This essay examines early 20th century travel texts written by two European women: the Catalan journalist Aurora Bertrana (1899-1974) who lived in French Polynesia from 1926 until 1929, and her contemporary, the Dutch journalist Mary Pos (1904-1987), who travelled to the Dutch East Indies in the fall of 1938 and returned early in 1939. Our research is double-focused: on the one hand it examines issues of empire, colonisation, and orientalism, and on the other hand it explores issues of modernity and feminism. The travel texts under study offer personal registrations of self-fashioning strategies that both authors employ, which significantly question gender expectations regarding women’s social and sexual practices, their professional, familial and marital roles, and their opportunities for education. Presenting them as emancipated modern women, however, the accounts are also embedded in an orientalist and colonial discourse and seem to impose their own views of modernity and feminism on other women–despite ardent appeals to intercultural understanding.

EnglishThis article focuses on organisations’ flexible working policies and the UK’s Right to Request Flexible Working legislation first introduced in 2002 and progressively extended in 2009 and 2014. It critically explores the existing literature around flexible working to examine the UK’s policy approach through a gendered lens and by adopting Bacchi’s framework «What’s the problem represented to be». Three themes from the literature are identified and explored to problematise the deep-seated assumptions and silences underpinning policy: namely, the dominance of the business case rationale; the gendered substructure of organisations; and the disjuncture between policy «on paper» and policy «in practice». Through the lens of Bacchi, the article highlights that the «problems» underpinning the UK’s Right to Request legislation and organisation’s flexible working policies are neither fixed nor static, discursively shifting across «time», and that flexible working policies must be analytically situated within their social and economic contexts.

All too often the question «what’s gender got to do with it?» still arises with government officials, policy actors, elected politicians and of course in everyday conversations. As long as these formal actors –policy makers and politicians– continue to contain thinking and consideration of gender equality in the policy making process to more superficial notions of equality of opportunity and equal treatment, the dimensions of gendered relations and the complex interactions across policy domains will remain invisible and policy making, and the silences of assumed norms that shape policy «representations» will remain.

Since its inception, the European Union (EU) has been at the forefront of the promotion of gender equality. A key feature of the EUs approach to gender equality was the development and promotion of Gender Mainstreaming (GM) as an innovative approach to achieving gender equality. GM has been used as an approach to integrate gender into programme formulation, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation across the EU policy programmes, including the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF), which plays a key role for both the inclusion and promotion of the contributions of women in economic development. GM is a well-researched gender equality strategy, however there is little consensus on its effectiveness and its ability to transform the policy paradigm and attempts to operationalise GM have been limited. Despite a large body of academic literature, there is limited recent research which links GM and the ESIF, specifically at a local level. Therefore, this article aims to do that by considering whether GM as part of regional development policy can be utilised as a tool for delivering transformative changes. Scotland’s approach to GM within the ESIF is analysed utilising process tracing and semi-structured interviews with ESIF stakeholders in Scotland. Key findings are outlined for the 2014-2020 funding period at the national and project level.

In this essay, I will focus on and deliberate about the idea of «la mulata» derived from the hegemonic narratives in Cuban art, science, and literature of the second half of the XIXth century. Here I am interested in the images, or lack thereof, fashioning the mulatto body and what was their intention behind such signifiers. I use the interpretative keys to intersectional feminism and an interdisciplinary methodology applied to the study of this sexualizing and racializing representations of bodies. I suggest that the mulatto woman is a discursive construct of otherness (re)signifying the objectification of the black body. This cultural artifice allows for the continuation of the harm inflicted on Cuban afro-descendant women by the colonialist imagery on race, class, and gender.

This essay posits that a genealogy of French lesbian literature can be traced back to a certain number of women’s writings of the first decades of the 20th century, and in particular to the period between the two world wars; among these authors are Renee Vivien, Natalie Barney, Lucie Delarue-Mardrus, Jeanne Galzy and Colette. In their poetic and, to a lesser extent, narrative texts, the liquid element often acts as a metaphor for homoerotic relationships between women, but also as an image of the fluidity of gender and sexual identifications, beyond male-female and heterosexual-homosexual binarism.

This article is part of a line of research that investigates the senses and readings of feminism in the field of Argentine culture in the 60s and 70s. It analyzes the senses of feminism that emerge from the volume dedicated to women published by Victoria Ocampo in Sur. The general objective of this is to demonstrate Ocampo’s progressivism by intervening with feminist demands that were barely seen in the country. Then, the reconstruction that Ocampo and other militants make of the history of Argentine feminism will be analyzed first. Second, the different feminist perspectives that interweave in the volume will be analyzed. Thirdly, the answers to an interview with women of the world of culture will be analyzed, emphasizing the mixtures between voices that come from a militant tradition together with other voices that have recently become aware or reject it, adhering to universal male thinking.

Sin embargo, actualmente se mantienen unos evidentes desequilibrios y sesgos de genero que discriminan a las mujeres, asi como un notable deficit de la integracion del analisis de sexo/genero en la investigacion.
