In this paper, a traffic volume prediction model is formulated through Kalman filtering theory. The traffic volumes of the next time interval are forecasted with the detected data collected in Changchun, China, which shows that the prediction model has good performance in real-time prediction.

This paper presents vehicle alternator/generator trends toward the next millennium. A brief alternator/generator background is first presented and then four alternative alternator technologies are discussed. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new integrated starter/alternator/dampers system and to present study results of a comparison between typical stator core lamination material and powder magnetic material. Extensive laboratory testing has been conducted for different frequencies and applied field current levels. The induced flux density and field strength characteristics of the two magnetic materials are then compared at various field currents and rotor speeds.

The shortest path algorithm is critical for dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) and for the realization of route guidance in ITS. In order to implement the guidance function quickly and accurately, this paper introduces the fluid neural network (FNN) and develops a new parallel method based on FNN and genetic algorithm (GA) for route guidance. A sub-searching process and parameter optimization are employed to improve the performance of FNN. It is indicated by simulation that this method can be used to find the shortest route quickly from the original node to destination node in traffic networks.

Smoothing processing is one of the common methods in image enhancement that clears up the image noise, and its theories are all aimed at monochrome image. Using color space transformation of color image can not only gain more useful information, but also use the processing methods for a monochrome image. Using color space transformation based on L-H-S, the experiment for color image smoothing processing is made. The experimental results show that the method can availably cleans up the noise infection of color image and improve the imaging quality.

This paper introduces the unique structure of a semi-tracked air-cushion vehicle. A theoretical model for total required power of the vehicle is deduced. The optimum state of minimum power consumption is obtained under a certain soil condition. A control scheme using the self-tuning PID fuzzy logic controller is proposed. Simulation results show that the vehicle can drive steadily on the optimum state by the control system.

In this paper, a dynamic hybrid control method is proposed for constrained flexible manipulators. Based on the assumed mode method, the authors derive the dynamical equations of a constrained two-link flexible manipulator. They then divide it into a slow subsystem and a fast subsystem via a singular perturbation method. For the slow subsystem, the authors present a hybrid position/force control method based on force feedback. For the fast subsystem, they design a controller based on optimal theory. Simulation results prove the effectiveness of this method.

This paper describes a self-tuning control strategy and algorithms for vehicle suspension design. The controller design, using generalised minimum variance control theory, is adapted to the changes of road input and the variations of vehicle parameters, in order to provide optimal control in different conditions. The results of simulations showed the feasibility and effectiveness of the approaches.

This paper presents the electric motor applications in the modern vehicles. Automotive industry trends and three different motor technologies are also presented. In this paper an advanced integrated starter-alternator-damper (ISAD) system is discussed. The new starter-alternator combination provides a more efficient and higher output platform, which will provide the vehicle designer unique ways to reengineer many functions under the hood. Virtually any accessory, which is presently belt driven, may be converted to an electrically powered counterpart with the ready availability of more electrical power from the larger alternator component of the system. High voltage system issues are also discussed in this paper.
