adults Abstract: The study is an attempt at finding out the place of university education in the process of building a life project by young adults – students from Cieszyn in the Polish-Czech borderland. An important motif is undertaken here of young adults’ attitude to education, understood not only as the process of increasing their level of education, but mostly as raising their life competences and satisfaction with their life. One of the tangible effects of this process should be more conscious decision making and taking responsibility for oneself – for one’s life and choices. The group which can be most directly affected by this are university students, who are referred to in this study as “young adults”. They face a chance to acquire new skills in viewing the world and their place in it, which should grow along with the chance to notice and multiply their own resources in order to secure their future. The young adults studying at university in the Polish-Czech borderland constitute a group for whom this educational stage is a pass to adulthood and the events taking place in that stage co-create the quality of their life. These young adults are aware of the need to keep a high status of their knowledge and competences through profiled lifelong education, which is favourable for the evaluation of their life both as compliant with the developmental task for this period and as satisfying at this

: The article comprises an analysis of intercultural education dilemmas related to changes of both the global reality and identity. First, the author presents the main ideas of intercultural education and reconstructs the phenomenon of assimilation and isolationism of racial and ethnic minorities in contemporary multicultural societies. He recalls various contexts of enclavization, self-exlclusion, essentialism, also in the schooling system, which lead towards the confirmation of economic and cultural reproduction. The contradiction between minority isolationism and materialization of multicultural education ideas is stressed. Next, the changes of contemporary identity in relation to its hybrydization and inner cultural heterogenity are analysed. Moreover, the author presents trends in criti-cism of intercultural education, especially towards the idea of dialogue between cultures. He considers various dilemmas which result from the entanglement of intercultural education in the changes of the contemporary multicultural reality. New challenges for intercultural education are considered in the context of Co-vid-19 pandemic. In conclusion, the author emphasizes his conviction that contemporary intercultural education has a very positive developmental potential in the contemporary world.

: Due to the status of a national minority, Poles in the Czech Republic can make use of the rights granted to them. In this study, the legal aspects of the functioning of the national minority were briefly characterized and the acts were addressed which form the standards concerning the protection of these rights both in the international and Czech law. The research based on the application of the questionnaire method was conducted among the parents and children – the learners from the ninth class of primary schools with Polish as the teaching language in Zaolzie. This was aimed at finding out the opinions on education in schools teaching in Polish. The research results show that for the parents of learners educated in schools with Polish as the teaching language the choice of school for their child is a mani-festation of their Polishness, whereas the reasons why their children attend these schools is the possibility to learn Polish, the fact of being a Pole and the care for preserving their Polishness.

: Guo-Ming Chen and William J. Starosta have invented a research tool to measure the level of intercultural sensitivity as a major dimension of intercultural communicative competence. The tool is known as The Model of Intercultural Sensitivity. Its accuracy was confirmed in Germany in a study conducted by Wolfgang Fritz, Antje Möllenberg oraz Guo-Ming Chen on a group of 541 students. As a result, the method was recommended for the Western European Societies. The article presents a Polish version of the questionnaire measuring intercultural sensitivity together with its psychometrical properties and the results of normalization analysis. What is more, the theoretical basis of the questionnaire, its structure and conditions of use are also described. The Polish version (just like the original) consists of 24 positions grouped into 5 sub-scales (Cronbach’s α 0,85) and meets all the requirements of the so-called psychometrical accuracy. The test allows one to quickly and precisely measure the basic elements of intercultural sensitivity such as: Engagement in interaction, Attention/Diligence in interaction. The tool can be used by scholars and practitioners in all situations that involve in-teraction in culturally diversified environments (business, education, tourism etc.) The article includes the questionnaire with the key, which shall make the analysis and interpretation of the results much easier.

: This article presents the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the acculturation process and acculturation strategies of international students in the UE, USA and Australia. The pandemic has exacerbated difficult and risky aspects of acculturating students and accelerated their acculturation. Epidemic isolation and the information chaos caused by the pandemic make it difficult for students to move from the culture shock phase to the recovery/adaptation phase. Those who were approaching the stage of adaptation prior to the pandemic were stopped and had to adopt the strategy of forced separation. Students choose, or are forced by the pandemic, to take acculturation strategies that do not involve building rela-tionships with the host society: separation and marginalization. Integration, on the other hand, occurs only in the context of integrating with other international students living in the same place. At the same time students express concerns about whether the pandemic and its effects will enable them their further integration.

: In 1989, political and social changes took place in the territory of the former USSR. On the wave of regaining independence in the countries annexed to the state of the Soviets, the Polish national minority became active. It gained a chance to recreate Polish schools that existed before the war, among others, in independent Latvia. Educational institutions were established where children could learn in the language of their ancestors. Six such schools were opened – three secondary and three primary. With varying degrees of success, they devel-oped their activities, “stumbling” over the problems that were imposed on them along the way, changing the education law and limiting the financing from mu-nicipal budgets. Not all schools managed to cope and after about a dozen years the activities were closed. The text presents the recent history of one of them. It shows the many years of efforts of the organizers of the facility operating in Jekabpils since 1994 and closed in 2015. It describes the hope accompanying the establishment of the school, cre-ating its atmosphere and culture. For many years, there was a struggle to acquire an apprentice. It shows the efforts of teachers delegated to work from Poland, calling for the level of education in Polish, opposing the change in the concept of school work, conceived as an institution with the Polish language of instruction, reduced by the authorities to teaching it as a foreign language. The presented documentation of plans for renovation, expansion or construction of a new facility from scratch, created in 2005–2010 by interested entities on both sides of the border, shows the determination of the local Polish community seeking support for their initiative on both sides of the border. However, it turned out that no one cared about the school in Jekabpils, apart from the activists of the Union of Poles in Latvia and Polish teachers. Today only documents and memories have remained.

: One of many modern images is the mutual functioning of people who represent different cultures, nationality, race, and religion. This causes a number of misunderstandings or conflicts in individual communities, motivated by a lack of knowledge about each other’s culture. The increasingly common dissimilarity in modern societies, generating multiple fears and anxieties, makes it impossible to maintain a sense of security. Meanwhile, variety – cultural, ethnic, national diversity – should be seen as a common good for building communities. Thus, there is a lack of awareness that cultural diversity is a value, a specific richness that deter-mines the broad possibilities of holistic development rather than a threat to iden-tity or freedom. In order to achieve this, awareness and knowledge are needed. This text is therefore an attempt to interest the society in the subject matter, which can be tamed and developed through intercultural education, which can take vari-ous forms, including specific fields of art, such as theater or film. These art fields are not only a field of education, learning about diversity, but they are a tool for shaping attitudes, interests, expressing emotions, modelling the way of thinking about diversity. The suggested (selected) performances or films are mostly based on the full conviction that art is not only an autotelic and artistic value, but is a tool that shapes the direction of thinking within a certain range.
