The emergency of sexual violence against children in Indonesia is considered to involve religious intervention for resolution. This article discusses the role of Islamic teachings in creating individual, social, cultural, and contextual forces as factors affecting synergetic communication for children, which further contributes to minimizing sexual abuse against children. This article argues that Islamic teachings such as introducing the masculine and feminine souls towards children in the early age, introducing the concept of aurat and sexual education to children as well as providing qishas or diyat punishment for child sexual offenders, will be able to contribute to creating societal and individual forces for their social communication skills that can protect them form predators of sexual abuse.

The institutional transformation of the State Islamic Institute (IAIN) into the State Islamic University of Sunan Ampel (UINSA) Surabaya has generated on social mobility, horizontal mobility in particular, and has changed the communication patterns of the campus community and villagers. This study discusses the sociology of communications of campus community and citizens of Jemur Wonosari post-transformation of UINSA. It has revealed that the villagers tend to perceive the students as the economic symbol rather than as the agent of change. Students have not contributed to socio-cultural and religious development. Therefore, they need to develop self-concept and perception as change agent and contribute to socio-religious change, especially by using convergence model of communication.

This article discusses the role of local culture as a channel of religious communication in conveying religious teachings in Mamala, Leihitu, Central Maluku, Maluku Province. Through descriptive qualitative methods, this study concludes that local tradition has remained an effective medium of religious communication for internalizing cultural values and Islamic teachings amongst Mamala villagers. The religious symbols embedded within the local culture, such as taking bath before Ramadan, the Shafar shower, the maulid ceremony of the Prophet Muhammad, the marriage and pregnancy ceremonies, tradition of pukul sapu lidi, the alifuru attraction, and the traditional dance Manuhua, have become religious communication channel, for religious leaders in particular, to meaning-making as well as to convey the 'new interpretation' of the symbols that is not in line with Islamic teachings.

This study aims to find out the discourse construction of an interfaith gender lecture published in Serambi Indonesia. Using Van Dijk's discourse analysis model on three news reports during 7-24 January 2015 and on inter-views with three journalists and an editor as well as three readers of Serambi Indonesia, the study concludes that there is a unified discourse found in the elements of text, social cognition and social context which has produced negative impressions towards Rosnida Sari and recovered the image of UIN Ar-Raniry. In short, the news contruction of Rosnida Sari tends to represent her image as a less responsible person and should be academically punished and it reinforces prior discourse depicting her as the cult practitioner.

This article reports on study of NU’s elite intellectual rhetoric on Islam Nusantara published by NU’s official web portal. Using Stephen Toulmin's rhetorical analysis and the Teun A. van Dijk's text analysis, the findings illustrate that the rhetoric of NU's elite intellectuals on Islam Nusantara, conveyed through their articles, frequently presents the background attributed to the NU's 33rd summit and provides argumentation based on a local situation that are directed to make the conclusion that Islam Nusantara is a distinctive Islam of NU. It is not aimed to localize Islam, but it attempts to understand and perform Islamic teachings, without putting aside the place where Muslims are held and embraced.

This study discusses the convergence of media conducted by Pesantren Madinul Ulum (Madu) community radio in Campurdarat Tulungagung East Java for promoting Islam. It is interestingly enough to be studied because there are limited availability of channels and the function of community radio constrained by government laws and regulations. Using qualitative approach during January-August 2016, the study has found that this community radio has taken advantage of regulatory gaps to develop a converged media strategy for da'wah. This is conducted by utilizing streaming media, building community radio networks, synergizing with private broadcast radio, setting up private TVs, combining radio broadcasts with online media, and combining on-air with off-air activities.

The development of communication and information technology is not only changing the economic, social, political, and cultural practices, but it is also changing the religious practices, including for da’wah activities called as E-da’wah (Electronic da’wah). This study attempts to investigate the construction of da’wah message used by Ustadz Felix Y. Siaw dan Ustadz Yusuf Mansur in his facebook fanpage. Using Pan and Kosicki’s framing analysis and in doing so utilizing in-depth-interview in collecting the data, this research has revealed that the most da’wah messages shared on both ustadz’s facebook fanpages are carefully constructed to encourage religious discussion amongst followers, and to increase their critical thinking and their piety.

The rapid development of social media in the contemporary era, has given birth to the phenomenon of hoax, which is very disturbing for society. This is because the consequences of hoax messages are slanderous and attempts to disunite social groups. In response to this, the role of Islamic preacher (da’i) in conveying the message of the Qur'an regarding the importance of providing accurate information is necessary. The da'is are obliged to convey the truth according to al-Qur'an to ummah and to provide them a clear understanding in addressing the hoaxes news. Thus, the hoaxes news that often encourage social, political, and religious conflicts in the society can be resolved quickly and appropriately.

this article aims to contribute to the current understanding of how the religious-based TV drama Upside-Down World (Dunia Terbalik) depicts the identity of rural-based Muslim society in the contemporary Indonesia. Utilizing a formal method of film criticism, it reveals that the soap opera Dunia Terbalik simulates 'a hybrid new Santri identity' as well as it blurs the existing identities like Geertz' classification of santri. Further, the reculturization occurs within TV drama narrative, through which hybrid new Santri identity constructed, is likely intended to convey the notion that Indonesian Islam (Santri) should be globalized, and the global should be Santrinisized".
