This article addresses the contents of the twelfth-century fascicle contained in MS Lyon, Palais des Arts, 45, which is largely devoted to texts on computus and the astrolabe. Included among the latter are 24 anonymous chapters on astrolabe use, which appear to stem from a previously unrecorded translation of Ibn al-Ṣaffār’s Kitāb fī-l-ʿamal bi-l-asṭurlāb (Book on the Uses of the Astrolabe). This would make the chapters in the Lyon manuscript the third such translation to come to light after the well-known twelfth-century translations by John of Seville and Plato of Tivoli. The article includes an edition of the text in question as well as two further appendices providing a breakdown of its content as well as a description of the Lyon fascicle.

L’article propose une étude du manuscrit Pisa, Bibliotheca Cathariniana, MS 2, un codex du milieu du XIIIe siècle contenant le De fide orthodoxa de Jean Damascène dans la traduction latine de Burgondio de Pise. L’étude analyse les caractéristiques du texte dans ce manuscrit, en notant la présence des traces de la méthode de traduction utilisée par Burgundio au milieu du XIIe siècle. Elle analyse également les gloses dans les marges, qui suggèrent l’utilisation du manuscrit à des fins pédagogiques dans un contexte profondément lié à la réception des influences théologiques parisiennes. Elle montre en particulier la présence de références croisées à des passages des Sentences de Pierre Lombard et à deux questions disputées de Guerric de Saint-Quentin. L’étude vise à présenter ce manuscrit comme un témoin de l'histoire ‘plurielle’ du discours doctrinal dans l'Europe des XIIe et XIIIe siècles.

The present work offers an account of the Latin reception of Proclus’ Commentary in the first book of Euclid’s Elements (In Euclidem). The overall goal of this paper is to offer a unified historical and philological map as a ground-tool for understanding the Latin reception of In Euclidem from the early 16th century to the 17th century, which includes manuscript sources hitherto overlooked. I will deal with the three known complete translations produced by Bartolomeo Zamberti (1473–1543), Giovanni Battista Gabia (c.1500–1590), and Francesco Barozzi (1537–1604), as well as with five fragmentary translations embedded in the works of Giorgio Valla (1447–1500), Jerónimo Muñoz (1520–1591), Conrad Dasypodius (1532–1600), Federico Borromeo (1564–1631), and Johannes Kepler (1571–1630). Each of these translations and the intentions of their authors are discussed in chronological order. Five of them (following the fragment chosen by Kepler) are partially edited in the Appendix.

In the Middle Ages, a severe ulcerative lesion of the lower limbs consuming a sick person’s flesh was named lupus because it was metaphorically associated with the wolf, probably with respect to the feared anthropophagic characteristic of this beast. Thirteenth-century theologians’ commentaries on the Bible linked lupus with morbus regius, a polysemic term that could denote jaundice, scrophula or leprosy. Moreover, for reasons of lexical proximity, lupus was at times confused with lupia, a subcutaneous swelling. The aim of this article is to present an inquiry of the earliest appearance of lupus as nosographic name and its exact meaning(s) and possible synonyms found in different sources, as well as a study on the competition among these different diseases names. The investigation will serve as a significant heuristic example for the purpose of demonstrating the overall complexity of the nosologic lexicon of the past.

Or. 15 de la Biblioteca Universitaria de Leiden, que contiene una versión del tratado de medicamentos simples titulado Kitāb al-Mustacīnī del judío andalusí Ibn Buklāriš. Los nombres de los medicamentos fueron glosados en español (a veces, en otras lenguas, como latín y, de manera ocasional, en francés) por Aḥmad b. Qāsim al-Ḥaǧarī (alias Diego Bejarano). This article explores the evidence for Transculturalism and Humanism, in the early modern sense of the concepts, amongst Jews of the Ottoman Empire. In the first part of the article, attention is paid to the growing numbers of humanist European travelers to the Ottoman Empire and their relations with Istanbul Jews. The second section of the article is concerned with Ragusa, part of the Ottoman orbit since the fifteenth century. Here, attention is paid to Didacus Pyrrhus, member of an Ottoman Jewish family and the only great Jewish Neo-Latin poet of his age. The third section focuses on Ottoman Cairo and the discoveries and identifications of fragments of works for the theatre in Spanish in Hebrew characters. They attest to an interest in humanist texts. Finally, by way of conclusion, the article examines a specific case of cultural transfer and common ground between Christian humanists and Jewish traders.

Jean-Robert Chouet è noto per aver introdotto la filosofia cartesiana dapprima all’accademia di Saumur e poi a quella di Ginevra. Questo articolo va invece ad indagare la sua attività scientifica attraverso l’analisi del manoscritto inedito intitolato Expériences sur la nature et les effets du venin des vipères (1671). Affidandosi alla sperimentazione per prendere posizione sulla vivace querelle che vide contrapposti Francesco Redi e Moyse Charas, Chouet mostra di riconoscere il ruolo importante svolto dall’esperienza accanto alla ragione nelle indagini di filosofia naturale. Sebbene risulterebbe scorretto paragonarlo ad un empirista radicale come Redi, Chouet può certamente essere avvicinato a Jacques Rohault per la sua tendenza a combinare ragionamento e osservazione.
