In this paper, we propose a stand-alone mobile visual search system based on binary features and bag of visual words framework. The contribution of this paper is two-fold: (1) a visual word-dependent substring extraction method is proposed; (2) a modified version of the local NBNN scoring method is proposed in the context of image retrieval. The proposed system improves retrieval accuracy by 11% compared with a conventional method without increasing the database size.

In a free market economy, the preservation of cultural heritage sides inevitably needs visitors, i.e. customers. Germany has more than 2,000 castles from the medieval times; when palaces are considered as well, the figure is above 25,000. The competition is tough. For castles from the middle ages, customer relationship management (CRM) means to attract them, to entertain them on-site, and to motivate them to come back. Contemporary CRM of cultural heritage sites may deploy digital media technologies including augmented reality and game play. There is developed some systematic approach to CRM which is implemented for the castle Scharfenstein, Eichsfeld, Germany. The implementation is available by any customer free of charge.

Digital watermarking is a process of embedding watermark signal with its host image to prove its authenticity. In this paper, Embedding and extraction process are applied on the higher frequency domain of Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). Using DWT prior to the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) provides improved imperceptibility and higher robustness against Signal processing attacks. Arnold transformation is used to scramble the watermarking object for security purpose. This approach improves the similarity ratio and PSNR over previous schemas so provides efficient authentication.

Visible light communication using LED and high-frame-rate image sensor is one of the critical technologies for intelligent transport systems (ITS). However, current visible light communication system requires complicated and expensive devices, such as high-frame-rate image sensor. To provide high-speed visible light communication with existing simple devices, we propose visible light communication with image sensor of the low-frame-rate and polygon mirror. In our system, the fast-blinking visible light signal is obtained as residual image by low-frame-rate image sensor. We evaluated performance of the proposed system in experiment. The obtained results suggest that the proposed system could achieve data rate of 300 bps; 27 times faster than conventional communication system with image sensor of 11 fps.

In this paper, we evaluated the characteristics of the bone-conducted sound propagation in the human head through computer simulation using a reduced head model with finite element method. The model was made of three spheres, which represent the skin, skull and brain, and the brain was represented by the water for simplicity. The step response of the head was investigated to show that the sound propagation would be generated in the form of longitudinal and bending wave through the head. From the simulation results, the sound speed of the longitudinal and bending waves were approximately 1500 m/s and 260 m/s, and the latter was compatible with the previously measured sound speed of bone-conduction.

Howling control is a critical part of any public-address (PA) system. To detect a howling frequency of a PA system before having howling, the author has previously proposed an effective method based on spectral accumulation. This paper shows some results of the howling detection through a practical experiment. In this practical experiment, the proposed method was able to estimate the coloration frequency and eliminate the coloration by the notch filter.

Artificial three-dimensional (3D) video technology has generated significant interest in recent years. However, there are concerns about side effects such as eye strain that may result from viewing 3D video images. This visual fatigue is assumed to be related to a mismatch between convergence distance and focal length that occurs while viewing 3D content. In this study, we investigated the relationship between this mismatch and visual fatigue. Two subject groups completed an easy task while viewing a 3D image containing a convergence distance and focal length mismatch, and while viewing an image without such a mismatch. After the task, visual fatigue was evaluated using a flicker test and a simulation sickness questionnaire (SSQ). Experimental results demonstrated that viewing a 3D video image with the mismatch resulted in more visual fatigue than doing so without the mismatch.

For interpreting the emerging process of visually induced motion sickness (VIMS), we propose a multi-timescale autonomic regulation model that consists of trigger and accumulation effects with different timescales. As validation experiments, fifteen participants viewed a 2-min-long first-person-view video section five times (total 10-min) continuously. Measured biosignals were the RR interval, respiration, and blood pressure time-series to estimate the low-frequency (LF) and high-frequency (HF) power components and the LF/HF ratio. Then, we determined the trigger points and the sections that produced some sensation. The results showed that VIMS is first induced by specific trigger factors and increases depending on individual differences in autonomic regulation. The multi-timescale autonomic regulation model, which has independent coordinates for presence and VIMS and represents the short- and long-term effects, seems preferable for interpreting VIMS.

In this paper, we design a new mobile traffic warning triangle (MTWT) which consist five parts: distance measurement unit, reflective tracking function, LED indicate, emergency calling and embedded controller. The MTWT can track the white line in road side then move a fix distance and rise the LED indicate triangle. It also can detect the distance between two cars and alarm the driver. The GPS module let system understand its current location that makes it easy to calculate the movement orientation and to inform the relevant departments. The driver can call back the MTWT just use application software in the smartphone when system finish the notification.

A mobile robotic access point (AP) is proposed to provide better wireless network environment. This AP automatically searches and moves to the best position to provide enough radio power for all devices connected to the AP. We designed the mobile robotic AP and evaluate its performance in experiment. It was found that the proposed AP can increase radio power for all devices connected to the AP by searching the best position of the AP. The obtained result suggests that the proposed AP is suitable to provide comfortable Wi-Fi network environment in indoor environment.
