If an appliance perceives the location or health condition of a resident in the smart home, it can provide more intelligent service actively. That is, while the conventional appliance is operated by manual input of a resident, the location-based human adaptive appliance detects the resident's information such as location, activity pattern, or health condition by itself and provides the most suitable living condition for the resident autonomously. This paper presents the real-time location-based metabolic rate estimation method that measures the amount of physical activity (metabolic rate) for location-based human adaptive air-conditioner. And, the feasibility of the algorithm is evaluated experimentally on a test bed using the pyroelectric infrared sensor-based indoor location aware system (PILAS) that is a non-terminal-based location-aware system.

With the spread of information home appliances certified by Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA), it has become quite easy to share digital contents within a home network. In the meantime, the mobile Internet has been drawing much attention along with the popularization of high-performance mobile devices and the development of high-speed wireless communication technologies. Under such circumstances, there is a growing desire to obtain digital contents stored in a home network from a remote network in a simplified manner. In this paper, we propose a DLNA-based, remote communication method that enables the sharing of contents between a home network and a foreign network, by expanding functions of NTMobile (Network Traversal with Mobility), which is our original technology that can realize mobility and solve the NAT traversal simultaneously. By implementing our proposed method in a prototype system, we confirmed that a node can transmit media contents over a NAT and keep on browsing the contents even when the node moving to another network during communication.

In this paper we integrate a lower-power EC (Embedded Controller) and a BIOS (Basic Input Output System) to dynamically adjust both processor performance and power consumption of a notebook system. Our design prevents the notebook system from shutting down due to overheating. We utilize the EC to detect the total power of the system. When the total power exceeds the limit of the AC adapter for an excessive period of time, the EC notifies the BIOS which dynamically adjusts the clock frequency of the CPU to allow a total power reduction whilst maintaining sufficient power so that the system doesn't lag. Our design maintains a level of high performance during a reasonable interval, and without over-design of the AC adapter. In addition our design reduces both the cost and the size of the AC adapter for notebook users.

The design and configuration of hinge bracket is one of the most important parameters that determine the robustness of mobile notebook. At present, the optimization of that design parameter has not been approached theoretically. Some types of hinge brackets for some notebooks were compared with numerical analysis, and then it was confirmed with actual hardware testing. We show the root cause of current problem, and the effectiveness of hinge bracket design parameters optimization is reported.

Similar image search algorithm is important technique for efficiently search the images of our interests in the large pool of image data. In this paper, we propose an interactive metric learning search system using Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). We rank the search result based on the Mahalanobis distance calculated from SIFT feature vectors and use a LDA which enables users to update a search result until the returned results are relevant or satisfied by users. Moreover, we also examine the efficient learning rate and dimension size of feature vector for this model to enhance the search results. The efficiency of our model is confirmed through the intensive experiment using dataset from Caltech-256 which shows that the third updated result's accuracy can be increased by more than 57% from the default result's accuracy using our method.

H.264/AVC plays an important role in the video compression standard, it is better than previous video standards in the compression ration and the image quality. Motion estimation is one of the core designs of H.264 video coding, it basically includes the motion vector at quarter pixel resolution with variable block sizes and multiple reference frames, it mainly improves the image quality and provides more accurate predictions, however, because of these features, the computation load and complexity of motion estimation increase significantly. In this paper, a VLSI architecture for variable block size motion estimation with three step search algorithm is proposed. In order to improve the throughput, parallel architecture is adopted and the processing elements also allow the sums of absolute differences of larger blocks to be computed by using the results derived for 4×4 blocks. The proposed method can obtain the motion vectors of different block size. Compared to the previous architectures for variable block size, our architecture can reduce the computational complexity.

The discrete time Navier-Stokes equation (22) by the semi-implicit lime evolution scheme gives an approximate solution to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation (4). But the pressure P* and the posidon U* in die equation (22) do not satisfy die incompressibility (2), Thus die computed pressure P* oscillates numerically. The discrete lime Navier-Slokes equation (22) must be modified in order to converge to die Navier-Stokes equation (4).

Physical unclonable functions (PUFs) generate device-unique data streams by using manufacturing variations of each LSI. High-security authentication for counterfeiting prevention and secret key generation for data encryption are provided through PUFs. Such technology is a recent innovation, and Verayo Inc. created the world's first commercially available PUF only a few years ago. Toppan Printing Co., Ltd., has since integrated Verayo's PUF ICs into radio frequency identification (RFID) tags in order to develop a new security business in the near field communication market. In collaboration with Toppan, we have conducted acceleration tests on their PUF-embedded RFID tag to evaluate its performance and reliability.
