Abstract The Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance (CHTA) held its recent Annual Meeting in Winnipeg, Manitoba. A roster of expert speakers presented on a range of topicsincluding hemp seed food, production, seed breeding, marketing, and research, as well as fibre processing, economic development and new opportunities. The event was a solid opportunity to learn more about hemp in Canada, and for the industry to plan for the future and to network within the sector.

Preliminary Results of Selection for Seed Oil Content in Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) 大麻(Cannabis sativa L.)种子油含量筛选的初步结果

Abstract The ‘Kompolti’ variety and the ‘Fibrimon 21-63’ hybrid parent were selected for high oil content and the resulting lines were named ‘Kolaj’ and ‘Fibrolaj’, respectively. Individual selection was carried out on the basis of pressed oil content. The selection gains calculated from the pressing data were checked using the extraction method. For this purpose an experiment was set up in a random block design with four replications, taking selection as the treatment. In the case of ‘Kolaj’ five years of selection resulted in a 2.96% increase on the basis of the pressed oil content and in a selection gain of 2.83% according to the data of extraction with hexane. The pressing method could not be applied in ‘Fibrolaj’ in two years due to the small seed yield, so no selection could be carried out in these years. This meant that selection was only carried out three times between 1997 and 2002. Analysis of variance indicated a higher selection gain for the extracted oil content (1.38%) than for the pressed oil content (0.87%) in ‘Fibrolaj’. At present the pressed oil content of ‘Kolaj’ is 29.8% and the extracted oil content 35.4%, while for ‘Fibrolaj’ these figures are 29.7% and 35.9%, respectively.

Fibre Development in Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) as Affected by Agrotechnique 农业技术对大麻纤维发育的影响

Abstract This paper reports the preliminary results of a microscopic study carried out on stem cross sections of hemp. Stems were harvested from two field experiments carried out in 2001 and 2002 in the north of Italy to compare the monoecious genotype Futura 75 over four plant populations. Fibre characteristics such as cell shape, diameter, maturation and quantity of secondary fibre tended to vary with harvest time, plant density, and between and within internodes. After the end of internode elongation, fibre cells changed from oblong to round shaped and fibre maturation started and progressed to a maximum level. At various moments of the growing cycle, fibre maturity and presence of secondary fibre seemed higher at lower internodes and plant densities.

Abstract The Hmong ethnic minority of China and Southeast Asia use hemp for myriad purposes. The most well known use of hemp textiles is for the production of pleated skirts. These traditional skirts are decorated by several methods to create countless variation. Hmong hemp skirts are excellent examples of traditional craft and make attractive collector's items.

A Combined Analysis of Agronomic Traits and Allozyme Allele Frequencies for 69 Cannabis Accessions 69份大麻材料农艺性状与等位基因频率的联合分析

Abstract This study reports on a combined analysis of phenotypic traits and allozyme allele frequencies for 69 accessions from the CPRO Cannabis germplasm collection. Sample populations of each accession were evaluated for achene traits, cannabinoid content, days to maturity, plant height, leaflet shape, fiber traits, and root-knot nematode resistance. Sample populations were also assayed for 11 enzymes using starch gel electrophoresis and the frequencies of 49 alleles encoded at 17 gene loci were determined. The phenotypic and genetic data sets were combined and analyzed by principal components (PC) analysis. A scatter plot on the first two PC axes shows that southern and eastern Asian hemp (fiber/seed) accessions group apart from hemp accessions from Europe, Asia Minor, and central Asia. On average, the former group matured later and had significantly higher levels of THC and lower levels of CBD, wider leaflets relative to their length, longer xylem fibers, and lower bast fiber content.

Abstract John Dvorak provides an assessment of the 2004 Hemp Industries Association convention. In general, the mood at the 2004 convention was upbeat and positive. Increasing press coverage of hemp related issues is raising the awareness of the general public. This is resulting in higher demand for hemp products across the board. Researchers are trying to document the benefits of hemp foods to add credibility to longstanding claims. Efforts are also being made to collect sales data of hemp products sold in America, so that the industry can better gauge the level of growth. Other areas covered include profiles of some of the companies that are proving that perseverance is finally paying off when it comes to running a successful business.

Abstract After a short history of hemp in Italy, this article lists the events that have brought back the cultivation of this fibre crop in Italy in recent years. The cultivation technique used for baby hemp is briefly described and the preliminary results of its processing are given. Baby hemp is a hemp crop grown at high plant densities (400–500 plants m−2) that is chemically desiccated when the height of 120–140 cm is reached and that is harvested with the machines used for flax. Advantages, problems and possible solutions for this technique are presented.

The Cannabinoid System-A Brief Review 大麻素系统综述

Abstract A9-THC, the main psychoactive cannabinoid from the Cannabis plant, binds to specific binding sites in humans, which are situated in membranes of nerve and several other cells in both the central nervous system and peripheral organs. Evidence for the existence of the specific action of cannabinoids was presented in the late 1980s. Depending on the kind of cells, on dose, and on the state of the body, activation of cannabinoid receptors (CB) may cause a multitude of effects including euphoria, anxiety, dry mouth, muscle relaxation, hunger and pain reduction. In 1992 the first endogenous substance that binds to CB receptors, which causes similar effects as THC was detected. Five of these endo-cannabinoids and two subtypes of cannabinoid receptors are known so far, constituting the endogenous cannabinoid system in humans and other animals. Evidence for the existence of the specific action of cannabinoids was presented in the late 1980s. Depending on the kind of cells, on dose, and on the state of the body, activation of cannabinoid receptors (CB) may cause a multitude of effects including euphoria, anxiety, dry mouth, muscle relaxation, hunger and pain reduction. In 1992 the first endogenous substance that binds to CB receptors, which causes similar effects as THC was detected. Five of these endo-cannabinoids and two subtypes of cannabinoid receptors are known so far, constituting the endogenous cannabinoid system in humans and other animals.
