Repetitive Iteration CORDIC based Energy Efficient Image Compression for Portable Devices 基于重复迭代CORDIC的便携式设备节能图像压缩

The rapid advancements in technology in recent years have led to a massive increase in the exchange of data (images, videos, audio, etc.) between portable devices. This has invoked the necessity for building algorithms which consume low power with no compromise in the performance. In this paper, the above captioned issue is taken into account and accordingly an image compression technique using Repetitive Iteration CORDIC (RICO) architecture has been proposed. The proposed method is power efficient as it uses RICO for Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) coefficient generation, and performs equally well when compared to Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) standard. Results have been obtained via Matrix Laboratory (MATLAB) and they show that the proposed technique performs equally well and consumes less power in comparison with the other techniques.

Maximising the coverage of emergency medical services withtime-dependent demand restrictions: a case study in Shanghai 基于时效性需求限制的紧急医疗服务覆盖面最大化:以上海为例

In many Asian cities, periodic changes in the demand for emergency medical services are concerned, but few existing studies have discussed the time-dependent factor in delivering these services. This study proposes a formula for locating emergency medical services, in which factors of varying demand, time-dependence, cost and facility capacity are considered. A real case is investigated in order to understand the impact of time-dependence on decision making. The case study suggests different solutions depending on whether the design is service-oriented or cost-oriented. The analysis also indicates that the limitations on demand complicate the making of decisions to optimise service locations, e.g., more service stations are required. By creating a design for allocating service sites based on demand nodes in a real case, this study provides a framework for analysing the location problem when demand changes.

A BIM-based approach to automate the design and coordination process of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems 一种基于BIM的方法,用于自动化机械、电气和管道系统的设计和协调过程

ABSTRACT The design and spatial coordination of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems (MEP) have become a major challenge for successful project delivery. Traditionally, MEP coordination has been conducted based on overlaying 2D drawings from different trades to detect functional and spatial interferences between MEP systems. Such coordination is time consuming and of low efficiency. Recently, the advent and development of Building Information Modelling (BIM) have significantly changed this process by affording a visual and collaborative manner. However, it still needs much manual work and many rounds of coordination as the conventional 2D design was still used. Therefore, this paper proposes a well-defined approach based on BIM to improve the workflow and automate the process by developing an MEP rule-based automated engine using Revit Application Programming Interface (API) tool. The engine is developed primarily to help analyse available ceiling zone for MEP elements in the first phase and then extended to facilitate rule-based routing in the second phase. The proposed approach is verified and validated by an illustrative example, followed by a real-life MEP design case. The result shows that with the help of the proposed approach, clashes and the number of coordination iteration are reduced substantially.

ABSTRACT Smart manufacturing is becoming one of the core tendencies in manufacturing nowadays. In the conventional production process mode, the varieties in the production process, manpower processing time, and production scheduling lead to a big challenge in production process management. In order to keep pace with the rapid technology development and market demand diversification, digital and intelligent transformation became extremely essential for manufacturing industries. It is able to evaluate and manage the production process performance in a timely and scientific manner. With the digital model, the production efficiency can be improved and the resources management can be optimised based on the prediction. In this study, the traditional labour-intensive jewellery manufacturing is used and analysed to evaluate its digital model for the resource optimisation and prediction. By evaluating the production process by functional groups separately with the manpower level classification, the digital model could provide an automatic and efficient solution to its production process management system and logistic flow. It eliminates the unnecessary time-consuming working process and enhances the working process efficiency, which is capable of optimising the entire production efficiency as well as performing the resource prediction.

Development of outdoor pollution free zone by fan-assisted devices 利用风机辅助设备开发室外无公害区域

ABSTRACT Vertical City Air Purification System was designed to reduce the aerosol counts at the playground next to a major traffic road. Columns with air grilles are arranged in circle to create a close loop system. Computational simulation is adopted to study three scenarios. The first simulation covers conventional wind block technology, where strong wind speed is created between columns to stop pollutants from entering the premise. However, it is observed that polluted air can enter the development from the head above. Hence, two other options are created, one with supply air directing to the centre of the development, the other with underfloor air supply. It is studied that at outlet velocity of 6.5 m/s, the underfloor system can contribute to around 40% pollution reduction using MERV13 filter, which is more than 24% better than the baseline. Traditionally, outdoor pollution mitigation deems to be contributing insignificantly. The positive simulation result marks a potential for future outdoor pollution mitigation development.

Novel engineering techniques to overcoming traditional challenges in online condition monitoring systems for power transformer 新的工程技术克服了电力变压器在线状态监测系统的传统挑战

ABSTRACT Traditional challenges in online condition monitoring systems for power transformer are usually due to discrepant results between online condition monitoring system and lab-based measurements (e.g. Dissolved Gas Analysis) and unreliable performance of electronic components due to exposure to harsh outdoor substation environment. As a result, false alarms and service alarms would be generated and extra maintenance efforts are needed to tackle these issues. This will exert additional pressure to frontline staff and engineers. These undesired outcomes are challenges to the implementation of condition monitoring scheme. Several novel engineering techniques and effective contract management method will be presented in this paper to elaborate the ways to overcome these traditional challenges in online condition monitoring systems to ensure effective condition-based maintenance scheme and enhance power supply reliability.

Road safety attitudes, perceptions and behaviours of taxi drivers in Hong Kong 香港的士司机对道路安全的态度、认知及行为

ABSTRACT By employing abbreviated versions of Driver Attitude Questionnaire (DAQ), Driver Risk Perception Questionnaire (DRPQ) and Driver Behaviour Questionnaire (DBQ), this study provides a profile of the self-reported attitudes, road safety perceptions and the extent of engagement in aberrant driving behaviours of a sample of taxi drivers (N = 135) and private car drivers (N = 134) to identify significant factors affecting the safety of the occupational drivers. The results show that taxi and private car drivers are more likely to report engaging in speeding violations, and believe speeding is more acceptable compared to the use of hand-held mobile device whilst driving, following too closely or overtaking. Regarding demographic factors, the results show that ownership, work mode and experience have significant influence on taxi drivers’ DAQ, DRPQ and DBQ reports. Bivariate analyses indicate that taxi drivers who report a higher level of aberrant driving behaviours also report less safe driving attitudes. However, an exception is found in factors related to speeding. The results show that taxi drivers who report high motivations for traffic violations also have higher chance to involve in violations. Furthermore, the research has identified a number of differences between taxi and private car drivers that may have an impact on the occupational drivers.

The results show that taxi and private car drivers are more likely to report engaging in speeding violations, and believe speeding is more acceptable compared to the use of hand-held mobile device whilst driving, following too closely or overtaking. Regarding demographic factors, the results show that ownership, work mode and experience have significant influence on taxi drivers’ DAQ, DRPQ and DBQ reports. Bivariate analyses indicate that taxi drivers who report a higher level of aberrant driving behaviours also report less safe driving attitudes. However, an exception is found in factors related to speeding. The results show that taxi drivers who report high motivations for traffic violations also have higher chance to involve in violations. Eco-friendly paving materials using waste PET and reclaimed asphalt pavement 使用废旧PET和再生沥青路面的环保铺装材料

ABSTRACT Waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) represent two categories of waste materials that are currently enduring major recycling efforts around the world. This study proposes a method to incorporate PET-based additives into asphalt mixtures containing RAP. Waste PET was chemically treated using an aminolysis process to synthesise PET-based additives. The effect of the additives on asphalt binder was then characterised through molecular dynamic simulation (MDS) which indicated that the additives increase the intermolecular interaction within the asphalt binder molecules. Subsequently, binders modified with PET additives were used to prepare mixtures containing RAP at various percentages and tested through conventional rheological tests, such as Marshall Stability tests and Indirect Tensile Stiffness Modulus (ITSM) tests. Mixtures with 2% of PET additives and RAP showed improved stability and Marshall quotient values, demonstrating better resistance to permanent deformation. It was also observed that the PET additives have the substantial effect to reduce the ageing effect of mixtures containing RAP, thereby improving the longevity and service life of pavement mixtures. Overall, the results indicated that the usage of such PET derived additives can have a significant positive effect in improving the performance of asphalt mixtures containing RAP.

Estimating the remaining life of airfield flexible pavements considering environmental factors 考虑环境因素的机场柔性路面剩余寿命估算

Abstract The mechanistic-empirical analysis approach assumes a fixed environmental condition in estimating the remaining life of airfield flexible pavements, which may introduce some errors with the real situation. This paper investigated the influences of moisture and frost on resilient modulus of subgrade soil and unbound materials, as well as the influences of temperature on modulus and Poisson’s ratio of asphalt mixture. A time-sharing damage accumulation method, which considered the environmental factors in pavement damage calculation, was provided in this research. Based on the method, this paper proposed a methodology to predict the remaining life of in-service airfield flexible pavements, and a case study was conducted using this methodology. The result shows that environmental factors significantly affect the damage calculation of airfield flexible pavements. Besides, it has been found from the case study that the methodology is applicable for estimating the remaining life of airfield flexible pavements. The final result of the case also indicates that the methodology provides a relatively accurate result of the remaining life of in-service airfield flexible pavements.
