As one of the major theories in cognitive linguistics, conceptual metaphor has received lots of attention from scholars at home and abroad since it was first brought up. Metaphor is a cross-domain mapping from one concrete conceptual domain to another. Cognitive linguists recognize that metaphor converts complex and abstract concepts into intuitive and specific concepts, which is conducive to the understanding of abstract concepts and conducting abstract thinking. This is also why conceptual metaphor was widely used in economic discourse utilizing familiar concepts to help people comprehend abstract and obscure economic concepts. Based on the related theories of cognitive linguistics, taking economic passages about Chinese economy and business activities in The Economist as an example, this paper aims to find out and analyze some representative conceptual metaphors describing Chinese economy in economic discourse by the methods of quantitative and qualitative analysis with the hope to help ESP learners with their learning of economic discourse.

Popularity of gaming apps is gaining momentum across the globe. The locale of this paper is Indian scenario wherein the symbiosis of advertising and discursive practices has been gauged. The aim of this paper was to fathom the nuances of advertising praxis having celebrity endorsement as its locus. The paper uses Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as research methodology to analyse the linguistic (verbal and non-verbal) and ideological aspects of the selected eSports and Gaming advertising campaigns. A field survey was conducted on 500 college going students to study the impact of sample advertisements on the target audience. It was found that celebrity endorsers influenced lifestyle and buying behaviour of the target audience. The trends in brand endorsement are changing due to two reasons; first being the rising popularity of YouTubers over Bollywood stars and other sportspersons over cricketers and second being the guidelines issued by ASCI.

In the past decade, talent shows have gone viral in China. In talent shows, the interaction between the coaches and the contestants is a major attraction for audiences. The coach’s speaking style and pragmatic skills reflect their strategies for recruiting contestants and have influences on identity construction. Based on the Politeness Principle (PP), this study analyzes the utterances of coaches in the recruitment part of The Voice of China season 10. With the help of qualitative analysis software NVivo, researchers try to code the utterances to which PP is applied. Based on the results of the research, this study put forward four recruitment strategies, including Complimentary Strategy, Beneficial Strategy, Emotion Strategy and Modesty Strategy. Moreover, four identities can be constructed based on these strategies, including Amiable Identity, Rational Identity, Perceptual Identity and Modest Identity. This study provides insights into the identity construction of members within an organization from a discourse analysis perspective, especially in the context of talent recruitment and trainee management.

Admiring Silence is Gurna’s fifth novel, in which the protagonist has been in exile in British for nearly 20 years, traumatized by family and society and trapped in an identity dilemma, and finally reconstructs his own identity by recovering from traumas. This paper analyzes the individual trauma experienced by the protagonist and its deep-seated causes in Admiring Silence from the perspective of Trauma and Recovery Theory and explains how the protagonist recovers from trauma in the reconstruction of family and social identity. The thesis points out that the abandonment of self-values by the African diaspora in a foreign country will go no return, and that only by constantly reconstructing oneself can one truly mend one’s inner trauma.

Purpose: This paper tracks the hitherto poorly documented history of the ambulance service in Britain from early military history to the present day identifying the leaders who motivated change and through education and innovation provided significant developments in pre-hospital patient care. Methodology: Desk research and interpretation of social and medical issues raised.Findings: The ambulance service developed from an early military need through a period when monks offered care to the local population. Followed by philanthropists and local doctors adapting and funding practices developed elsewhere, to independent hospitals run by doctors offering inbound transport. Subsequently, political pressure forced local authorities to offer pre-hospital care and transportation to hospitals for the sick and injured. The war years saw a military concentration on pre-hospital care followed by the integration of the ambulance service into the newly formed National Health Service (NHS). The profession of the paramedic was formed, technical innovation in communication, transportation, and on-scene patient care encouraged standardization of service. The ambulance service is an integral part of the NHS providing essential pre-hospital medical care.Originality: A description of the social history of the ambulance service in Britain defining the context, role of education in the motivation for leadership and innovation.

Without the pressure to help more students to be competitive in College Entrance Examinations, teachers in secondary vocational schools are supposed to spend more time improving students’ communicative competence in English which is more practical for students’ future career. Although communicative language teaching (CLT) approach has been added to the syllabus for over 30 years in China, however, the implication of it is hardly witnessed in English classes in secondary vocational schools of science and engineering (SVSSEs). By handing out questionaries to eight English teachers and over 300 students in my school, four restraints which prevent the application of CLT in SVSSEs have been concluded which are knowledge restraints, restraints related to the educational system, restraints by students and restraints related to teachers’ attitude and concerns.

In this article, we will go over the elements of advertising that are essential to any successful advertisement. We will delve deeper into each of them to determine how it contributes to the message's dissemination and the persuasive effect that advertising aims to achieve. Scientific studies on advertising theory, advertising definitions, etc. have been actively conducted for a long time in Belarus, Egypt, and the UK. However, studies on the structural characteristics of advertising texts have only recently been published. Despite the fact that the importance of these components has already been established, it is still important to know what they are and what characteristics they each have. So that we could get a sense of the key elements that marketing and communication experts take into account, we focus on a list that will help us get to know them and learn about their characteristics.

Reading teaching is an integral part of college English teaching. Based on status quo analysis of college English reading teaching, this paper explores the application of OBE mode in college English reading teaching. Taking Unit 3 from College English III as an example, it first designs a unit teaching case from four aspects of definition, realization, evaluation, and application in the OBE chain. It then practices the above-mentioned OBE chain in the form of reading circle in the teaching class. The paper points out that college English reading teaching should adhere to the concept of being outcome-oriented and student-oriented. Reading teaching should also take into consideration students’ creativity and lay focus on quality education.

This study aimed to explore the effect of genre analysis activities in promoting writing competence of the “Results & Discussion” Section (RD) in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) thesis-writing class. At class, a series of genre-based activities were carried out to help students understand and analyze the move/step structure of RD of SSCI journal articles. Students’ academic research articles were collected at the beginning and end of the semester, namely marked as the first versions and the second versions, which were analyzed in two separate corpora. In addition, questionnaires and interviews were conducted to investigate students’ attitudes towards genre analysis activities. Research findings suggested that genre analysis helped enhance students’ writing competence of RD in their thesis writing. This study also contributed to providing guidance for academic writing teaching in postgraduate education.

The present study aims at investigating the pronunciation components in the prescribed English Language Syllabus for High Schools as well as the pronunciation instruction in some selected High Schools in Moundou, Chad, in order to determine the impact on learners’ production with respect to this phonological feature. The content analysis method was adopted for the investigation. Data were drawn from consultation of the National English Language Syllabus for High Schools in Chad, and 44 English Teachers’ logbooks for the 2021/2022 academic year. These logbooks were collected from 6 Government High Schools in Moundou. Two research questions guided the collection of data which were later on classified, put in numerical data and analysed within the framework of the Factors Affecting Pronunciation Theory. Results of the study revealed a total lack of pronunciation prescription in the English language syllabus and a zero percent representation of pronunciation related lessons in English language classes. Hence, it could be concluded that pronunciation instruction in English language lessons, to a greater extent, has been neglected in some High Schools in Chad. This has created enormous challenges resulting to poor pronunciation, segmental feature errors, and deviances in supra-segments, etc., in the speech production of learners.
