Secondary Witnessing and Narrative Erasure in Inga Gaile’s The Beautiful Ones
Q3 Arts and Humanities Pub Date : 2022-12-30 DOI: 10.51554/coll.22.50.02
Artis Ostups
This article engages with the challenges of representing traumatic historical events in a post-traumatic situation when the process of narration involves negotiating the gap between the past and the present, between the narrator and the other’s suffering. Particularly, the article focuses on Latvian writer Inga Gaile’s novel The Beautiful Ones (Skaistās, 2019), which deals with the aforementioned structural and ethical complexities already in its beginning, subjecting it to a series of narrative erasures and thus signaling the difficulty of embarking on a story that would do justice to the impact of trauma. The beginning of Gaile’s novel deserves a close reading of its own since it provokes, in a concentrated form, broader questions about the nature of secondary witnessing, which grows out of researching history, and its potential reflection in narrative form. The article also discusses how a broken beginning might point to authorial values and frame the remaining novel as a sincere and deeply human approach to past tragedies.

The Unpleasant Taste of Death: The Challenge of Industrial Livestock to Literature

Industrial livestock production with its communication strategy aimed at concealing a filthy death and the bad taste of the meat produced has become an important motif in contemporary literature. How to create a narrative about the quiet life of animals that blend in a large herd? A life that is ruthlessly framed by a beginning (insemination) and an end (slaughter) lacks deviation and adventure—it lacks the possibility of becoming the material for a novel. The aim of this article is to examine the poetic devices and ethical aspirations of an emerging genre called the ‘agroalimentary novel,’ which depicts animals for profit and recreates their unique existence worthy of a story. Agroalimentary novels have become increasingly common in Europe and the Americas in the last decade. They raise the issue of taste very plainly: in Latin (gustus) and Old French (in the 12th c., gost and in the 13th c., goust), ‘taste’ is understood literally and figuratively, and is linked to the sense and appreciation of taste. The meaning of taste is associated with aesthetics, and not only with the senses, but also with art, not only with the body, but also with social issues; it refers to both practical activities and norms. How do the themes of livestock production and slaughterhouses relate to the issue of taste? Writers and readers find the aesthetics of the traditional novel problematic. When depicting it, some become inarticulate, while others are confronted with the inability to talk about it. In both cases, they confront the impossible symbolic act of appropriation. Loathing and disgust that is physically expressed and less humanly focused, even more distinctly than in the work of Jean Paul Sartre or in the various accounts of war, have entered literature.

Critics, who analyze the religiosity inherent in Czesław Miłosz’s poetry, quite often link it to the writer’s attitude to history and the experience of time (M. Masłowski and others). They also draw attention to the poetic transformation of prayers. However, the place of prayer in the consciousness of memory and other forms of this interaction have not been investigated in detail, especially not by Lithuanians. A new direction of comparison, i.e. the interactions of prayer and memory in the poetry of Miłosz and Alfonsas Nyka-Niliūnas, determines the novelty of the study. Lithuanian critics (V. Skrupskelytė, etc.) have analyzed religious experiences and the alterations of the Bible in the poetry of Nyka-Niliūnas, also hinting at prayer; however, the memory of prayer as a phenomenon deserves a closer look. Considering prayer as one of the essential religious phenomena, the main object of the article concerns the forms of interaction between the lyrical subject’s prayer and memory, analyzed with the help of literary theology and phenomenology.

Researching Latvian literature in exile is a relatively new phenomenon that emerged in Latvia at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s. As the writers’ archives became accessible, new opportunities for research opened up. In this article,1 I look into the historical situation in the context of World War II, marking out potential directions of my research and a theoretical basis. Using the archives of the Latvian writer in exile, Indra Gubiņa, I focus on the city of her childhood, Jelgava, as a lost place that acquired a symbolic significance in author’s memories, the course of her life and literary geography. The article explores the nuances of Gubiņa’s double belonging, her connection to the place of her childhood and the Latvian language. The methodology used in my research marks out the potential and prospective approach to the creative oeuvre of Gubiņa from the theoretical point of view of lost place, the topography of childhood and literary geography. This kind of research on the life and works of a single writer serves as a possibility to widen the field of investigation in studying literature, taking into consideration a broader spatial context, and working with the new tools of research.
