The aim of this article is to present the primary types of autothematic media information and its non-informative functions as well as the objects and methods of linguisyic valuation in the messages. Information about the reception of a media offering, information about rewards and successes of a medium, information about non-media undertakings of media broadcasters, and information about an offering were distinguished based on content analysis. By means of a semantic and pragmatic analysis of the expressions used, it was ascertained that the media broadcaster itself is rarely the object of valuation, whereas the events organised by the medium, messages included in its offering, the invited guests and recipients are eagerly granted positive valuations. The overarching value is the positive relationship between the medium and others, the valuation is normally overt and intensive, and the examined messages perform various kinds of promotional tasks. The diversity of the contemporary Silesian dialects corresponds to the division adopted by K. Nitsch (1960), apart from the non-existence of the Lach dialects that are extinct in this area. However, the dialects present in Silesia have become richer by the Southern Borderlands dialect, which is used mainly by repatriates living in villages (and small towns) in the area stretching from the Katowice to the Wrocław regions. The linguistic analysis of a given dialect is still determined based on the inhabitants’ speech, that is relying on the usage and function criterion. This opens the prospect of studying language by means of the paradigms applying the usage-based models of language, such as cognitivism, sociolinguistics, and dialectology. The most commonly used variation of Polish is mixed, where the dialect intertwines with the general language and which is characterised by stylistic diversity (e.g. the colloquial and scientific styles); hence, the application of language usage-based paradigms, which enable the presentation of language in sociocultural processes (e.g. dromology, mediamorphosis, and glocalisation, i.e. globalisaƟ on and localisation combined) is important in the research of this kind. When determining dialectal characteristics, E. Rosch’s prototype theory is also useful, as it permits the detection of canonical (prototypical) features of a given dialect, usually phonetic ones, which allow its distinction from another dialect by criteria. This is because the traditional division of Silesian dialects has undergone certain transformations concerned with a shift of Silesian dialects’ influences with respect to Lesser and Greater Polish ones, expansion of the mixed area at the borderline between dialects, establishment of mixed Polish, and reduction of the number of people speaking a dialect only. The diversity of dialects as a prestigious variation of Polish in Silesia attests to the abundance of regional experiences of the lands and requires a further holistic research of the language transformations occurring in Silesia

The aim of this article is to show the extent to which Józef Tischner’s Historia filozofii po góralsku (The History of Philosophy, Highlander Style) is a cognitively attractive source of learning about Podhale’s dialect and culture and the possible threats or difficulties that may be associated with using the work to this end. The author begins his discussions by considering such features of the work under examination as its apocryphal and fairy-tale-like nature and proceeds to showing it on three different planes. From the linguistic perspective, he notes the dialectal features characteristic of the work in terms of phonetics, inflection, syntax, word formation, lexis, and phraseology. In terms of cultural studies, he devotes his attention to the customs and traditions of the Podhale region as well as to the regional cuisine, which found their places in individual stories. In some of the consideraƟ ons focused to a greater extent on philosophy, the author indicates the characteristic features of the highlander worldview, which Tischner captures in his work, and conducts the word-formation and semantic analysis of selected neologisms and neosemantisms, which were used by the author of the stories to enrich the highlanders’ speech with philosophical terminology

This article discusses the issue of a relationship between oral characteristics of dialects with the functioning of the lexis that is specific to them. A dialect, as a speech of an oral community, functions based on an intergenerational message. This influences the “storage” of a significant portion of the local lexis in the sphere close to passive command. This property determines, to a large extent, the limited resource of lexicographic materials, since a considerable portion of the vocabulary is provided by respondents only after a straightforward intervention of the explorer.

This article presents more than 300 semantic units being names of women used in the area of Warmia and Masuria in the period from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century in traditional rural communities. It discusses the semantic diversity of particular groups of lexemes, presents their number, and indicates the extralinguistic reasons which caused the growth of the number of feminine names within certain semantic fields. School equipment has not been a common object of interest for dialectologists and therefore this article focuses on two issues that have not been discussed to date, i.e. names of an item used for removing marks made by a pencil and a verb for sharpening a pencil, crayon, etc. The research material is the data collected by means of an online survey. The geography of the analysed lexemes, their presence in selected lexicographic sources and origin is discussed.

This article contains an analysis of 17th-century proto-names from the area of the Daleszyce parish (Świętokrzyskie voivodship, Kielce poviat) for the presence of phonetic dialectal characteristics. The research material was excerpted from the manuscripts of four parish registers (records of birth) written in Latin. The analysis showed that the examined anthroponymic material was a storage of various phonetic characteristics throughout the 17th c. The Daleszyce historical anthroponyms recorded typically Lesser Polish features (the shft from -ch to -k in the final position), Masovian features (fluctuations in the ge : g’e, ke : k’e groups; hardening of l’), Masovian and Greater Polish features (fluctuations in the -ew-/-ow- groups), and general dialectal features (Masurian influences and the presence of prosthetic consonants). The analysed material contained also various manifestations of hypercorrection with respect to dialectal forms, such as e.g. the so-called szadzenie, removal of h- and j- in the initial position heard as forms with prothesis, secondary nasalisation of e in positions other than ones arising from the phonetic assimilation to the neighbouring nasal consonants. This article might fill, to an extent, the gap in the anthroponymic research on the Kielce region in the 17th c.

This article is dedicated to the presentation of an associative research aimed to discover the psycholinguistic causes of the errors made by East Slavic students learning Polish as a foreign language by enumerating the number of paradigmatic and syntagmatic associations. The research has shown that although foreign students already have an established lexical resource, the government of words, their connectivity in a sentence, has not been rooted in their language awareness yet.
