The article shows the role of oxygen vacancies in the formation of luminescence bands of titanium and hafnium oxides, and also demonstrates the relationship between the intensity of luminescence bands and the conditions for the synthesis of films of these materials. It is concluded that photoluminescence is a very sensitive method for diagnosing the composition of oxides. Luminescence bands at 2.45 eV in titanium oxide and 2.91 eV in hafnium oxide make it possible to analyze the change in the film composition under various technological conditions of their production.

Chlorosomal bacteriochlorophylls are the main photosynthetic pigments of green sulfur bacteria – anoxygenic phototrophic microorganisms. The spectral properties of chlorophylls of higher plants, algae and cyanobacteria are well studied, however, the spectral-luminescent properties of their related compounds, bacteriochlorophylls, which participate in anoxigenic photosynthesis, are practically not described in the scientific literature. The polarity of the solvent and the environment have a significant effect on the emission spectra (bacterio)chlorophylls, which is expressed in the spectral shift of the absorption and fluorescence maxima, as well as changes in the fluorescence intensity. The spectral characteristics of bacteriochlorophylls d and e were obtained in organic solvents such as acetone, methanol, ethanol and isopropanol, as well as in acetone-ethanol (7:2) and acetone-methanol (7:2) mixtures. These solvents are most often used for the extraction of bacteriochlorophylls from bacterial cells, so the work will be useful for the development of methods for the quantitative determination of chlorosomal bacteriochlorophylls in bacterial cells or in samples of natural water.

The absorption and luminescence spectra of 4f-4f transitions of Yb3+ ions in crystals of CaF2, SrF2, and BaF2 fluorides have been studied. The crystal splitting of the 2F7/2, 2F5/2 levels in Tm2+, Yb3+ by the cubic field decreases linearly with increasing lattice constant. Both lines intersect at the energy of 2F7/2 - 2F5/2 transitions in unperturbed Tm2+, Yb3+ ions. The positions of the f13 levels of Tm2+ or Yb3+ in fluoride crystals are well described by ab-initio relativistic calculations

Based on the data on the spectral and photophysical parameters of the metal complexes of tetraazaporphyrins and phthalocyanines, the effect of the central metal ion on the manifestation of spin-orbit interaction is considered. For complexes of phthalocyanines with Mg(II), Zn(II), Pd(II), and Pt(II) ions, the absorption spectra, luminescence spectra, and luminescence excitation spectra were measured, and the lifetimes and quantum yields of luminescence were determined. It was shown that metal phthalocyanines with Mg(II) and Zn(II) ions, as well as Mg-tetaraazaporphyrin, exhibit intense fluorescence with high quantum yields. For single molecules of Mg-tetaraazaporphyrin in a polymer film at T=6 K, the fluorescence excitation spectra consisting both exclusively of zero-phonon lines and containing phonon wings were measured. A wide distribution of the measured zero-phonon line widths was observed. It is demonstrated, that the introduction of Pd(II) and Pt(II) ions into the center of phthalocyanine macrocycles leads to a decrease in fluorescence and the appearance of intense phosphorescence even at room temperature. Based on measurements of quantum yields of photosensitized generation of singlet molecular oxygen, the quantum yield of interconversion into triplet states for the compounds under study was defined. Deactivation of the lower triplet state of phthalocyanines with Pd(II) and Pt(II) ions indicates the influence of the internal heavy atom effect on the rate of triplet state deactivation at room temperature and at 77 K.

Designing of the ultrafast terahertz photonics devices requires materials with the biggest nonlinear refractive index coefficient n2 and the lowest settling time of the nonlinear response τ in the terahertz spectral range. In the present study, we show that the ratio n2/τ for media with the vibrational nonlinearity in the terahertz range is determined by the square of the medium thermal expansion coefficient and the fifth power of its dominative stretching vibrational mode frequency. These findings are based on the theory of the media vibrational nature nonlinear polarization response to incident THz radiation. We provide estimated values of the n2/τ ratio for a group of liquids and crystal materials. According to our evaluations, n2/τ value for alpha-pinene in the terahertz spectral range is about 10^6 cm^2/J and is almost the biggest one compared to materials with different nonlinearity types in various spectral ranges.

The paper reports on experimental studies of the absorption of 13C16O2 in a mixture with 12C16O2 in exhaled air by laser absorption spectroscopy using a diode laser tunable in the frequency range 4860-4880 cm-1. The results of the studies showed that the minimum detectable concentration of 13C16O2 is at a level of less than 20 ppm, and this approach is promising for measuring the content of 13C16O2 in exhaled air for non-invasive online diagnosis of oncological diseases of the gastrointestinal tract at early stages

The features of the fluorescence spectra of Rb D1 line vapors were studied for the first time using a cell with anti-relaxation PolyDiMethylSiloxane (PDMS) coating. At high intensities (> 200mW/cm2) of a cw narrow-band diode laser in the transmission spectra due to the effect of optical pumping, there are no absorption lines at atomic transitions, while in the fluorescence spectrum, all 8 atomic transitions of the D1 line are pronounced. A strong redistribution of fluorescence intensity is registered for atomic transitions of 85Rb and 87Rb: in particular, the ratio of fluorescence amplitudes for transitions of 87Rb, Fg = 1 - Fe = 1, 2 in a regular cell is 5, while for a PDMS cell it is equal to 1.5. A physical explanation of the observed features of fluorescence in a PDMS cell is given. A significant increase of fluorescence intensity and a change in redistribution at the transitions with increasing of the PDMS cell temperature is demonstrated. It is noted that at large intensities of laser radiation (when there are no peaks on the transmission/absorption spectra of atomic transitions), fluorescence spectra remain the only convenient and informative tool for studying the behavior of atoms.

Terawatt laser pulses obtained after temporal compression due to nonlinear spectrum broadening in thin glass plates with subsequent dispersion compensation by chirped mirrors are experimentally characterized by spatially encoded spectral phase interferometry. The proposed method allowed to reconstruct the spectral and temporal phase of obtained 16 fs laser pulses with up to 20 mJ of energy in a single-shot mode with spatial resolution.

This paper reports the spectroscopic properties of phosphates KLuP2O7, Sr9Sc(PO4)7, K3Lu(PO4)2, doped with Pr3+ ions. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra under selective excitation with UV photons, PL excitation spectra, and decay kinetics of pulsed cathodoluminescence are studied. Recordings of luminescence spectra were done with non-irradiated samples and after their irradiation with fast electrons (E = 10 MeV) or fast reactor neutrons. Three typical channels of electronic excitations radiative relaxation have been identified: interconfigurational d−f transitions, intraconfigurational f−f transitions in Pr3+ ions and luminescence associated with defects. After irradiation, significant changes in the luminescence characteristics were observed: a redistribution of the intensity of the intraconfigurational d−f transitions, an increase in the luminescence yield of defects and the manifestation of new emission centers. The formation of radiation-induced defects presumably occurs due to the formation of complexes consisting of phosphorus and oxygen atoms.
