Faces with larger eyes and double eyelids are perceived as more attractive than those devoid of these features. Moreover, eye bag makeup has become fashionable among nonprofessional lay young females to enhance the perceived size of their eyes. The majority of research on the influence of the upper eyelids on facial attractiveness has been conducted using artificially generated faces; however, research on facial attractiveness forming eye bag makeup remains unexplored. This study investigated the physical and mental attractiveness of real female faces with single/double eyelids and with/without eye bag makeup. The results indicated that faces with double eyelids were rated as more attractive than those with single eyelids. Faces with eye bag makeup were generally perceived as less attractive than those without them. While this was the case regardless of the type of eyelids for mental attractiveness, eye bag makeup only impacted the faces with double eyelids for physical attractiveness.

: An azimuth estimation binaural model of sound image for an audio listening environment in a car cabin is proposed. To improve the estimation accuracy of this model, a gammachirp auditory filterbank was used to extract the physical characteristics related to the in-cabin audio listening environment sound image azimuth. The effectiveness of the proposed method was confirmed by its higher level of correlation between the experimental and estimated values as compared to the frequency domain binaural model.

: In facial reconstruction by plastic surgery, masculine and feminine are one of the factors that affect the degree of perfection. It is useful to analyze the characteristics for creating a natural shape as a male or female. In this study, 3D models were created by measuring the facial shapes of Japanese men and women (75 men, 75 women). 100 cross-sectional images of the forehead were made for each person from the 3D model. These images and the gender were used as teaching signals, and the CNN was trained by them. Next, we visualized the characteristics found by the learned CNN using Grad-CAM, and performed curvature analysis on the characteristic parts. As a result, the male characteristic was the swell of superciliary arch and the female characteristic was the roundness of the frontal tuber.

In this study, we focused on brain activity that reflected the decision-making process of customers. We used the shopping simulation task as a model of daily shopping, in which a variety of product images were used as visual stimuli for the sequential delayed matching-to-sample paradigm. We recorded EEG data from 12 normal subjects and examined the event-related potentials (ERPs) in two conditions; the subject selected one (target) out of 8 products (nontargets) either “to buy” (positive condition) or “NOT to buy” (negative condition). We observed stronger ERPs to the targets than to the nontargets in both the positive and negative conditions. The magnitude of the response was, however, greater in the positive than negative condition especially around 400 ms after the stimulus presentation. These results suggest that such an enhance response of the ERP might be useful for the indicator of the purchasing intention of the customers.

: Focusing on the part where the laugh track is inserted from the highly representative sitcom of the United States and China, the common points between the United States and China regarding the point of laughter caused by “decoding the meaning of utterance” Differences are analyzed and considered. Use of “decoding the meaning of utterances” in the major classification items was found to be about 6 points higher in the United States. In the United States, it is a sub-category, “pride”, “unnatural metaphors and examples”, “explicit interpretation of what should be inferred”, “gap between real intention and tatemae”, “roundabout paraphrase”, “strange paraphrase”. In China, “pointing out the reality”, “detour”, “expanded interpretation” and “meaning is mediocre, implicature is dirty” were higher. The concept of “implicature premise”, “implicature consequence” of the relevance theory could be applied to the analysis of the insertion of the laugh track in “decoding the meaning of the utterance”.
