A fast component, on the order 387 ns (300 K), has been detected in the decay kinetucs of the yellow luminescence (563 nm) in LiF-UO2 crystals. It is shown that the emitting centers are anisotropic formations oriented in the crystal lattice along the second-order symmetry axes (C2) using the method of azimuthal dependence of the luminescence polarization. A model of the radiating centre is proposed and the position of the oxygen defect excited level is determined, from which the transition of an electron to the conduction band occurs. The luminescence (387 ns) from of the U5+ ion is observed as a result of electron transfer from oxygen ion to the excited U6+ level. The subsequent hole localization on U5+ in the ground state is accompanied by the reduction of the U6+ ion, that luminescence is observed in the green region of the spectrum (523 nm) with time decay 100 microsecond.

Optical properties of lanthanum-gallium silicate (La3Ga5SiO14), lanthanum-gallium tantalate (La3Ga5.5Ta0.5O14), calcium-tantalum-gallium silicate (Ca3TaGa3Si2O14) crystals in the near ultraviolet (UV) and visible wavelength ranges (200-800 nm) have been studied. For the first time the angles of deviation of the moments of the dipole transition spectral dependences theta(λ) were used to characterize the absorption processes in these crystals. These dependences make it possible to reveal absorption bands that are weakly noticeable on the transmission coefficients spectral dependences, and to estimate the degree of deviation of the dispersion dependence theta(λ) from the value theta=45o corresponding to an ideal ordered crystal. Analysis of theta(λ) dependencies showed that in the studied wavelength range, the lowest deviation from theta =45o is observed in Ca3TaGa3Si2O14, and the highest - in La3Ga5SiO14. The coefficients of the specific rotation angle of the polarization plane rho were obtained by the spectrophotometric interference method in polarized light. The measured values are best approximated by the Vyshin equation. For the first time, dependences of the modified Drude formula 1/rho=f(λ2) were calculated for these crystals. These dependences should be linear in case of an ideal crystal. The largest deviation from the linear dependence is observed for La3Ga5SiO14 crystals, and the lowest for Ca3TaGa3Si2O14. The discrete values of the refractive coefficients No and Ne were measured by the prism method. La3Ga5.5Ta0.5O14 crystals have the highest refractive coefficients, Ca3TaGa3Si2O14 crystals have the lowest. The obtained values are approximated by the Sellmeier equation.

Light scattering by spheroids plays an important role in various applications. The most efficient algorithm to calculate the optical properties of spheroids implies the field expansions in a special spheroidal basis, but its application is limited by three problems -- difficulties of computations of the spheroidal functions of complex arguments, the absent transition to the standard T-matrix, and loss of precision in complicated calculations for one case of the incident radiation polarization (TE mode). The first two difficulties have been recently overcome to a large extent, and in this work we solve the last problem -- by using T-matrix transformations, we find the way of expressing the TE mode solution through the more simple and stable TM mode solution. Numerical calculations performed by us demonstrate that the suggested approach improves the result accuracy by several orders, accelerates solution in several times and significantly extends its applicability range (up to the diffraction parameters exceeding 100).

A new peak with an increased intensity was observed in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), exposed to UV irradiation in the presence of sodium hypochlorite. It was concluded on the basis of the spectroscopic data that the new PL peak is associated with oxygen defects in the SWCNT structure. The impact of environmental acidity on the optical properties of oxygen-doped SWCNTs (O-SWNTs) was investigated. An increased sensitivity of the new PL peak to the pH of the medium was observed. It was concluded that the usage of a pH-neutral medium is of crucial importance for the creation of IR light sources based on O-SWNTs.

A new approach is proposed to the production of high-energy ions from a cluster jet irradiated with relativistic (5×10^18 W/cm2) femtosecond laser pulses, based on the formation of mixed clusters with an Xe core surrounded by a Kr shell. The appearance of distinguished charge states of accelerated ions was registered: instead of low-charge Kr2+, Kr3+, Kr4+, Kr5+ for pure Kr clusters, there are three components Kr8+, Kr14+, Kr20+ for mixed KrXe clusters. The energy range of detected ions expands significantly: from 1–6 MeV for Kr clusters to 2–16 MeV for KrXe clusters.

The paper presents a new original technique for accurate reconstructing the wave front phase at interferometry measurements based upon the estimation of the signals’ amplitudes. The optical signals’ processing is implemented within the Rice statistical model. The required phase of the wave front to be reconstructed is calculated from the geometrical considerations from the calculated undistorted amplitudes values. The paper provides both the mathematical basics of the technique and the results of its testing by means of both numerical and physical experiments. The proposed technique can be efficiently applied in a wide circle of scientific and technical tasks in numerous ranging and communication systems.

In this work, optical spectroscopy of thulium ions in a single-mode optical waveguide fabricated in a Tm3+:Y3Al5O12 crystal using the femtosecond laser printing method was carried out and an optical quantum memory protocol was demonstrated in a revival of silenced echo scheme. An analysis of the experimental data indicates the presence of instantaneous spectral diffusion at a thulium ion concentration of less than 0.01%, a weak effect of imperfections in the formed waveguide on the lifetime of the optical memory, and indicates the possibility of achieving a high efficiency of input signal recovery in the implemented waveguide scheme of the protocol.

The optical properties of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) of natural water have been studied by fluorescence spectroscopy and absorption spectroscopy. Samples of natural water from various depths from the meromictic lakes Trekhtzvetnoe and Elovoe were taken. The dependences of the quantum yield and the maximum of fluorescence emission on the excitation wavelength in a wide range of excitation wavelength variation (250...500 nm) for different horizons of stratified reservoirs are obtained. It is shown that the dependences of the maximum of the fluorescence emission on the excitation wavelength and the dependences of fluorescence quantum yield on the excitation wavelength in both lakes and at all depths studied are similar. On the other hand, the absolute value of the quantum yield differs in different layers of water. For example, the values of the fluorescence quantum yield took values from 1.4% to 2.4% at an excitation wavelength of 340 nm. The similar nature of the dependence of the fluorescence intensity on the excitation wavelength is explained by the common origin of DOM fluorophores in the studied horizons of stratified lakes. The different values of the fluorescence quantum yield are due to the difference in the proportion of aromatic compounds in the composition of the CDOM and are associated with differences in the hydrochemical characteristics of water at different horizons.

The action of hypochlorite on various biological molecules in a living cell has been actively studied for years. However, the influence of the structural organization of nucleic acids on their interaction with hypochlorite remains underinvestigated. In this work, using ultraviolet and infrared spectroscopy, we analyzed the effect of the structure of nucleic acids on the reaction with hypochlorite using the example of the three most common and biologically significant types of nucleic acids (NA): double-stranded DNA in the B-form, single-stranded RNA, and nucleotide phosphates. It was found that the rate of the initial stage of the reaction of hypochlorite with endocyclic nitrogen atoms depends on the presence/absence of base pairing in the NA structure. At the same time, the polymeric structure of NC significantly accelerates and increases the efficiency of the subsequent stages of the reaction associated with the chlorination of exocyclic nitrogen atoms and the destruction of the ring structure of nitrogenous bases.

The results of the development of a method for diagnosing 8-component aqueous solutions containing lithium, ammonium, iron (III), nickel, copper and zinc cations, as well as sulfate and nitrate anions, by IR absorption spectra and optical density spectra using artificial neural networks are presented. The application of artificial neural networks to the obtained arrays of spectroscopic data made it possible to ensure the simultaneous determination of the studied ions in a multicomponent mixture with an accuracy that satisfies the needs of environmental monitoring of natural and waste waters, as well as diagnostics of technological environments.
