The article presents a teaching sequence carried out during the summer and autumn of 2020. It is a project that was developed by a collective of French history teachers in response to the needs and constraints of the COVID-19 health crisis. The project consists of asking students to conduct oral surveys in order to collect testimonies from people. The idea is to create a historical source and a memorial library of the containment. Methodological and epistemological discussions complete the process.

Since the 1970s history education has postulated the concept of «historical thinking » as an objective of teaching history. The concrete learning targets have thereby been defined in so-called competency models since the early 2000s. There is, however, little known about the exact mechanics of competency formation in students. History didactics has thus far supported schools by offering competency-based teaching proposals. This paper offers an alternative approach based on the history lesson « Stalin and the great leap forward».

The article inquiries into the state of history didactic theory building and reflection on the category «gender». While newer feminist discourse and queer theory play a role in academic reference disciplines, current curricula and history textbooks still tend to be oriented towards the approach of women’s and gender history. Reflections on history didactics call for a normatively open discussion of gender-related identities. In contrast, empirical findings point to the need to promote critical, reflective gender awareness.

On the basis of two examples from France and Germany, the digitalization within and by text-books of historical and political subjects should be analysed in an exemplary way to see if there are any differences or common grounds between these two countries. A first result is that it seems as if the digitalization also goes along with cultural/ national orders/practices.

In contemporary autobiographical narratives, the experience of « otherness» seems to be a necessary condition for life-stories. The experiences of shame and exclusion due to class affiliation, sexual orientation or other habitual dispositions are at the centre of these educational stories, whether by Didier Eribon, Édouard Louis, Annie Ernaux or Dirk von Lowtzow. In these texts, the past of being different appears in its entire presence, is permanently present, but at the same time changeable and ungraspable. It is the historical narrative as narrative «work on the self» that makes this permanent visitation of the past visible and turns traumatic experiences into historical experiences of otherness for others as well.

During the 1970s, the Swiss francophone television produced several in-depth programmes on the subject of women’s work. Echoing parallel political initiatives, these programmes adopted a critical stance and presented the subject as a matter of public interest. Among the testimonies used, those of single mothers highlight the daily difficulties faced by women who have to work, in a labour market that remains marked by obvious disparities and significant gaps in terms of social protection.

The teaching of gender history is now considered an essential aspect of the school curriculum. The question arose as to what material to offer teachers, since the tools currently used in the classroom were not designed with this in mind. Two teachers from the canton of Vaud and a group of experts were commissioned to create nine teaching sequences for the different levels of cycle 3. This article first presents the aims of these new resources, and then the articulation and content of these teaching sequences.

In recent years, the geological concept of the Anthropocene has attracted strong interest in both the natural and human sciences. Anthropologists, philosophers and sociologists have been challenged by this proposal to open up a new geological epoch to describe the magnitude of the current environmental crisis. For historians, the Anthropocene has the great advantage, compared to other terms such as ‘environmental crisis’ or ‘global change’, to place mankind and time, and thus history at the centre. This article offers elements to answer the obvious and complex question: how has humanity tipped the planet over into the Anthropocene ?
