This paper explores the rich tradition of singing in Hausa culture, shedding light on its meaning, importance, and diverse manifestations. The study delves into the significant role of traditional singers, known as ‘makaɗan Hausa,’ who compose songs for various individuals and groups. It highlights the historical context in which singing played a pivotal role. The impact of singing during pre-colonial wars is explored, revealing how oral poetry and chants motivated warriors and eased the burden of handwork. Singing also played a crucial role in fostering cultural exchange, with Hausa praise singers finding themselves in non-Hausa environments, such as Ghana. Additionally, the paper sheds light on the significance of singing in the political realm. It generally provides a comprehensive exploration of singing in Hausa culture, examining its cultural, social, and political dimensions. It showcases the importance of singing in energizing individuals, celebrating professions, facilitating cultural exchange, and entertaining rulers. The Visual Grammar approach is effective in examining the communicative value of healthcare posters. As semiotic resources, these posters comprise both images and text for persuasive and informative ends. Previous studies have looked at multilingual health care texts and medical information leaflets using different approaches, but the focus here was monolingual healthcare posters written in English. Hence, this study analyzed five purposefully selected online healthcare posters meant for a Nigerian audience. It looks at the ways image and text cohere as syntagm within narrative and conceptual representations to form persuasive and informative messages, and the multimodal constraints on the healthcare posters as they serve communicative ends. A descriptive research design was adopted to analyse corpus from five online health care materials. Features of the materials were identified and classified according to manifested multimodal features before they were subjected to narrative and conceptual analyses. The way image and text cohere; their functions and communicative values were also discussed to highlight attendant constraints. Findings show that as a multimodal text the healthcare posters employ semiotic resources to project messages as either contextualized or decontextualized. Major and minor semiotic processes, achieved by image and text coherence, form both narrative and conceptual meaning-making units. Added to this informative value are colour variations and font size which are also employed as enhancers of detail, mood and contrast as well as attention drawing devices. Logos of sponsors give the health messages varying credibility values as rhetorical questions and advice-clauses serve persuasive ends. Thus, the study concluded that the communicative potential of a healthcare poster are hinged on semiotic resources that constrain readers’ or viewers’ perceptions on health matters.

Joking relationships meaning; Wasan Barkwanci or Taubasantaka in the Hausa language is a Hausa term referring to different forms of joking relationships, a cultural phenomenon that is played both among the Hausa people and to some extent, their neighbors. Joking relationships in their simple form exist between people who share kinship relationships. Prior to the British conquest of Hausa states and the subsequent imposition of colonial rule in the early part of the 19th century, notable Hausa states waged interstate wars of conquest for territorial expansion and gaining access and control of trading routes, to further enhance their revenue drive and economic viability. The British however halted these wars as a result of which peace prevailed and this brought about stability among the states. During peacetime, a joking relationship sprung up between the people of the warring states. Culturally, practitioners of similar but different occupations do engage in jokes between themselves, each claiming superiority, prestige, and worthiness of their trade over another. Culture being a dynamic phenomenon, joking relations as it relates to trade groups, were shifted to incorporate people who undertake the practice of new occupations that were introduced as a result of the contact between the British overloads and their Hausa subjects. Hence, joking relationships exist between masons and carpenters, between drivers and People who transport goods using camel. The main feature of these joking relationships is that the persons who engage in it are automatically related to one another such that one is entitled to say and do things to another without offence, which ordinarily when said or done to a different person will generate quarrels and misunderstandings. This paper is an attempt to examine this cultural phenomenon and its efficacy in bringing about harmonious relationships and social integration of Hausa people and their neighbors, which if properly harnessed will bring about national integration.

As an important part of Chinese literature, Chinese contemporary literature is a powerful force to promote Chinese culture to go out. However, in the cross-cultural context, the previous studies on Chinese contemporary literature focus on dissemination rather than acceptance. Domestic promoters are more important than foreign institutions. In view of this, this paper, based on The Leeds Centre for New Chinese Writing, which is a world public welfare organization for the independent translation and introduction of Chinese contemporary literature, investigates the characteristics and preferences of the research centre in the selection of authors and works in the introduction of Chinese contemporary literature from a macro perspective, and explores the factors affecting the cross-cultural acceptance of these works based on the comments of English readers.

San Mao (English pen name Echo), a famous wandering female writer from Taiwan, China, has influenced the growth of several generations of Chinese people, especially Chinese women, with her works and life experiences. Taking the English version of San Mao’s most famous work, Stories of the Sahara, as an example, this paper analyzes the English version, especially the translator Mike Fu's representation of San Mao's female image. The article holds that San Mao, as a narrator, bystander and witness of Saharan life, has a rich personal image, which is influenced by both eastern culture and western culture. Translator Mike Fu insists on "faithfulness" and has androgynous translation consciousness, which successfully reproduces the image of San Mao. Through the foreign translation platforms of China literature, such as Paper-Republic, and the promotion of foreign mainstream medias, the English version has gained more readers and comments, and San Mao has formed an irreplaceable female image through the understanding of different readers.

This article presents the relationship between students' belief in their ability to learn English successfully, and the values that English will bring them influence on two factors: (1) language learning outcomes. English and (2) participation in English courses is based on data collected from 1,207 students. The article analyzes the differences between male and female students on these measures. Belief in the ability to learn English successfully is closely related to English learning outcomes, while belief in the useful value of English is closely related to deciding to take English courses.

The study reveals the effectiveness of games in learing English vocabulary of non English major students at the University of Transport and Communications out. In this study, the majority of the students supported the use of games as the best way of learning English vocabulary as well as showed their positive attitude after the treatment, as detected by the tests, questionnaire and interview. From the research findings, several further studies as well as suggestions for teachers were made in the hope of improving the teaching and learning English vocabulary in Vietnam University.

Pronunciation is an essential skill that significantly affects the effectiveness of foreign language learning. However, the reality shows that incorrect pronunciation is still a big obstacle for Vietnamese students in general and students of the University of Transport and Communications, HCM city campus, in particular, in the process of learning English. Many students feel embarrassed when speaking English and have difficulty listening comprehension because of incorrect pronunciation. This article presents the research results on pronunciation errors of 100 non-language majored students at University and college at the University of Transport, HCM campus, analyzes the causes, and offers solutions to overcome the problem.

The Bangla text of the print advertisement is continuously being changed due to the influence of English for diverse reasons. This sheer impact may be termed as the Englishization of print advertisement. This paper analyzes the feature and frequency of the Englishization of Bangla sentences in print advertisements. Ultimately, this study scrutinizes how the Englishization of Bangla Print Advertisement works as an ideological apparatus for the capitalist regime. Data were collected from 50 advertisement taglines. The researcher selected advertisements directly from the widely- circulated national dailies in Bangladesh. The data were analyzed from the perspectives of Raymond Williams’s essay “Advertising: The Magic System” and cultural studies scholar Stuart Hall’s Encoding and Decoding Model of Communication. The findings of this research included: the romanization of Bangla texts, code-switching and code- borrowing in the Bangla texts, merging of English words with Bangla suffixes, both Bangla and English numerals in the same Bangla sentence, evidence of English and loan word acronyms in the same Bangla sentence. This research confirmed that the Englishization of Bangla print advertisements has developed further with time and has become an inevitable trend. Moreover, the Englishization of Bangla print advertisements is used to transform commodities into “fetishes”, which protects the interests of capitalism.

This paper examined the use of hedging in information subsidies about the Anglophone Crisis. More specifically, it sought to determine which hedging devices were used in government information subsidies about the crisis, establish the discourse and communication functions of these hedges, and determine the crisis response postures reflected through hedging. The paper adopted a documentation and records method to obtain 83 information subsidies (speeches, communiques, reports, policy statements, media statements or ‘outings’, press releases, press conference presentations, press kits, etc.) from twelve government institutions. These twelve institutions were purposively chosen because of their centrality to the government’s crisis communications about the Anglophone Crisis between October 2016 and December 20. Nvivo was used for content analysis of information subsidies. Quantitative and qualitative methods of data analysis, presentation and discussion were used. The study identified six categories of hedging devices which served varied discourse and communication functions. For example, approximators and rounders were used to distance the government from particularly controversial claims about key crisis issues; while contrastive conjunctions served to highlight support for government crisis management strategies, protect government credibility, and diminish the amount of crisis responsibility attributed to the government. Conditionals were used to express beliefs, claims and stances about Anglophone Crisis events in a way that restricts potentially controversial interpretations. Plausibility and attribution shields reduce the force of government crisis managers’ claims by signalling uncertainty towards crisis messaging content and attributing particular crisis-related beliefs or commitments to other stakeholders. These findings show the role of hedging in crisis communication about the Anglophone Crisis. Given the divergence in crisis response postures reflected, this study recommends greater synchrony in the use of hedging devices.
