Development in Aquinas’s Theology of Grace and the Role of Saint Augustine 阿奎那恩典神学的发展与圣奥古斯丁的作用

This study explores the place of Saint Augustine’s mature theology of grace in the thought and development of Saint Thomas Aquinas on the same subjects. It begins with a review of Thomas’s Scriptum super sententiis, highlighting its stress on the formal effects of grace and wide appreciation for human merit. It then surveys three significant developments in the Summa theologiae, noting the introduction of divine auxilium as a category for grace, a pronounced stress on fallen human nature, and a reframed account of merit focused on divine ordinatio. The study notes the Summa’s citation of Augustine’s anti-Massilian works. It concludes that while Thomas’s mature theology is indebted to Augustine and Saint Paul, it also offers a reconceived framework for grace which makes Augustine’s positions on predestination, perseverance, and merit more viable for 13th century theology Streszczenie. Studium analizuje miejsce dojrzałej teologii łaski świętego Augustyna w myśli i rozwoju świętego Tomasza z Akwinu w odniesieniu do tych samych tematów. The paper presents the hypothesis that Thomas Aquinas’s concept of ‘secular pleasure’ has been elaborated under the influence of both St. Augustine (De doctrina christiana) and Aristotle (NE book II and book IV). The paper aims at presenting their influences upon Aquinas’s account of secular pleasure. Also, it intends to focus on Aquinas’s metaphysical and psychological concept of secular pleasure and attempts to introduce his moral assessment of it.  It should be also noted that only natural perspective of pleasure will be treated; the theological aspect is excluded from the consideration.

Relation has always been used as a tool to understand the central truths of Scripture, i.e., God as absolutely one and irreducibly three. In this paper, I first traced the use of relation in the Church Fathers’ Trinitarian reflections, specifically that of Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus, and Augustine; then I explained how Thomas understands relation as a special category of being and how his understanding of the divine persons as subsisting relations gives an excellent exposition of Scriptural truths on the one hand, and on the other hand provides a quite balanced and thus accommodative Trinitarian monotheism wherein the Church Fathers’ functional use of relation merge together and the their insightful reflections on the Trinity shine brilliantly.

The paper holds that in Aquinas’ study of sins against nature not only the biblical and the patristic traditions converge ostensibly, but also the Greek philosophical and Romanist heritage come together. The text deals with the question of what belonging to a moral tradition means and refutes the Gadamerian relativistic answer to this problem. The paper ends by showing with John Paul II that only a metaphysical, not merely hermeneutical understanding of the tradition is compatible with the Catholic faith. Streszczenie. Artykuł dowodzi, że w studium grzechów przeciwko naturze Tomasz z Akwinu na pozór łączy biblijne i patrystyczne tradycje, ale także wplata greckie i romanistyczne tradycje filozoficzne. T book under review is one of the latest monographs of the renowned scholar, a retired professor of the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Gerald O’Collins. The book is his next work on the fundamental concepts of the Christian faith. There is no need to introduce the author. However, it is worth reminding that for years he has been engaged in the revision of the basic content of Catholic theology, such as Christology, salvation, redemption, God’s revelation or biblical inspiration. He is also the author and editor of general studies devoted to fundamental theology, Catholicism and more profound understanding of the documents of the Second Vatican Council. The reviewed book, consisting of twelve chapters, an epilogue and an appendix, is an attempt to define in a comprehensive manner the concept of divine revelation in Catholic theology, taking into consideration the conciliar documents, the most recent documents of the pontifical commissions, and the works of many other theologians. The main aim of the author is to describe the most important elements and characteristics of divine self-revelation,1 which achieved its fullness in Jesus Christ. The Circumcision of the Heart as a Deuteronomic Metaphor of Religious Identity of an Israelite 心的包皮环切术作为以色列宗教身份的申命记隐喻

Circumcision is an ancient practice used in many civilizations of the Fertile Crescent and an important reference point in determining the social position and religious identity of members of royal and priestly families, as well as men from lower social classes. Nevertheless, the Israelites who made it an external sign and, later, the necessary condition of belonging to the Mosaic religion, contributed most to the deepening and spreading of the theological aspect of circumcision (Gen 17:4; 1 Macc 1:15,48,60–61). The order of the circumcision of the heart from Dt. 10:16 and 30:6 is the consequence of the theological re-reading of this ancient practice, which was undertaken by the religious circles of the post-exile era under the influence of the painful experiences of Babylonian captivity and the serious crisis of Jahvist monotheism which appeared in the seventh and sixth centuries before Christ. The appeal for circumcision of the heart is a new definition of piety based on the most important commandment of Deuteronomic theology, that is, the commandment of love of YHWH with all my heart and soul (Dt. 6:4–5), and consequently, an encouragement to cultivate a personal relationship with God modeled on the patriarchs, which is based on obedience to God’s law in exchange for His blessing and support (Dt. 6:6–12, 11:18–25, 32:46).

Dziadosz","doi":"10.12775/BPTH.2019.009","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.12775/BPTH.2019.009","url":null,"abstract":"Circumcision is an ancient practice used in many civilizations of the Fertile Crescent and an important reference point in determining the social position and religious identity of members of royal and priestly families, as well as men from lower social classes. Nevertheless, the Israelites who made it an external sign and, later, the necessary condition of belonging to the Mosaic religion, contributed most to the deepening and spreading of the theological aspect of circumcision (Gen 17:4; 1 Macc 1:15,48,60–61). The order of the circumcision of the heart from Dt. 10:16 and 30:6 is the consequence of the theological re-reading of this ancient practice, which was undertaken by the religious circles of the post-exile era under the influence of the painful experiences of Babylonian captivity and the serious crisis of Jahvist monotheism which appeared in the seventh and sixth centuries before Christ. The appeal for circumcision of the heart is a new definition of piety based on the most important commandment of Deuteronomic theology, that is, the commandment of love of YHWH with all my heart and soul (Dt. 6:4–5), and consequently, an encouragement to cultivate a personal relationship with God modeled on the patriarchs, which is based on obedience to God’s law in exchange for His blessing and support (Dt. 6:6–12, 11:18–25, 32:46).","PeriodicalId":37181,"journal":{"name":"Biblica et Patristica Thoruniensia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42538178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The subject of the study is the significance of comparing the resurrected to the angels. Many commentators identify the state of celibacy as their common feature. This explanation is based on some of the texts of Jewish apocalypticism considered as parallel to the answers of Jesus. This interpretation does not accurately render the meaning of the conjunction “but” (ἀλλά), which combines the clause depicting the resurrected as unmarried with the other part of the sentence containing this comparison. The sentence introduced by this conjunction does not elaborate or explain the announcement of celibacy because its content is the promise that the resurrected will dwell with God like the angels who are in heaven.
