This article analyses the different forms that death and mourning take on in the making of Rosselli and Plath’s poetics. Starting from a shared biographical event – the death of their fathers – and through the analysis of a limited sample of poems (in particular “Perche il cielo divinasse la tua ansia di morire” by Rosselli and “Electra on Azalea Path” by Plath), our aim is to discuss, firstly, the different meaning that paternal loss takes on in their lives, and then, the divergent way in which their poetry constantly echoes this fundamental absence.

The volume edited by Collini, which can be seen as the last stage in an almost twenty year-long research project, presents files and collections of 17,000 letters to Oreste Macri, housed in the Bonsanti Archive in Florence. An appendix contains annotated transcriptions of his letters to Giuseppe De Robertis, Giuseppe Ravegnani, Mario Marti and Giorgio Barberi Squarotti.

The article investigates the representation of physical violence in Rousseau’s La Nouvelle Heloise . Despite his explicit declaration of writing a novel in which “bad people” as well as “bad actions” would not enter fiction, the writer seems finally to reintegrate authoritarian figures and scenes of violence in the plot. Rousseau conceals the despotic and worrying aspects of the paternal character while trying to underline the harmonic sentiments between father and daughter in Letter LXIII, 1. Julie seems incapable of distancing herself from paternal authority and male control that lies on her body and at the same time the author fails in representing his character’s evolution without guiding her choices through external events.

From Keller 1891 through Lokotosch 1927 to Durand, Garbini 1994, historical linguistics has explored, although seldom, the convergences between the Semitic and Indo-European languages. In this context, in Italy we can place the controversial figure of Giovanni Semerano. A recent study concerning him triggers the opportunity of an assessment of his (lack of ) method and, more importantly, of the recent dialogue between Indo-European linguists and their Semitist colleagues.

With its seven chapters, the latest book by Gilberto Lonardi proposes a personal miscellany and some unpublished works. The fil rouge is an element that has interested the author for a long time, as the centre of a series of publications that occupied over ten years. According to Lonardi’s studies, the poetry of Homer and, with it, the whole aesthetic dimension of the ancient world, represent an inalienable presupposition of Leopardi’s literary identity, continuing to interact with a poetry that constantly has to re-consider itself.

Following the footsteps of present Italian and German studies, the purpose of this paper is to examine the typical words and expressions of the DDR contained in Als wir traumten by Clemens Meyer (2006) – a novel where the protagonist evokes the DDR, a historic reality no longer existing – and to compare them with the Italian translation entitled Eravamo dei grandissimi (2016). Even if in the first instance the focus is on the lexicon, the goal of this research is to highlight the emotional charge of the “language of the DDR”, going beyond mere linguistic and lexical aspects, taking into consideration the cultural dimension of this linguistic variety. This paper aims to determine the main strategies used by the translators in the specific cases analysed, with the aim of reflecting on the concept of translation as a means to transmit both the cultural heritage and the emotional dimension.

Peter Szondi is considered to be one of the most influential scholars connected to the modernization of philologies after 1945. He studied in Zurich in the 50s, with Emil Staiger, the champion of so-called “immanent interpretation” being his supervisor. Szondi’s dissertation, Theory of Modern Drama , could have been a masterpiece of academic heredity – if only it had not opposed Staiger openly in the preface. The rejected “academic father” was replaced by new father figures, i.e. Gyorgy Lukacs, Walter Benjamin, and Theodor W. Adorno. Beginning here, Szondi created his own line of ancestors. Not only Staiger, but also Karl Kerenyi and his own father Leopold Szondi gave way to (the early) Lukacs, Benjamin, Scholem and Adorno, the last two of them being persons who Szondi actually met and accepted as mentors. Corresponding to this system of substitute fathers, there is a sibling, Paul Celan.

This article formulates a working hypothesis on the transformative potential of telecollaborative projects in a foreign language classroom in South Africa. It is based on a project which has been already successfully implemented in Australia. The working idea is to transfer this project into the South African context, where the use of technology may be helpful both to improve the quality of students’ learning experience and to address the transformative demand coming from the South African society. The essay both illustrates the transformational potential of digital spaces of blended foreign language acquisition and suggests how current blending strategies deployed abroad may be re-thought and re-shaped so as to better match the peculiarities of the South African context.
