Interstitial hyperthermia using electrically heated catheters 使用电加热导管进行间质热疗

A description is given of a hyperthermia method that uses resistively heated interstitial catheters and conductive heat transfer for treatment of malignant brain tumors. As opposed to radiant heat sources such as ultrasound or microwave radiation, this system utilizes simple direct conversion of electrical energy to heat via resistive elements placed in implantable catheters. Heat transfer occurs via conduction and blood convection. Preliminary results indicate that tissue thermal profiles surrounding the catheters are predictable, given a fixed geometry, and feasible for hyperthermia treatment of tumors.<>

Magnetophoresis for mononuclear cell separation and diagnostic evaluation of the phagocytic capacity of monocyte 磁泳术用于单核细胞分离及单核细胞吞噬能力的诊断评价

The authors discuss magnetophoresis, which specifically separates monocytes phagocytizing iron dextran microspheres from mononuclear cell suspensions under a DC magnetic field. Diagnostic evaluation of the phagocytic capacity was carried out for patients with liver diseases on the basis of the separation efficiency of the monocytes. Results of the magnetic separation showed that the phagocytic capacities of hepatoma and liver cirrhosis patients were significantly lower than those of healthy volunteers. Magnetophoresis was found to be essential in investigating the phagocytosis.<>

On-line system for automated auditory evoked response threshold determination 听觉诱发反应阈值自动测定在线系统

An online computer system has been developed to determine auditory-evoked-response thresholds for objective hearing testing of otherwise untestable patients. The system uses click-evoked auditory brainstem responses. Online threshold determination is accomplished by two modules: a response recognition unit which determines if a response is present and a threshold tracking unit which utilizes a modified PEST (parameter estimation by sequential testing) algorithm to determine the click intensity testing level. Thresholds obtained manually and automatically are compared in 161 tests from 62 ears. Results indicate that automatically obtained thresholds show a strong agreement with those obtained visually as determined by a panel of experts.<>

EMG pattern classification of normal and anterior cruciate ligament injured subjects 正常与前交叉韧带损伤的肌电图分型

The authors have analyzed features of electromyographic (EMG) linear envelopes from six muscles of normal and anterior-cruciate-ligament-injured subjects and found that their phase spectra play major roles in determining the waveform. Pattern classification of six muscles was then done based on such features, and clusterings of some abnormal EMG waveforms were obtained. Several criteria for determining the optimal cluster number were also investigated.<>

A digital speech processor with lateral inhibition for artificial hearing 一种用于人工听力的横向抑制数字语音处理器

An 8-channel, real-time vibrotactile digital vocoder for artificial hearing is developed. The device is based on a TMS320C25 digital signal processor chip and uses the FFT spectral analysis technique. To improve tactile recognition, a lateral inhibition filter is implemented. Live and taped speech are used to evaluate the performance of the device. Preliminary results indicate that important speech features, such as formants and gaps, are transmitted efficiently by the system.<>

Laser Doppler microscope for high accuracy velocity measurement of microcirculation 高精度微循环速度测量用激光多普勒显微镜

The velocity of red blood cells in the microcirculation of rat mesenteries was measured by using a laser Doppler microscope (LDM). The LDM system must be improved to provide accurate measurement, because there are some inherent disturbances on measuring the flow velocity in a microscopic area. The authors investigate the spurious Doppler signals, which are the most serious problem in LDM measurement, and develop an optical arrangement for eliminating the effect of spurious components. In vitro and in vivo microscopic flow measurements showed that the impaired system provides high-accuracy velocity measurement for a microscopic area.<>

A three-dimensional cervical-spine range-of-motion system has been developed using an electromagnetic tracking system for data collection and a personal computer for analysis and graphic representation of the data. A test was designed to investigate the sensitivity of the electromagnetic device to the proximity of metal. It was found that relative position errors could be kept below 0.5 cm and rotation errors could be kept below 1 degrees if all metal was at least 33 cm from the source and sensor and the source was kept at least 33 cm from the floor.<>

Experimental expert system for audiometric testing 听觉测试实验专家系统

An experimental expert system for audiometric testing has been developed for desktop computers. This system is capable of administering air and bone conduction testing with noise masking, recognizing and classifying audiograms and tympanograms, and reaching a tentative interpretive diagnosis. The system is written in Prolog and runs on MS-DOS-based microcomputers. Preliminary results show that it is possible to implement a limited audiological expert system on microcomputers.<>

Early results from exploring alternative computer architectures based on hints from neurobiology suggest that networks of highly-interconnected, simple, low-precision processors can give tools for tackling problems that have been hard or impossible to do on standard computers. The authors describe an electronic neural model and show how this model is readily adapted for use in pattern-recognition tasks. They also describe a chip, implementing this model, that is used for handwritten digit recognition.<>

Two methods for estimating isometric recruitment curves of electrically stimulated muscles were tested on isolated muscles of anesthetized cats. The new, ramp deconvolution method results in estimates similar to the more traditional step response method but offers a higher resolution curve in less time. Changes in threshold and of the isometric recruitment curves with time are also demonstrated.<>
