The appearance of PIM products bring a lot of harm into modern satellite communication systems. In this paper, the fundamental concept, mechanism and prediction of PIM are studied. And one mathematical model is given, which is able to predict high order PIM level by using low order PIM level.

A new series of RF electric and magnetic field photonic sensors have being developed at the Center for Measurement Standards (CMS) of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taiwan. The aim of this research project is to develop affordable optical electro-magnetic field sensors (OEFS and OMFS) for EMC measurement and monitoring purposes. Here we report for the first time the performance of these sensors.

NASDA (National Space Development Agency of Japan) has just finished the Earthquake Remote Sensing Frontier Project conducted since 1996 within the framework of the Earthquake Frontier Projects by the former STA (Science and Technology Agency). The main emphasis of NASDA's Frontier Project was the complete understanding of lithosphere-atmosphere-ionosphere (LAI) coupling by making full use of different kinds of observational items and finally we contribute to the short-term earthquake prediction. The most exciting finding from our Frontier project was the discovery of convincing evidence on the presence of seismo-ionospheric perturbations, which has been extensively investigated by using the subionospheric VLF/LF propagation, and several important findings have been presented, including the initial result for the Kobe earthquake and a few case studies from much data.

The FDTD method is used to study how shielding effectiveness varies with slot length, width and cavity size. The results show that slot resonance occurs when a slot perimeter reaches odd times of the wavelength of the incident wave and the shielding effectiveness becomes rather poor in such cases.

In this paper crosstalk between transmission lines. (TL) in special directions such as perpendicular and parallel is studied in the frequency domain and time domain via electromagnetic field (EMF) theory. Magnitude of crosstalk between the two states is compared. Regulations of when the peaks or troughs should occur are summarized, results are verified with that of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method.

The finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method is used to analyze shielding effectiveness of the infinite wire-mesh reinforcement, reinforced-concrete layer and concrete-only layer in a high power electromagnetic environment. Our research takes into account all the factors affecting shielding effectiveness (jointing of reinforcing steels' cross points, connection of the reinforcement hoops and natural defensive layers). Numerical examples concerning the analysis are given in this paper.

Surge arresters are important over voltage protection equipment in a substation. It is necessary to monitor the resistive leakage current of MOAs (metal oxide surge arresters) on line so that we can prevent faults from developing in time to avoid economic loss. It is reasonable to adopt the resistive leakage currents basic component, i/sub r/, and thrice component, i/sub 3r/, as metal oxide surge arrester indicators. These indicators can detect the aging phenomenon of a metal oxide surge arrester in time. However, the existence of harmonic voltages in the power system influences the indicator accuracy. We analyze this effect and put forward an improved compensation method to separate the resistive leakage current under the existence of harmonic voltage. Finally, according to these methods, we develop an on-line MOA resistive current monitoring system based on the bus-module.

Noise sources and fundamental mechanisms leading to radiated emissions from printed circuit boards (PCBs) have been analyzed. The use of photoelectric couplers at the input and output interfaces between PCBs and of image planes on the PCBs reduces common-mode radiation; the effectiveness has been proved to comply with GJB151A-97 EMI limits.

Traditionally, the electromagnetic protection ability of a system, such as filters, shielding enclosures, etc., is measured in the frequency-domain and expressed as insertion loss or shielding effectiveness. When the time-domain characteristics of the system are required to evaluate their pulse response, time-domain tests need to be conducted. However, it may not be convenient to carried out time-domain tests because of the availability of test facilities. Theoretically, suppose the system works in a linear range, its pulse response can be estimated from frequency-domain measured data. We evaluated this concept by experiments. A digital filter model of the system under test is used to approximate the measured frequency response and then employed to calculate the output of the system under pulsed input. The estimated pulse responses are compared with measured ones. Results show that it is possible to estimate approximately the magnitude and shape of the time-domain response by this approach.
