Tower Health System (THS) of Reading, PA, USA recognized that physician leadership was needed for any transformation toward value-based care design and delivery. THS worked with The Leadership Development Group (TLD Group) to design the Applied Physician Leadership Academy™ (APLA™), which included interactive learning modules, assessment, coaching, and action learning. A needs assessment and interviews with key stakeholders informed content for the learning modules and the action learning projects. A pre- and post-program self-assessment and an emotional intelligence assessment were used for coaching sessions and personal development. Through APLA™, THS developed its existing physician leaders to manage change alongside health system executives. This reflective case history illustrates the incorporation of an evidence-based management approach in support of evidence-based organizational development practice.

Managing Change Within the UK Chemical Manufacturing Sector
Pub Date : 1900-01-01 DOI: 10.4018/978-1-5225-6155-2.CH022
R. Holden, B. Morton
Set within a UK chemical manufacturing plant, this reflective case history account upon culture change, identified as fundamental if a range of structural, technical, and process changes were to be achieved successfully. Conversations about change were extensive, increasingly inclusive, providing a basis for critical connections to be made regarding workforce involvement, values, learning, and knowledge flow. This case history reveals how the organization's leadership enabled the emergence of a more collaborative approach to the management of change.

Returning to the In-Person Workplace in a (Post?) Pandemic Context

The SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic has been with humanity since late 2019 (based on new information) and has cost close to four million lives globally (and counting) and resulted in chronic health conditions for many tens of millions of others with “long COVID.” As humanity acquires some level of biosafety with several highly effective vaccines, many are returning to work in physical buildings and in the proxemic company of others (in shared interpersonal airspace). This return to normalcy aims to ramp up social creativity and work productivity. Some are returning to changed physical spaces with “social distancing” which is empirically, perhaps, not so effective. This work explores what it is like to return to the in-person workplace based on contemporary research, journalistic coverage, social media narratives, and a light auto-ethnography, with global research included but a particular focus on the U.S.

Indonesia's Inclusive Economic Development Strategy
Pub Date : 1900-01-01 DOI: 10.4018/978-1-7998-8524-5.ch005

Two developments are currently taking place in Indonesia, namely the process towards an inclusive economy and economic digitalisation. The main objective of this chapter is to review the extent to which Indonesia has achieved these two processes. To this end, this descriptive study analyzes secondary data from multiple sources, and the results show that Indonesia has made some progress in achieving both developments. But the results also give an important impression that in the short term, digitalisation of the economy can increase inequality because access to ICT or the internet is not evenly distributed. Therefore, this chapter emphasizes that extra efforts from the government are urgently needed so that the poor can get full access to ICT, including micro and small businesses, of which only a small number of them are implementing e-commerce, and the majority of them are located on the island of Java including Jakarta, which is the most developed region in Indonesia.

Macro-Change in a Micro-Firm

This reflective case history is about a Dutch micro-firm in the technical sector that was grappling with social issues on the work floor. Quarrels between the brothers of this family-owned and operated firm were negatively influencing business processes, teamwork, employee relations, and other social factors, resulting in complaints from customers. The goal of this change program was to help management improve workflow coordination and teamwork, in turn increasing product quality and customer satisfaction.

A Framework and Architecture for Performance Management in Virtual Organizations

Virtual organizations are becoming common in the new world of work characterized by modern data exchange capabilities. These organizations face new challenges in information sharing that traditional approaches cannot address. This research proposes a framework and architecture for providing performance data to partners in virtual organizations. The framework aligns the activities of partners in a virtual organization at three different layers and defines common performance measurement indicators at each layer. It also proposes an implementation architecture that enables inter-organizational performance management in collaborative environments. The proposed architecture is validated through a prototype developed using IBM business process and business intelligence products.
