Pandemic of COVID-19 has shocked and spread all over the world, including Indonesia. This research was conducted with the aim to lay out the role of Islamic economic and finance policies, as well as to propose a number of solutions which could be offered to solve various problems in time of the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. By using descriptive qualitative approach, this research attempts to analyse various concepts that found in the research process trough content analysis techniques and library research. The results show that within the framework of Islamic economic and finance, some strategies that we can employ to dispose the social impact of COVID-19 such as: (1) distribution of direct cash assistance from zakat and infaq, collected by zakat and other social institutions; (2) strengthening infaq programs for various needs; (3) strengthening waqf programs, including cash waqf for social waqf projects, productive waqf, combination of social-productive waqf, or cash waqf linked sukuk; (4) superior venture capital assistance for the business sectors or Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs); (5) the qardh al-hasan scheme; (6) strengthening MSMEs businesses; (7) improvement of Islamic economic and finance literacy; and (8) the development of Islamic financial technology. If the above programs using Islamic economic and finance instruments could really be encouraged, the economic surplus would be re-established and the acceleration of economic recovery could be realized, while at the same time reducing poverty and supporting the achievement of equitable distribution of income and wealth.

The ethical treatise of ʿAḍud al-Dīn al-Ījī (d. 756/1355), al-Akhlāq al-ʿAḍudiyya, is a key work in the genre of Muslim philosophical ethics whose primary significance includes the numerous lengthy commentaries extant until today, which depict the ethical discourse over a long period of time from a wide range of Muslim settings. As a prominent Ashʿarī and Shāfiʿī scholar of the Īlkhānid era, al-Ījī’s work played an important role in the continuation of the intellectual genealogy of writers on ethical philosophy, that includes Ibn Sīnā (Avicenna, d. 428/1037), Miskawayh (d. 421/1030), al-Ghazālī (d. 505/1111), and al-Ṭūsī (d. 672/1274). As al-Ījī’s ethics became prevalent within the realm of Ottoman scholarship, the impact of this treatise moved beyond Central Asia and Iran and into the Ottoman scholastic networks, where the commentaries on al-Akhlāq al-ʿAḍudiyya were studied. This article demonstrates facets of ethical philosophy during the tenth/sixteenth century by examining the commentary of a prominent Ottoman scholar of this era, namely Ṭaşköprüzāde (d. 968/1561), on al-Ījī’s treatise on ethics.

Investigating historical sources for positions on animals and animal ethics within philosophy of the Islamic world is a profound challenge, given the quantity and diversity of possible source texts. This article argues that Ibn Sīnā’s (Avicenna, d. 428/1037) philosophy provides a hitherto unappreciated account of animal well-being. By tracing his conception of providence to that of essences, and by highlighting the role of psychological powers in ensuring the attainment of essential goods, this article argues that Avicenna can account both for essential goods and interests proper to individual species and for the capacity of animals to attain these goods and interests. This account rests on Avicenna’s rich teleology, which includes the role of the lawgiver as the upholder of justice within human society. In the end, human goods and animal goods are articulated with the same overarching account, which human beings are called to know.

The paper starts from the premise that the revolutions in the countries of the so-called Arab Spring (2011 and onwards) brought about an important shift in the understanding of right and duty. This trend is related to the transformation of the relationship of the ruler and the ruled in those countries as well as in the perception of work ethics. Whereas the systems of these countries have consistently considered work as a duty of citizens and encouraged them to work hard for the development and prospering of the state, these popular movements have transformed work from a duty and responsibility on the shoulders of the individual into a right of the individual that can be claimed from the state, which is trying to evade its responsibilities – including the duty to provide job opportunities for its citizens. The researcher does not claim to present a comprehensive outline of the topic; this is rather a preliminary approach that deserves further study and analysis. What happened is not necessarily caused by direct contact with the “West” or being influenced by “Western” political philosophy, as we can find hints and origins for this transformation in both classical and modern Islamic moral thought. This paper presents examples of the relationship of right and duty from different historical periods.
