The Mobile Agent Facility (MAF) is a standard for a CORBA facility published by the Object Management Group (OMG). This standard provides interoperability between agent platforms from several vendors. We describe an appropriate implementation architecture to develop an MAF compliant mobile agent system, and present a mobile agent system named SMART; which satisfies the OMG MAF specification, written in Java. The SMART system supports interoperability with other mobile agent systems implemented according to the MAF specification, and also provides a security mechanism based on the security model recommended by the MAF specification. In addition, the SMART system introduces a distinguished resource access policy based on the access level of an agent which is classified as several abstract entities such as admin, user, and gypsy.

We have derived an analytic expression for the average energy of field emitted electrons from n-type GaN. By making an analytic evaluation of the band-structure integral, the average energy is obtained in terms of hypergeometric and Lerch transcendental functions. The obtained expression exhibits the apparent dependence of the average energy on the applied field, carrier concentration, and temperature. It also yields numerical values of the average energy in excellent agreement with those obtained using full band-structure calculation.

The voltage step-up characteristics of the Rosen-type piezoelectric transformers using Pb(Mn/sub 1/3/Sb/sub 2/3/)O/sub 3/-PbZrO/sub 3/-PbTiO/sub 3/ ceramics were investigated as a function of the width (W) and length (L). Two types of PT were prepared in this study; one type with W>L and the other with WL.

Two types of PT were prepared in this study; one type with W>L and the other with W<L. With increasing the area of PT by increasing the L or the W in the range of 12/spl sim/42 mm, the voltage step-up ratio, V/sub out//V/sub in/, was also increased in both cases. The step-up ratio under a load resistance of 100 M/spl Omega/ was almost same in both types of PT with same area. However, the voltage step-up ratio under a load resistance of 150 k/spl Omega/, which corresponds to the turn-on condition of LCD backlight, the transformer showed better characteristics when W>L.","PeriodicalId":20531,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings KORUS 2000. Recently, FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) has come under pressure from switched Gigabit Ethernet in the enterprise backbone. In high-speed Gigabit Ethernet networks, traffic is expected to be highly bursty. In particular, whenever data flows from the high-speed link to the low-speed one, congestion commonly occurs. The Virtual-Connection Network (VCN) is a switch-based network capable of implementing cell-based connections, link-by-link flow-controlled connections, and single- or multi-destination virtual connections. Virtual connections described differ from the virtual channel in the ATM literature in that virtual connections have link-by-link flow control and can be multi-destination. VCN's support both connection-oriented and connectionless data link layer traffic. Therefore, the worst collision scenario in Ethernet CSMA/CD with virtual collision brings about end-to-end delay. The goal is to guarantee the performance with respect to bandwidth and latency for selected VCs with different propagation delay, To this end, we propose a classical proportional controller plus a Smith predictor to overcome instability accompanying increased round-trip delays as well as to avoid cell losses. The proposed control policy is illustrated by a simulation study.

A classification of the plastic deformation behavior at the mesoscale level, of coated and surface-hardened materials, is offered. The investigations were based on analysis of a large amount of experimental data obtained using the television-optical meter for surface characterization (TOMSC). The basic principles of classification suggested are the site of nucleation and the method of relaxation of mesostress concentrators, as well as the impact of the geometry and structure of the coating-substrate interface on the development of plastic flow in the composition.

The relation between the statistics of photons in input light on a detector and the measured photocounts is discussed for two types of light measurement, i.e., single photocount with one detector and coincidence detection with two detectors. The averages and variances of the measured photocounts are compared with the averages and variances of input photons on practical detectors having quantum efficiencies of /spl mu//sub 1/ and /spl mu//sub 2/. The calculations are carried out based on the combined operator model for a detector having less-than-unity quantum efficiency.

We have implemented a prototype educational system based on the distributed virtual environment. The developed system has a client-server architecture: the platform-independent server is implemented by Java virtual machine and the client is composed of VRML, EAI, and general web browser. If a change occurs in this virtual environment, all connected users can perceive the updated environment immediately. The system maintains its virtual environment after it is modified by users. Also, the system can accommodate many users by minimizing the information exchange. Since users can share multimedia information and virtual objects in spite of the limitation of time and space, the educational effects can be progressed through the use of the developed system.

The thermal diffusivity of several kinds of metal sheet was measured by the converging thermal wave method. This is a typical method which can obtain the in-plane thermal diffusivity by measurement of the temperature evolution at the center of a pulsed annular laser beam when the laser beam irradiated the surface of the samples. However, the rapid temperature increase, nonlinearity of the infrared detector, and convection heat loss from the sample surface in the latter part of the temperature evolution can sources of error. In this study, when the temperature of the center reached half of the maximum, the times t/sub 1/ and t/sub 2/ which were the ascending and descending parts of the temperature evolution curve, respectively, were determined and other points t/sub 1/' and t/sub 2/' were determined by increasing the temperature to 90% of the maximum with each 10% successively. By using the determined times, the variation of thermal diffusivity was investigated and compared with results from existing methods and reference values, and analyzed in terms of the reduction of errors.

In this paper, we discuss 3D micro-EDM with electrodes having simple shapes with a square cross-section. In order to maintain the original electrode shape, the machining conditions are set so that the bottom of the electrode is appropriately worn. The influence on the precision of the machined surface is analyzed by changing the machining parameters such as tool path and number of cutting steps. Furthermore, the formula for tool wear compensation in 3D micro-EDM is derived. As a result, square cavities with sharp corners can be machined. Inclined planes are machinable by applying the compensation equation.
