This article discusses the changes and continuities in the structure and function of nagari, Minangkabau “traditional” village. Many scholars consider nagari as an autonomic “village republic” which was ruled by local leaders based on customary law. Even though nagari has been incorporated into the national administrative structure during colonial and post-independence of Indonesia, nagari is still regarded as the source of legitimacy on customary law. Especially in the 2000s, nagari has given more authority in the national legal system in Indonesia. In this article, I describe how nagari in Pesisir Selatan, West Sumatra is divided into smaller units. In order to get more budgets for village management from central government, local leaders and village heads chose to divide the nagari into smaller villages administratively but maintained large nagari informally as a single community bound by customary law. Interestingly, the new administrative villages are also called “nagari” and are given authority on customary law. This created a situation in which formal smaller but administrative nagari co-exists with larger yet informal nagari. What are the consequences of this dualism? By analyzing the process of nagari division, I describe how several different notions of “nagari” have developed in one village.

This study aims to address the challenges faced by parents and strategies to overcome the difficulties associated with online learning. The motivation for this research comes from the increasing number of parents encountering obstacles in guiding their children's education amidst the prevalence of online learning, particularly during the pandemic. Employing a qualitative approach, this study utilizes a case study method to investigate the difficulties encountered by parents and explore potential solutions. Informant selection is conducted through purposive sampling, involving both parents and teachers. Primary data is collected through various means such as observation, interviews, and documentation studies. To ensure data validity, triangulation is employed, and data analysis encompasses techniques such as data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research findings reveal that parents employ several strategies to mitigate online learning challenges, including accompanying and supervising their children, creating a conducive study environment, providing regular reminders for completing tasks, sourcing supplementary learning materials, maintaining communication with teachers, balancing household responsibilities with assisting children, and optimizing teaching opportunities. While this research primarily focuses on parents' perspectives, it acknowledges that children also face difficulties during online learning.

This study examines the relationship between Mohammad Sjafe'i educational ideas and the self-learning curriculum in schools. Education is an effort to help students develop normatively better in the intellectual, moral, and psychological dimensions. Mohammad Sjafe'i's educational thinking contains character values with the active-creative method he has developed, which can encourage students to learn actively and independently. This research is using qualitative descriptive methods. The data were obtained through interviews, observations, and document studies. The results of this study prove that Sjafe'i's thinking is in line with the current education curriculum in Indonesia, which implements an independent learning curriculum. An independent learning curriculum is a lesson plan that provides opportunities for students to study in a calm, comfortable, relaxed, enjoyable, and pressure-free manner to show their natural talents. This self-study curriculum focuses on student freedom and creative thinking.

It is undeniable that the grip of capitalism has been rooted in Indonesia since colonialism, independence to the development of today's globalization. The roots of capitalism in Indonesia have hindered the achievement of the objectives of implementing independence in terms of improving the economic welfare of the people. This can be seen in the Investment Law with its transfer and repatriation system which makes it easier for foreign companies to transfer their profits abroad, the plantation sector which is more profitable for large companies, the retail market which has begun to enter rural areas and the principle of developmentalism which allows large debts to international institutions. In order to strengthen the goal of independence, and to avoid the influence of capitalism which can undermine the stability of the national economy and social welfare, a deeper study of Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution is needed. This research departs from normative legal research. The approach used is a legal-statutory approach and a historical approach. The results of this study prove that the 1945 Constitution has a very strong influence in determining the national economic system. Conducting a review of Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution is important so that the State with its powers in realizing the greatest prosperity and welfare of society.

This article examines the management and supervision of Islamic education in West Sumatra within a highly decentralized educational system. It addresses the belief among Indonesians that centralized governance leads to regional unfairness and hinders community involvement. In a decentralized system, local governments have the autonomy to control their own functions, including education, aligning with the goals and needs of their communities. The growth of Islamic education in West Sumatra is a result of this decentralized system. This article using qualitative research methods such as document analysis and interviews and conducted in Padang and Padang Panjang as representative of Muslim regions in West Sumatra. Findings indicate that the planning process is initiated by the mayor, who appoints government institutions like Social Welfare Unit and Education Departments to oversee Islamic education in the region, following a top-down approach.

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of implementing ethno-cultural identity values in the Bougenville art studio to prevent ethnocentrism. The research demonstrates that art learning and interactions among studio members contribute to the broadening of individuals' social perspectives. A qualitative research approach was employed, utilizing a case study method. The research participants included the head and trainer of the Bougenville studio, as well as the students and community members associated with the studio. Data collection techniques consisted of observation, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The findings reveal that the Bougenville studio has a strategic approach in preserving local identity, considering its location in Pontianak where multiple ethnic groups coexist. The studio incorporates regular training programs and curriculum advancements. Although the focus is primarily on regional culture, particularly Melayu culture, it does not lead to an ethnocentric attitude among the studio's students. The Bougenville studio successfully promotes and upholds ethno-cultural values without fostering ethnocentrism among its residents.

Assimilation is a sociocultural phenomenon that manifests in heterogeneous societies where diverse cultural backgrounds converge. The current research delves into the assimilation dynamics between immigrant communities and the indigenous Mentawai tribes in Muara Siberut Village, Mentawai Islands Regency. The process of assimilation is facilitated through the utilization of the local language as a means of communication, engagement in cultural activities, and inter-ethnic marriages. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, this study involves participants from immigrant communities, local communities, and traditional institutions. The findings indicate a harmonious assimilation process between the immigrant communities and the local Mentawai community, characterized by the preservation of their respective local wisdom values that have facilitated assimilation over an extended period of time.
