This research addresses the determinants of CEOs’ actions regarding the information security (ISS) of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This article aims to (a) identify factors influencing CEOs’ ISS actions, (b) examine the relevance of protection motivation theory (PMT) in explaining top management support (TMS, i.e., supportive actions), and (c) find potential differentiated effects on protective vs. supportive actions. The results of a questionnaire-based survey (N=200) show that the PMT and social influence constructs, while explaining a significant amount of variance, exert differentiated effects: in contrast with protective actions, which are influenced mainly by self-efficacy, SME CEOs’ supportive actions are strongly affected by the social influence of peers (partners and competitors) and customers. At a theoretical level, this research validates the relevance of the PMT framework for the study of TMS determinants in the context of ISS. This study is also the first to distinguish between these two types of actions and offers new insights on CEOs’ ISS-related behavior literature. For practitioners, the results imply that even when CEOs do not exert protective actions, it is important to build on their professional relations to trigger and enhance their supportive actions.

Absorptive capacity (ACAP) is considered as a dynamic capability based on organisational routines and practices. In information systems, and more generally in management science, most of the current methodological approaches cannot describe these routines and practices on a micro level. This paper presents the research methods that are usually used to study the concept of ACAP. By comparing these methods, we identify their limits and we provide the guidelines to apply a new collaborative research method called ISEACAP (Identification, Simulation, Evaluation, Assimilation of ACAP practices). This method follows a “practice-based” perspective and relies more specifically on the co-creation of new knowledge from both practitioners and researchers. ISEACAP is a gamified participative method to study ACAP’s practices in more depth. This paper presents ISEACAP as a new research method that entails a reflexive disposition from the practitioners about their practices and allows researchers to better understand ACAP mechanisms. Moreover, the method facilitates the study of mobilised organisational routines and practices (consciously or unconsciously) by actors to create and develop any kind of dynamic capabilities.

Simulation methods are more and more used in organization sciences. However, few researches in management of information systems integrate this methodological approach. In this paper, we first highlight simulation relevance to analyze complex and emergent phenomena. Then, the value of a research design combining two methodological approaches, case study and multi-agent simulation, is argued. Two simulation models are used to illustrate the contribution of combining both the methods, especially for improving validity of the simulation results. Qualitative foundations of the simulation improve the validity of the model built as well as they allow a better interpretation of simulation results. In return, simulation allows formulating new questions more theoretical and prospective, and also reinforces the theoretical generalization of results. Nevertheless this methodological combination leads to review the positioning of simulation in the research design. The simulation doesn’t hold a central place in the scientific knowledge building but more a complementary place, allow to surpass the case study and to renew the researcher questions.

Invented by the sociologist Charles Ragin in the 80 to identify the configurations explaining a phenomenon, the Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) method has been used in management sciences since mid of years 2000s. Research in management information systems seems to be an exception, with rare papers that appeared recently. However, this method offers several advantages to explore aspects, like equifinality, causal complexity, sensitivity to outliers and attention to the limited diversity of observed configurations. The aim of this paper is to present the features, benefits and limitations of this method for research in IS and an illustration of fuzzy-set QCA, one of the two main versions of QCA. This variant of the method is applied to the issue of the contribution of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) to respect the planned development time in the co-development of new products. QCA method identifies necessary and sufficient conditions for a result. In the illustration, we identified five possible configurations for a good respect of development time. In particular, we have highlighted a configuration where the use of the three PLM sub-systems is sufficient for a good respect of development time. QCA method is used to address the causal complexity notably through equifinality and the management of asymmetric configurations for a positive and negative result.

Over a few decades, some research in several academic fields (history, anthropology, sociology, education, management…) has questioned the social construction of gender roles. Despite their diversity, most of these works share a research approach that can be named ‘feminist approach’. The objective of this article is to use this approach to understand how gender is taken into account in information systems research, and more precisely in a leading journal, MIS Quarterly . First, we describe the different dimensions of a feminist approach. Then, all the articles mentioning “gender” have been examined using this framework, whether the term gender is used as a demographic variable or refers to male-female social relations. Results suggest that using a feminist approach could be of interest for improving IS research, providing additional rigor, and more robust findings, less flawed by cultural biases. Then, researchers can be questioned on their contribution in consolidating stereotypes and gender norms in IS. Last, a feminist approach in IS research could open the way to new ideas.

Mixed methods are increasingly popular in social sciences thanks to their ability to generate new research results that differ from traditional methodologies. As such, because they offer a wide range of methodological choices, these methods are fruitful for the Information Systems domain (Mingers, 2001; Venkatesh et al., 2013). However, we do not have any knowledge of how they are actually mobilized. The aim of this article is to better understand the use of mixed methods by IS researchers. More specifically, based on a comparative literature review, we identify trends in how these methods are used and in their epistemological anchor. To do so, a bibliographic analysis of seven IS journals has been conducted over the period 2008-2016. This analysis allows us to bring a critical lens on the use of mixed methods in IS and thus completes the two bibliographical studies developed by Mingers (2001) and Venkatesh et al. (2013). By anchoring its reflection in epistemology, this analysis differs from previous ones, making it original and powerful. It allows us to propose recommendations for authors wishing to implement this type of method.
