In this paper, the authors apply their lumped parameter model in order to simulate the behaviour of MHD generators. In particular they evaluate the performance of these devices taking into account the nonuniform distribution of the main physical quantities that affect the energy conversion (i.e. temperature, pressure, magnetic field and so on). In addition, the connection of MHD generators to high voltage AC lines is also analysed. The results of all simulations executed are shown and discussed.

This paper describes a generalized simulation model of the three-phase induction motor using the SIMULINK software package of MATLAB. The model is based on two-axis theory of revolving frame transformation. The model takes power source and load torque as inputs and gives speed and electromagnetic torque as outputs. Internal resistance of the power supply and magnetic saturation of the motor may also be accounted for.

This paper presents two methods to measure the electromagnetic signatures of induction machines. Measurements are particularly applied to a bipolar induction motor. First, an experimental study is developed. Then, theoretical computations are presented. The aim was to find a model able to represent properly stray magnetic fields outside the machine in order to reduce the signature.

This paper establishes a dq0 mathematical model to simulate the dynamic starting performances of a capacitor starting system. The model takes all the main parts of the capacitor starting system into account for the first time-including the transmission lines, the shunt capacitors and the motor. The model proposed in this paper can therefore be used to analyze capacitor starting systems accurately.

New optimal RCD snubber design equations for use with BJT-, GTO-, IGBT- and MCT-based switch-mode power converters are presented which specifically incorporate the transient stress effects due to circuit stray inductance. Based on these optimal design equations, analytical expressions for turn-off energy losses are obtained. The analysis presented in this paper is applicable for any power device; the MCT has been chosen here for demonstration.

The operating and maintenance evaluation of hydroelectric generators is undergoing radical change. New sensor technology and the application of expert systems are altering the way generator inspections are scheduled, altering the way in which generators are operated and maintained, and facilitating the implementation of new economic demands for generator operation with near-zero forced outages.

The authors have proposed previously a cylindrical rotor-type switched reluctance motor (SRM) which has short-circuited windings on the q-axis of its rotor. These short-circuited windings reduce the q-axis leakage flux and cause additional torque generation. This paper describes the performance of the motor together with a novel control strategy. Its validity is confirmed by experimental results.

A method for the efficient simulation of the steady-state performance of synchronous generators is proposed in this paper. The method is based on an indirect coupling of the finite element method and circuit models and provides the rated excitation requirement, complete load-angle characteristic and dynamic synchronous parameters. The implementation of the whole procedure can be realized conveniently by using commercially available and technically mature finite element packages. An application example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Much of the recent literature concerning the switched reluctance motor (SRM) is focused on motor performance prediction. In this paper, a mathematical model of an SRM is developed and its steady-state characteristics are computed. The given results, obtained by computer simulation, are shown to verify the proposed model.

Harmonic torque control has been used for constant mean torque production and cogging torque cancellation in AC permanent magnet motor drives. Presently, most methods require Fourier series analysis and either iterative or least squares minimization methods. In this paper, a novel approach based on instantaneous power theory is described which eliminates existing drawbacks.
