This study explores the digital tools, activities, and rewards used in a blended Italian language and culture acquisition project. It discusses gamification in online teaching as an important strategy to engage learners, to increase their motivation, and to enhance their language acquisition. The results of the study could provide directions for future research in the field.

In recent years, telecollaboration has proved to be a useful tool in the acquisition of foreign languages and intercultural communicative skills (Belz 2003b; Clavel-Arroitia, Pennock-Speck 2015a, 2015b; Hewitt, Brett 2007; O’Dowd 2007; Su et al ., 2005). This paper focuses on how prepared secondary-school teachers believe they are in order to successfully implement telecollaboration in the classroom. To gather information on their views we carried out an online survey of 179 secondary school foreign language teachers and a series of focus group interviews in the context of a European project, TeCoLa. The advantage of the double- pronged approach to data collection, quantitative and qualitative, is that it provides us with a more complete picture of teachers’ needs.

Chen Xi is an artist born in Beijing, who has spent part of her life in Italy and currently lives in the UK. She is the author of a novel about the life of a Chinese girl in Italy and a collection of postmodern fairy tales. As both a writer and an illustrator, she uses mixed media (mostly literature and visual art, but also performance and music) to convey her creative expression. Since her style draws upon different cultural traditions to shape original, fluid meanings, she can be described as a transcultural artist and writer. This section first provides an introduction to the artist’s life, works and style, then it offers the original Italian translation, Chinese text opposite, of four chapters from her novel and an excerpt from an illustrated story. An interview with the author closes the section.

This review of “Ancor che tristo ha suoi diletti il vero”, an interpretation of Zibaldone 2999 (SEF, 2018) by Martina Romanelli focuses on an observation made on 21 July 1823 concerning late 16th century theatre. This analysis comprises the early stages in a theoretical revolution which will radically change the poetry of Leopardi. Starting from this unusual interpretation, which over the years was to influence other observations regarding Zibaldone , Romanelli returns to a crucial phase in Leopardi’s reflections on the sense and justification of chorus as a medium for poetry. The choral dimension, in all its variants, offers an extensive panorama not only for Leopardi’s opera omnia , but also for dramatic art in general, from the great Dionysian to the modern.

After some observations about the importance attributed to the king in the most authoritative texts of Brahmanic tradition, this essay illustrates the role of the sovereign in Kādambarī , the famous novel by Bā ṇ a. The king embodies the force that permeates and sustains the whole world. He is the first principle of the universe and thus the axis mundi. Extremely problematic is the relationship betweenindividual value and “fate” (karman), to which the very sovereign is subject, although he himself is defined as the “source of fortune”. The king’s value depends on his firm dedication to Dharma and on his ability to lead all creatures to consciousness of their own sacredness. The protagonists of this novel are linked by religious merit, the only element that can change fate.

The article focuses on questions of form and style in the essays of Peter Szondi and Jean Bollack. Style in literary criticism reveals itself as a methodological mode for rendering the individuality of literary texts. This argument takes into account the relationship of analysis and persona of the critic, as well as the notions of clarity and darkness in writing about literature, with Szondi and Bollack representing two distinct poles on the scale between clarity and darkness. As it turns out, obscuritas can be a means of being precise, clarity a means of engaging the reader in providing for more precision.

This study was written for lectures at a Szondi conference in 2016, and is based on an evaluation of the Hungarian and contemporary European afterlife of Peter Szondi’s work, as well as a reconsideration of his literary hermeneutics and approach to philology in view of the contemporary horizon of post-hermeneutics. The study pays special attention to questions that still concern critics today, including the relationship between interpretation and philology, the contemporary debate surrounding the referentiality of literary texts, and the principles of reading poetry. Following up on the lectures of the conference, the second part of the study identifies two fields in Szondi’s work that currently enjoy priority: one is Szondi’s link to the post-war generation of Jewish intellectuals, while the other is the possibility of reinterpreting his theory of drama.

After twenty years devoted to the digital dimension of scientific communication and the setting up of open access publishing, the Florentine scholarly community in the field of Italian and foreign languages and literatures, now presents open science i.e. the responsibility of the scholarly publishing community in managing fully open access publishing formats addressing a hermeneutic circle open to the convergence of data and discussion of research in philology and text interpretation, intermediality and interculture, as well as historical and comparative investigation of literary and linguistic culture. The functional characteristics of this hermeneutic circle are an international perspective and the intrinsic potential of turning the double-blind peer review into an open and annotated peer review.

French reception of Dante throughout the centuries is generally marked by rejection, at least until the first generation of Romantic poets, led by Madame de Stael, rediscovered the Divine Comedy through Rivarol’s translation. Dante’s fame, however, remained mostly connected to the idea of a dark and unreadable poet. This article aims at showing how Jacqueline Risset’s translation of the Divine Comedy , as well as her essay Dante ecrivain , might have led the way to a new vision of the poem.

With this review, we aim to show the value of a recently published volume, that portrays a 19th-century American lady, Caroline Fitzgerald, living in Henry James’ cultural and intellectual environment. Thanks to unpublished letters and a detailed investigation of her life, the author allows us to follow the dreams, aspirations and travels of this unconventional lady, along with those of her two brothers.
