This paper analyses how Into the Wild , Into Thin Air , and In Patagonia represent , each in its own way, an image of the limit – this limit being not only visual but also existential. These stories take place in remote places where the protagonists of the narratives cross the borders of everyday life in order to discover extreme, unexplored surroundings. If the intent of capturing the experience of survival in the Alaskan wilderness finds its objective correlative in Chris McCandless’ camera shots, in Into Thin Air it is the images of both geographical and physical limits that accompany the narrative. In Chatwin’s travelogue, on the other hand, the awareness of existing at the edge of the Earth is embodied in its narrative structure where digressions are more frequent than linear progression.

Intercultural enrichment programs: A contribution to curriculum development and study abroad in transnational education 跨文化丰富课程:对跨国教育课程发展和海外学习的贡献

In the fast evolving context of globalised higher education, increasing academic mobility requires constant adaptation from institutions. This paper focuses on intercultural enrichment programs, often perceived as mere “add ons” to study abroad, and usually designed as optional not-for-credit extracurricular offerings. We investigate how institutions can give more value to and deepen the intercultural learning of more students in spite of constraints of time and of formal curriculum during short-term study abroad experiences. Resulting from a close collaboration between academic and administrative staff based at different campuses, this paper provides a critical analysis of the benefits and challenges involved in developing co-curricular intercultural enrichment programs that support formal curriculum during study abroad. Practical recommendations are based on a transdisciplinary program developed in Italy by an Australian university that has branch campuses in different countries. We also discuss the “digitally enhanced” aspects of the program which facilitate the in-class activities.

This article is an outline of the cultural and literary atmosphere of the 1940s, invoving a consideration of Turkish translation policy in the country after Ataturk’s death focusing on two apparently disconnected topics i.e. cultural planning policies and pseudotranslation. Thus, I will offer a brief overview of the Kemalist reforms, which deeply affected the cultural sphere of the country, such as the founding of the Translation Bureau (1940) considering the importance of the quest for a “Turkish Renaissance” behind its activities. Then, my analysis will turn to the practice of pseudotranslation, focusing on a specific case i.e. Topal Karganin Hatiralari (Memories of the Crippled Crow) which was published and presented as the Italian writer Pitigrilli’s last work in 1946.

In this paper I try to answer the question if – and if so, how – the dialogue between Literary Studies and Linguistics can (still) be enriching for both disciplines. The aim is to reflect briefly on those events that brought about a distancing between Linguistics and Literature in German Studies in Italy, with regard to theory, methodology and empiricism. In addition, it will explore the causes of their recent – albeit timid though nevertheless present – encounter. The theme is discussed using German Studies as an example within the general scholarly area of “Foreign Linguistics and Literature”.

In the light of the current debate concerning the nature and function of textual aesthetic information in its relationship with the visual dimension, this anthology consists of theoretical and creative texts by the three founders of the Brazilian concrete poetry group and periodical known as Noigandres . The translations by Sergio Romanelli, Silvana de Gaspari, Patricia Peterle and Andrea Santurbano for the first time give Italian readers the opportunity of reading four texts dating from the 1950s up to the present available in Portuguese in the collection Teoria da poesia concreta: textos criticos e manifestos (1965), consisting of a short essay by Decio Pignatari dealing with concrete art ( arte concreta: objeto e objetivo ) and a statement ( depoimento ) on the function of poetry; a useful definition of the specific domain of concrete poetry ( Poesia concreta ) by Augusto de Campos and finally the extraordinary creative poetic manifesto: olho por olho a olho nu (manifesto) by Haroldo de Campos.

This contribution offers insights and reflections on the teaching of digital discourse in academic English language curricular courses. These considerations originate from pluriannual research activity on the digital remediation of specialized languages and out of the teaching of these contents in the modules of a European project dedicated to the design and implementation of a transnational study program that merges multimodal digital literacy and English for international communication. The paper also argues for the integration of basic concepts of information technology in linguistic studies of digitally remediated English language in order to teach students how to communicate in the era of the so-called “computational turn”.

In Germany Virgil’s work had long been considered a fake re-interpretation of Greek models, lacking originality and life: Virgil himself was seen as a mere servant of power. This essay explores how Borchardt sought to undermine the accepted interpretation of the author of the Aeneid . It will show that while reinterpreting Virgil’s legacy, Borchardt set out a completely new vision of his work and how this vision differs from the fascist exaltation of Virgil. It will focus on Borchardt’s inference that the Aeneid is at the same time a message from the past and a message of hope for the future. It discusses to what extent examining the present through Virgil’s work, he endeavours to escape the disruptive power of the crisis of the 1930s. Finally, it will expose how the author finds an emblematic alter-ego in the character of the exiled Aeneas.
