This study tries to analyze Joaquin Costa's work from an anthropological point of view. Costa was a reputed lawyer in the «regenerative» policy being conducted in his days and was also the compiler of a large first-hand collection on the uses and habits of contemporary Spain by means of which he secured, through personal contacts, questionnaires and public debates, a firm engagement on the part of his contemporaries in the fulfillment of that task. Costa was also the promoter of a theoretical interpretation based on «functionalistic» principies, and set up an institutional programme of ethnographical studies in Spain, to which important writers such as Unamuno, Altamira, Hoyos Sainz and Carreras Artau 1ent their collaboration.

This paper emphatizes the importance of the biographical perspective m the history of Spanish anthropology. After an introduction abour the use of biography in history, sociology and ethnology, the biographical point of view is analyzed in the history of sciences and the guidelines governing the writing of a scientist's life are given. The most frequent biographical genres in anthropological historiography are also stated, and finally the relevance of this kind of hisrorical ana1ysis is vindicated for the Spanish scholarship.

Last decade has witnessed a reviva! of fluvial fishing in certain towns of the lower course of the Guadalquivir river. That is the case of Trebujena, which has multiplied its number of riacheros (river fishermen), through the practice of eel fishing, an up to then unknown practice in the area. This has brought about not only quantitative but mainly qualitative changes: new fishing crafts were learnt, new trading systems introduced, family life was reorganized, feeding habits and the distribution, policies of the scarce goods available were also revised. In fact, everything has changed for the people who are searching in the Guadalquivir basin a necessary complement to their modest household income.

The fable of a ridiculous horse -lame, armless, stumbling and fraudulently sold to a person whose social caste is satirically described- makes the subject of sorne Coplas that were composed by Juan de Mena in the XVth century, and of an hexasyllabic «romancillo» that was documented in oral tradition from XVIIth century onwards until our time. Their formulistic, subject and social purpose coincidences suggest, although without any definite proof, their poetic interrelationship. An apocryphal XVIIth century collection of letters that unintentionally mixes up both types of texts -the literary and the oral one- also reinforces their possible poetic links.

In this paper I study the Valencian Corpus Christi play «El misteri del Rey Herodes» in its social and textual setting. I analyze the notion of representation and allegory, and how these concepts lead to a textual unfolding ad infinitum , thus erasing all boundaries between actor and spectator. I attempt to disprove the common misconception that the misteris are a minor literary genre, and in fact serve as a sort of social framework for the urban center, as does law. I test the validity of Walter Benjamin's theories of divine and mythical violence through King Herod's confrontation with Christ. And I examine as well the process of creating the festa : active participation. This is the key to the festa , since the play is only part of the spectacle.
