The aim of this study is to offer a reflection on categorization in a crosslinguistic perspective and to investigate possible strategies in comparing the Italian and Hungarian languages. In the light of recent research on how to handle cross-linguistic variation using adequate comparative concepts (Haspelmath 2007, 2018), the existing correlation between Italian and Hungarian object marking will be highlighted in order to show how the two linguistic systems, which at first sight appear to be incompatible, are nothing more than variations on the theme. The idea of this analysis originated with regards to the Vocabulary of Hungarian suffixes compared to their Italian counterparties, which is in preparation and challenges us with significant research questions concerning categorization.

This article aims to analyse the novel Le Ressac (1912) by Camille Mallarme, focusing, at first, on the literary representation of Tuscany (especially, the Chianti countryside), and then paying attention to the role played by the artistic heritage of Florence and Siena. Moreover, we want to give a comprehensive biographical portrait of Camille Mallarme, in order to assess her primacy in the cultural exchanges between Italy and France.

This article analyses some theoretical aspects of so called “concrete poetry”. It aims to exemplify the complexity and aesthetic importance of this kind of work within twentieth-century iconotexts. It also studies the relations between concrete poetry and the methodological acquisitions of Visual Cultural Studies. In this sense, a paradigmatic sampling of authors (Belloli, Mon, Gomringer, Kolar, Pignatari, Ruhm, Williams) is proposed, and the main reflections of poetics both of European concrete poets and of the Brazilian “Noigandres” group are discussed.

This essay briefly summarizes the state of art on research about the relationship between Visual Culture and Literary Studies. It aims to exemplify the main critical consequences the methodological acquisitions of visual culture studies could bring on the literary discourse. In this sense, the main reflections on ekphrasis, iconotexts, iconisms and scopic regimes are discussed, and a paradigmatic sampling of theories (from W.J.T. Mitchell to G. Boehm) is proposed.

This article aims to reflect upon the problematic relationships between Turkey and the European Union. The long lasting difficulties facing Turkey’s entrance in the European family have many explanations and the obstacles are situated on both sides. Whilst the European Community is basically concerned with Turkey’s religious and cultural difference, Turkey’s difficulties derive from the historical formation of its democracy, and of the relations between state and society.

The following text is a report upon the Congress organized by two scholars of the University of Udine, in order to present new and original contributions in studies related to 1917’s Russian Revolution. The main aim of the promoters was to invite best of the Italian experts in Russian and Slavic studies to discuss together in Udine. Thanks to its geographic position and historic heritage Udine seems to be the ideal place to connect Western and Eastern European languages, history and culture. The survey gives a brief account of the organization, scientific program and communications in the two days of the Congress.

The study of the North Germanic and Finnish conceptions of the Other World from a comparative-contrastive point of view highlights several differences, but at the same time allows us to suggest explanations about complicated Germanic concepts, such as that of the soul. According to the Finns, the soul could be a living or shattered soul, while it seems the Germans knew only the former. Thanks to the Finnish concept of haltia , we may assume that the Germanic hamingja and fylgja should be regarded as guardian spirits of the individual and of the kin that are both present during lifetime. The Germans had many Other Worlds, each one for a specific kind of death, while the Finns knew only one. Paradise is hardly described in Finnish sources, although the northland Pohjola has similarities with both the Germanic Valhǫll and Nastrǫnd .

The main aim of this article is to challenge the interpretation of Karen Blixen’s Out of Africa as a sample of autobiographical or memorialistic writing, and to highlight its connections to ethnography and epic. By means of a contrastive analysis of the literary work based on Blixen’s experience as a European farmer in Kenya and the private epistolary written during her seventeen-year-long stay in Africa, the present study investigates the writer’s stylistic choice of depersonalization and aims to understand the profoundly elusive and hybrid nature of the text, at the same time distant from the imperative of reporting and from introspection.
