Pandemi Covid-19 menyebabkan gangguan psikosomatis berupa burning mouth syndrome (BMS), yaitu suatu kumpulan gejala rasa sakit dan panas pada satu atau beberapa struktur mulut dengan tampilan mukosa normal. Artikel ini membahas pengaruh gangguan psikosomatis terhadap nilai quality of life (QoL) pada pasien BMS di masa pandemi Covid-19 pada dua kasus. Kasus pertama, perempuan usia 74 tahun dalam masa menopaus, mengeluhkan rasa mulut kering, perih pada lidah, bibir atas, dan rasa pengecapan berubah sejak 3 tahun lalu. Terdapat riwayat hipertensi, mengonsumsi amlodipine sejak 5 tahun terakhir.

Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) are members of the human herpes viridae (HHV) family that can infect and give oral manifestations. This case report aims to discuss the oral manifestations of HSV-1 and CMV infection in a child with cerebral abscess. A 7-year-old boy was referred from the Department of Pediatrics to the Department of Oral Medi-cine with complaints of sore mouth sores, especially when eating, three days ago.Extraoral examination revealed that the lips were dry and peeling. Intraoral examination on the dorsum and lateral of the tongue, buccal mucosa and labialmucosa there is white plaque spread, can be scraped and leave an area of erythema. Many ulcers were found, shallow oval in shape, yellowish white in color, surrounded by a diffuse reddish border, varying in size 0.1-0.5 cm in the oropharynx, tonsils, and other oral mu-cosa. The blood laboratory examinations showed a decrease in the value of leukocytes, albumin, creatinine, and sodium, while the monocyte and SGOT values were high, with anti-HSV-1 IgG and reactive anti-CMV IgG. The established diagnosis was acute pseudomembranous oral candidiasis with intraoral HSV-1 and CMV infection. The treatment given is cleaning the entire surface of the oral cavity by gargling with 1% povidone iodine mouthwash 2 times a day, an hour break followed by administration of 1 mL oralsuspension of nystatin 4 times a day, and applying a thin layer of vaseline to the lips 2 times a day. The oral lesions healed on day-10. It was concluded that the oral manifestations can occur in patients with HSV-1 and CMV virus infections.

Apical periodontitis is primarily a consequences of root canal infection, be marked with inflammation and tissue destruction pe-riradiculars resulting from interactions between microbial factors and the host immune response. This study is aimed to evalu-ate the prevalence of chronic apical periodontitis (CAP) inpatients of Hasanuddin University Dental and Oral Education Hospital during the Covid-19 pandemic period in 2021. The study was conducted with cross-sectional design. Secondary data in the form of accumulation of the number of patients who came to undergo radiographic examination aged over 12 yearswere then grouped into CAP and non-CAP. Data were analyzed and chi square test was performed to assess the relationship between CAP with gender and age (p<0.05). A total of 222 data were obtained, of which 54% were women. The number of samples who expe-rienced CAP were 33.3% and thelargest age group was 21-30 years (29.7%). There was no significant difference between CAP and gender (p>0.05), but there was a significant difference between CAP and age (p<0.05). CAP depends on the dental condi-tion of patients who are not treated. It was concluded that prevalence of CAP who came for treatment and was detected using intraoral radiography at RSGMP Unhas were 33.3% and most of them were female and in the age group of 21-30 years.

Orthodontic treatment is a topic in dentistry that plays an important role in improving facial esthetics, function and stability of good treatment results.Interceptive treatment is orthodontic treatment that is performed in infancy or in the mixed dentition pe-riod to reduce the severity of the developing malocclusion in order to minimize the need for treatment. Interceptive treatment using functional appliance that produce orthopedic, dentoalveolar, andmusculoskeletal changes. Functional appliance, both fixed and removable types, can be used for skeletal correction in growing children. This literature reviewarticle is determined the need for malocclusion treatment and the pattern of needs in early childhood. The high need for interceptive orthodontic treatment may be caused by other factors, such as age, gender, level of parental knowledge, and socio-economic factors. It is concluded that class II malocclusion is the most dominant case in early children, which bad habit is one of the factors causing malocclusion. The need for malocclusion treatment at an early age is veryimportant so that the interceptive treatment pattern is needed by using functional appliance to prevent malocclusion become more severe.

Effect of artificial crowns on periodontal tissues (Literature Review)
Pub Date : 2022-12-19 DOI: 10.35856/mdj.v11i3.664
Aisyah Bella Azzanjani, Dian Setiawati
Dental crowns are artificial teeth that are permanently attached to teeth that have been prepared to repair part or all of the damaged tooth surface and to replace toothloss. Making a crown must consider several factors, including being able to maintain and pro-tect existing teeth and surrounding tissues. This literature review isaimed to describe the effect of crown use on periodontal tis-sue. A total of 20 articles collected from various electronic databases and manual searches wereincluded in this literature. Plaque is a major etiologic factor of gingival inflammation and inadequate crown design can lead to plaque accumulation. Dental crowns can cause inflammation of the periodontal tissues, if cervical endings and preparation margins as well as oral hygiene principles are not observed during the crown fabrication process. It is concluded that crown design plays a very important role in determi-ning the condition of periodontal tissues. Appropriate designand good oral hygiene are important to reduce the occurrence of periodontal disease.

The modern concept of pediatric dentistry today is based on minimally invasive dentistry. Light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation or Laser is one of the newest technologies available and is used for dental and oral care. This technology causes patient compliance with treatment to be maximized because the discomfort caused is very minimal. Lasers are an exci-ting technology and make pediatric dental care more optimal without causing many of the fear factors found in conventional dental care. This protocol has been developed long ago so that laser treatment can continue to evolve and is a safe and effective part of treatment. Although it has some disadvantages regarding cost and training, its use in pediatric dental procedures is well received by patients and their parents. Because of this, the use of lasers, especially in pediatric dentistry, is increasingly import-ant and needs to be developed. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) states that the use of laser as an alterna-tive method in the treatment of hard and soft tissues in the oral cavity for infants, children, adolescents, and patients with special health care needs, but dentists need additional training to apply it to pediatric dental care.

The success of denture treatment depends on the preservation of the remaining alveolar ridge. Preservation of the remaining na-tural teeth can assist in maintaining the integrity of alveolar ridge and proprioceptive ability of the periodontium. The main fo-cus in dentistry today is the maintenance of teeth and the periodontium. This case reports on the rehabilitation of a Cu-sil den-ture in the maxilla. A 70-year-old male patient wants to have denture because he wants to be able to eat and improve his appear-ance. The patient wants to preserve his remaining teeth as much as possible. It is concluded that Cu-sil denture can be an al-ternative treatment for patients who want to replace missing teeth while maintaining the remaining teeth.

The micro-organism that affects periodontitis is Fusobacterium nucleatum. To inhibit the growth of these micro-organisms, al-ternative herbal medicines are used, such as red betel leaf extract (Piper crocatum Ruiz & Pav) because it contains tannins, fla-vonoids, and saponins which have antibacterial and anti-inflammatoryproperties. This study was conducted to determine the an-tibacterial potential of RBL against the bacteria F.nucleatum ATCC 25586 using the agar diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer) with chlorhexidine as a positive control, aquadest as a negative control, RBL ethanol extract with concentrations of 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%. Replication 3 times, so the total samples are 21 plates. Data were analyzed by one-way Anova using SPSS v.21. The ethanol extract of RBL appeared to have weak inhibition at concentrations of 10% and 15% and strong inhibition at con-centrations of 20%, 25%, and 30% against F.nucleatum ATCC25586. It was concluded that there was a strong antibacterial po-tential of RBL extract against F.nucleatum ATCC 25586 at a concentration of 30%.
