This study discusses the manner in which villagers of "Kampung Kristen" Leran Village, Bojonegoro decide how to interact within religious heterogeneous society in order to construct social harmony. Using ethnographic of communication approach, the findings have revealed that within social communication of Leran villagers, they always face dynamic interplay between integration and separation, stability and change, expression and nonexpression. Hence, they decide to have a cautious attitude towards verbalizing ideas and emotions in words, particularly related to religious issues. In general, they prefer and are more concerned with preserving social harmony than arguing their religious beliefs.

This article discusses the pattern of impression management carried out by the da'i on the front stage in an effort to improve the quality of message transformation to mad’u. Through a good impression management, the persuasion process occurs which allows the conveyed messages to be well received by mad'u with fullly awareness, not by force. Using dramaturgy approach, researchers conducted participatory observation and in-depth interviews towards 15 da'is in Ambon City who were chosen purposively. This study has revealed that during proselytizing, the da'is manage the impression on the front stage by utilizing verbal and nonverbal communication through the management of situational, planned, and spontaneous impressions.

This article discusses Indonesian cyber society activeties and its configuration on social media which considered being able to encourage social movements, for instance Defending Islam Action, subsequently well known as ‘Defending Islam Action 212’. This article argues that netizens' activities on social media turned out to involve various class variants and social status and are able to encourage the ' Defending Islam Action’. Moreover, the social formation and activities of netizens on the social media constitute the prospects for the social construction of the cosmopolitan Muslim community in Indonesia. The portrait of Indonesian cosmopolitan Muslim is seen as a congregation of citizens compelled by their religious awareness, regardless of social, political, economic boundaries and even inter-religiosity which reveres universal principles of humanity.

This study discusses the response of da'i in the city of Mataram related to the discourse on certification of Friday prayer preachers which was commissioned by the government in 2017. This study used qualitative methods. In-depth interview towards da'i and Jumat prayer preachers was utilized to collect the data to answer the focus of the research. The findings of this study revealed that currently the khatib certification is not necessary. This is because there is no strong evidence that has shown the radicalization occurs in Mataram resulted from Friday sermon. However, the respondents emphasized the importance of standardization of all aspects of religion, especially on aspects of the mosque management and religious institutional management under the guidance of the Indonesian Ministry of Religion and Islamic community organizations.

This article discusses the urgency of media literacy in addressing the framing of cynicism and conflict issues between tribes, religions, races and groups carried out by the mass media in Indonesia. Specifically, this study attempts to contribute the role of media literacy in minimizing cynicism between tribes, religions, races and groups. Through text studies, this article argues that literacy is considered as science. The more educated people, the more acquired knowledge will be. It means that when people receive more information from the mass media, they will certainly be wiser. Further, to raise public awareness, a systematic way through education, both formal and non-formal, is needed. Hence, harmonious human relations could be realized, regardless of ethnic status, race, and religious belief.

This paper provides an in-depth analysis of proselytizing problems and strategies among the Muslim minority in Poka Village, Ambon City. Using qualitative des–criptive method, this research concludes that many da'is in Poka village have faced two main problems both internal and external issues. The former related to the number of da'i, the role of da'wah institutions which is not optimal, and the lack of community solidarity in propagating Islam. In addtion, many da’is do not possess a high Islamic intellectual quality and a good quality of education. The latter problems related to the lack of government attention on Islam as well as the dominant influence of non-Muslim environments. While da’wah strategies conducted by da'is are da’wah bi al-lisan and da'wah bi al-hal.

This article aims to find out how communication (proselytizing) message appeals in the literacy proselytizing of Ustadz Giovani Van Rega. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study has revealed that the message appeals used by Ustadz Rega are rational message appeals, appeals of fear, appeal for rewards, and motivational appeals. Ustadz Rega is considered using a rational appeal because he refers to the Qur'an and hadith. While the appeal of fear clearly understood from his statement that Indonesian Muslim youths Islam will suffer from weak faith, physical, science, and weak creativity if they are illiterate. The proposition of the appeal of reward is the more a Muslim well literate, the more honorable he is. Whilts the motivational appeal refers to his that the dakwah of literacy is a necessity in order to be able to conquer the world.

This article is based on a sequential exploratory mixed method research which carried in-depth interviews, content analysis, semi-structured participant observation, and administered a survey to 422 smallholder farmers in Machakos County in Kenya. The study was premised on combined concepts of information needs assessment (INAM), Sustainable Livelihood Framework (SLF), and ICT4D value chain analysis models to explore the effect of mobile phones on smallholder farmers’ livelihoods. The study found out that mobile phones are not used by smallholder farmers’ in the same way and therefore its effect on their livelihood is not uniform. On the one hand, mobile phone has negligible effect on subsistence smallholder farmers on-farm activities, and on the other hand, mobile phone usage has huge impact on market-oriented smallholder farming because it improves the relationships and interactions between the farmer and other rural livelihoods stakeholders.
