literature produced by Brazilian researchers, linked to the social and human sciences, who have studied homosexuality and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transvestite, Transsexuals, and Transgender population. Method The terms “homosexuality”, “homosexuality” and “LGBT” were searched in the following databases: Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences, Scientific Electronic Library Online, Electronic Psychology Journals and Index Psi Periodic. Results In all, 263 articles were found and analyzed using a descending hierarchical classification that resulted in six lexical classes. It was found that psychology was the area with most publications on the subject. Conclusion The emphasis of the publications has changed over time, from concerns about the origin of homosexuality to the struggles and conquests of civil rights. The results also point to a small number of articles on lesbians, transsexuals, and transvestites.
