This paper proposes a commodity freight generation demand model in such a way that the movement of commodities is explained by aggregate commodities production and attraction by zone. The proposed model is a modification of the first step of traditional four-step approach, which utilizes regression analysis. Regression analyses correlate freight production and freight attraction based on land use and natural resources productivity of the selected region. The analysis compares eight regression models within nine parameters. The research shows the using of multiple-linear regression and non-linear regression using inverse function to be more accurate and elastic than the other regression analysis.

Face increasingly complex challenges, most large companies use nowadays a hybrid structure that combines characteristics of various structural forms in order to have a greater flexibility required in rapidly changing environments. This study proposes a new firm's organizational structure, inspired from the nervous system functioning. Principally, four points are discussed in this paper: organizational adaptability to the rapidly changing environment, decision making, controls and information sharing. Findings are very interesting and seem in concordance with new challenges and trends.

Social and technological change introduce major challenges that logistics providers need to face in last-mile logistics. The integration of an end-to-end information flow by utilizing mobile communication systems of the customers within the logistics process, promises to entail a competitive advantage for businesses. The establishment of an interactive communication channel to senders and recipients by utilizing mobile applications is one solution for the realization of an enhanced information flow. Additionally, the integration of innovative delivery solutions at the point of delivery and customer information via systems, which the customers are already accustomed to, also inherits benefits for the logistics provider.

Collaboration has been recognized as a significant process that holds the value creation opportunity in supply chain management. Facing uncertain environments, firms have strived to achieve greater supply chain collaboration to leverage the resources and knowledge of their suppliers and customers. The objective of this study is to give a review of the literature that relates to various approaches to improve the performance in the collaborative supply chain. To achieve this objective, we propose the multi-agent models as relational approaches that improve the communication and interaction between agents and to get them to cooperate and coordinate with each others. Although, this paper does not stop at this level but it extends to raise other factors that lead to improve the performance of a company. Among these factors, new information technologies that play, as far as collaboration, an important role in the logistics network. The use of techniques based on information sharing which are supported by information technologies is fast becoming an indispensable tool for designing and managing complex supply chain systems today.

Disruption Management is an emerging field, where operational research techniques are used to deal with delays in many environments. Yu Gang defines the concept of Disruption Management as in the beginning of an economic cycle an optimal or quasi-optimal plan is obtained by the use of some optimization models. When an original planning is executed, disruptions, which are caused by several internal or external factors, may occur from time to time. As a result, the original planning cannot remain optimal or even Feasible. For this reason, we need to prepare a new revised plan reflecting the constraints and objectives of the evolved environment while minimizing the negative impact of disruption. In this work we present a rescheduling model based on Variable Neighborhood Search methaheuristic for the vehicles routing problem with time windows when one or more vehicles require preventive maintenance activities after the supply of a set of customers.

This paper deals with the cutting stock problem a well-known problem in operational research and in supply chain management, met frequently in paper and tissues industry. This problem is classified among the NP-hard problems for which, it is difficult to find the optimal solution; indeed the only known method able to solve this kind of problem would be the resolution through heuristic methods. The aim of this paper is the development and the computing implementation of a new heuristic for a specific cutting stock problem, which is evoked by an industrial print company. The objective is to determine the characteristics of reel to be orders while respecting a set of constraints fixed by the manufacturer. In order to validate the performance of the proposed heuristic several critical problems were tested. Huge profits are recognized compared with the current method used by the company. We believe that our solution can help company to make supplying decision automatically in appropriate ways.

Streetlights place a heavy demand on electricity usage, providing significant financial and environmental burdens. Consequently, initiatives to reduce energy consumption have been proposed, usually by turning off or dimming the streetlight. In this paper, we propose an adaptive lighting scheme based on traffic sensing, which adaptively adjusts streetlight brightness based on current traffic conditions. The algorithm has been validated through simulation using the SUMO and OMNeT++ tools and, for two different geographical locations, the energy consumption evaluated with respect to traffic speed and volume. The simulation results presented indicate that the proposed lighting scheme can consume up to 30% less energy when compared to the state-of-the-art.

An important supply chain research problem is the bullwhip effect (BE), which its presence makes supply chain planning difficult. In fact, demand fluctuations increase as one move up the supply chain from retailer to manufacturer. In this paper, a single-stage supply chain for a single-item inventory system is considered. The aim is about how identify the critical parameters that affect BE phenomenon when the retailer employ a (s, S) policy. To investigate and measure this impact, a simulation model is developed using Arena 10 software. A simulation-optimization based-approach is adopted, which combines metamodel through the factorial design experiments and the desirability function approach. Our findings suggest that when we want to reduce the BE, this doesn't mean directly reduce costs. The BE must be introduced in the supply chain management such a constraint not such an objective function (BE must be lower to 1 to have not a bullwhip effect), and the effect of S is always more significant than the effect of s, and it is valid for all studied situations. Otherwise, in a (s, S) policy, the choice of S is more determinant that s, to reduce costs in the supply chains as well BE.

In this paper we present a generic framework for ontology-based information retrieval. We focus on the recognition of semantic information extracted from data sources and the mapping of this knowledge into ontology. In order to achieve more scalability, we propose an approach for semantic indexing based on entity retrieval model. In addition, we have used ontology of public transportation domain in order to validate these proposals. Finally, we evaluated our system using ontology mapping and real world data sources. Experiments show that our framework can provide meaningful search results.

Knowledge Discovery from Databases (KDD) process is complex, iterative and interactive. It takes place several phases. For its implementation, several modules should be developed (module for data storage, module for processing data, data mining module, evaluation module, knowledge management module). The objective of this study is to propose an approach which assimilates every module to an agent. These agents have to communicate and cooperate to help the user to make the most appropriate decision. Thus, The process of KDD can be likened to a Multi-Agent System (MAS). To validate our approach, we have applied a process of KDD for the fight against nosocomial infections within an intensive care unit (ICU) of a University hospital. On a technical level, we have developed a software tool for decision-making support in Java/XML through the agent platform ”Madkit”.
