A next generation optical access networks with a function of bilateral adaptable architecture is proposed and demonstrated. The hybrid-PON service is successfully demonstrated by both E-PON and WDM-PON with a simple uni-architecture of remote node. Furthermore, the hybrid-PON service can diagnose the health of the service with the monitoring technology in service state with the low-cost solutions.

In the present paper large mode area polygonal photonic crystal fibers with a single air-hole ring, which can be exploited for high-power fiber laser applications, have been studied. A new design that structures the air-holes in a single ring, according to a polygonal symmetry, around a solid core has been proposed. Octagonal and decagonal symmetries have been considered to design fibers less affected by the penalties arising in bending conditions, in particular the loss and the guided mode field distortion. The bending properties of different fibers with an effective area of 1400 mum2, confinement loss lower than 0.3 dB/m for the fundamental mode, and about 1 dB/m for the first higher order one at 1064 nm, have been analyzed and compared. Simulation results have shown that the mode distortion, evaluated through an overlap factor on a circular core region, as well as the loss value, can be reduced when considering photonic crystal fibers with a decagonal symmetry.

There is currently a great deal of interest in dielectric micro-cavities due to their numerous practical applications and their use to test fundamental physics issues. A systematic way of identifying dominating periodic orbits is presented including a comparison of cavities with singular or smooth edges.

All-optical circuits for packet compression and decompression are proposed for compressing and decompressing differential phase shift keyed (DPSK) packets, using optical delay lines and quantum-dot semiconductor optical amplifier (QDSOA) devices in Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structures. Packet compression and decompression are simulated between 40 Gb/s and 160 Gb/s and an eye opening penalty (EOP) below 0.4 dB is obtained for packets of size up to 1024 bits. For 64 bit packets, the same packet can be consecutively compressed and decompressed 4 times and an EOP of less than 1 dB is obtained.

We review major breakthroughs in realizing silicon-based active components by heterogeneous integration with III-V semiconductors, or nonlinear organic materials. In more detail we describe examples of our concepts and technological approach addressing this goal. This includes designs for widely tunable filters and new routes for heteroepitaxy and selective area growth of InP on silicon.

In this paper, we demonstrate symmetrical bidirectional transmission of 1.25 Gbit/s wavelength channels in an access network link employing centralized light generation, colourless optical network unit (ONU) and a reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM). The architecture of ONU is based on a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA). The ROADM is constructed with thermally tuned micro-ring resonators. We present the results of transmission experiments and switching time measurement, which prove the concept of a transparent link with flexible bandwidth on-demand provision using cost-efficient elements.

We propose a novel concept of image converter from an infrared range into a visible range of electromagnetic waves by the use of waveguide resonator structures of a micron size as a sensitive element. The method is based on the modulation of the resonator proper equidistant spectrum under the influence of the external electromagnetic radiation of the infrared spectral range, which changes the optical properties of the sensitive element material. The structure and principles of operation of the matrix converter of infrared images into visible ones on the base of a matrix of the waveguide microring resonators are investigated. It is shown that sensitivity of such converter to the variation of infrared radiation power can be as low as 2.6middot10-12 W.

An extension of the method of single expression (MSE) for analysis of plane electromagnetic wave oblique incidence on a wavelength-scale multilayer structure consisting of dielectric and magnetic layers is performed. Corresponding Helmholtzpsilas equations, boundary conditions and the expression for power flow density in complex media are derived in the terms of MSE for TE and TM electromagnetic waves. TE and TM waves incidence on multilayer structures comprising alternating quarter-wavelength dielectric or magnetic layers of high and low permittivity or permeability is analysed. The reflectance peculiarities on the angle of incident wave, distributions of electric and magnetic field amplitudes inside the considered structures are obtained. For a structure consisting of dielectric or magnetic layers the full transmission state is observed at Brewster angle for TM and TE waves, correspondingly.

PMD is regarded one of the main impairments in optical fibers due to the pulse broadening that it induces causing limitations in range and quality. It is well known that PMD may arise from a very bad section within a long fiber due to some external forces such as torsion, bending, etc. This work investigates the effect of the position of a bad fiber within a long link; the bad fiber is investigated in three places, at the beginning, the middle and the end of the fiber link.
