The author reveals values that motivate Alyosha Popovich and Tugarin the Serpent, compares the structures of their value centers, and concludes that these characters demonstrate an opposed - i. e., pagan versus Christian - understanding of such categories as glory, honor, and strength. The article proposes a hypothesis that the function of the bylina (Russian heroic epic) about Alyosha Popovich and Tugarin is to correct the listener’s value centre in order to devaluate in it pagan axiological paradigm. According to the author, precisely such actuality of the genre purpose accounts for the fact that the Siberian variants of the bylina are more profound and vivid than the ones written down in the European part of Russia.

The article is devoted to the correlations with the works of “lyubomudrs” (“wise men”) in N. V. Gogol’s collection of “Arabesques” (1835). Most of these reminiscences are associated with two parts of the “Works of D. Venevitinov” - “Poems” (1829) and “Prose” (1831), which became the focus of the aesthetic and philosophical ideas of “lyubomudriye”” (“love to wisdom”). However, visible connections with him do not exclude the originality of Gogol’s decisions, which not only developed and transformed the romantic concept, but in some ways contradicted it.

The article deals with the issue of the role of the motive of just retribution in V. Astafiev’s works. The analysis of the writer’s main literary texts leads to the conclusion that the factor of dynamic balance between affective hatred of social evil and the thirst for mercy plays a key role in them. In the creative biography of Astafiev, there is an approximately ten-year “pessimistic” period (from the mid-1980s to the mid-1980s), when affective anger prevailed over kindness. However, in the future, the writer’s thirst for righteous retribution is again balanced by a exhortation to mercy.

The central concepts of Rilke’s things and figures are considered in connection with the ethical and aesthetic attitudes of Rilke, which were formed in the spiritual situation of Jugendstil, which expressed the aesthetic will to return the personality to the integrity of the life world as a unity of nature and culture and thus overcome the loneliness and fear of the personality of the modern era. The thing is experienced by Rilke as an intermediary between man and the world in its deep foundations. The poetics of Dinggedicht is shown as the poetics of revealing the phenomenon of a thing in the contexts of the existential experience of a large continuum of human culture.

The article deals with the role of the oppositions of «native» and «other» in the novel «Khurramabad» by A. Volos (2000). From «locus amoenus» Khurramabad turns into a dangerous place marked by violence and grief. All narratives of the novel are organized in chronological order: from the early 1930s to the 1990s, which was the time of mass departure of Russians and the civil war. Their sequence is due first to the Russian mastering of “another” («foreign») world, and then catastrophic loss of native city, property, and finally emigration to an unfriendly Russian countryside. The growing alienation of the characters ends with the author’s own alienation in the final essay «Khujand Dotted Line».

The article analyzes folklore-song interpretation of loneliness and accompanying feelings in the context of actualization of certain cultural imperatives and genre scenarios related to marriage and subsequent family life, which is considered mainly from the position of problematization of the young daughter-in-law inclusion in it. The main attention is paid to hymeneal songs, nonceremonial lyrics and ballads on matrimonial themes, which model the transformation process of the lyrical heroine (ceremonial character) with the help of such conceptual codes as action, locative, ornithological, as well as using symbols of isolation-fencing, metamorphosis and inclusion of neophyte into a new group. The considered folklore texts (in their semiotic meaning) act as a peculiar language, often the only one legitimized by tradition, through which in real communication situations its «bearers» articulate the state of solitude, isolation of a bridegirl and young married woman, as well as related social and psychological problems and such feelings or states as longing, despondency, destitution, desolation, fear, hopelessness, suffering.

The article is devoted to the responses of the English press to the publication of the first translation of A. S. Griboyedov’s comedy “Woe from Wit” into English, made by N. D. Benardaki in 1857 (London). Reviews that appeared in the Scottish magazine “McPhail’s Edinburgh Ecclesiastical Journal and Literary Review” and in the London newspaper “The Literary Gazette, and Journal of Archeology, Science, and Art”, and the names of their authors have remained unknown in Russia so far. In both issues, British readers are introduced to the content of the Russian play and with its characters, both publications tell about the life and work of its author. At the same time, each publication has features that reflect not only the personal preferences of its author, but also some general ideas about Russia in the middle of the XIX century that existed in Great Britain. The first article, relying on the text of the comedy, made an attempt to draw a general picture of the life structure and moral climate of modern Russia as a “not quite civilized” country, from the point of view of the British. The author of another one tendentiously covers the life of Griboyedov, revealing dislike for him as a diplomat whose activities in Persia were successfully directed against British influence in this country.
