The contribution originates from the project “habitation and habitation politics” in Munich, a subproject of the DFG research group “urban ethics”. Using the example of the Goldgrund art and activist network, it demonstrates how middle-class actors react to the tense real estate and rental market in Munich with diff erent forms of protest. Among other things, Goldgrund designed fi ctitious real estate projects, was active against the privatization of public property and buildings and founded the social cooperative Bellevue di Monaco. The article analyzes this phenomenon at diff erent levels. First, it focuses on the role of the middle class in such activist movements and asks what motivates its involvement. Then, the “subversive” practices of this form of protest are analyzed. Furthermore, it looks into the ethical arguments in this network which strongly emphasize good life in the city and empathic urbanism. Finally, these activist endeavors and the foundation of a social cooperative resulting from it can be interpreted as a form of “social creativity” in David Graeber’s sense, which contributes to the creation of new social forms and institutional arrangements.

Croatia and Hungary have a centuries-old relationship, and although political systems have defi ned their boundaries, shared memories and cultural heritage remain. The river Drava has become a place of such sociocultural sharing, among the Sopje residents on the Croatian side and Podravina Croats on the Hungarian side. In early 2000, cultural artistic societies began to meet informally, culminating in the 2007 offi cial annual shared folklore festival called Dravsko proljeće (Drava Spring/Drávai tavasz). In this paper I present Dravsko proljeće through the pluralism of dichotomies arising from the perspective of festival actors, local policy, regional competitiveness and European cohesion.

Storytelling and mythology are as old as humanity. According to some scholars the role of myths is “to unify the groups, tribes, nations or other entities where they are being told around certain common ideas, values and orientations” (Stugu 2003). Nations, in particular, need a unifying element, which they usually find in mythology, where the character of the hero often embodies desirable characteristics of the nation. Since mythology knew no boundaries until “the birth” of nation-states, some heroes are shared by more than one nation. One such hero is Petar Klepac (in Croatian)/ Peter Klepec (in Slovenian)/ Pitr Kljepc (in local dialects), a hero of the Kupa and Cabranka Valley in the Slovenian-Croatian border region, who still appears in the local narrative tradition. He is a mighty hero with a “dual citizenship” and hero legends about him are part of the heterogeneous intangible heritage of the valley. The subject of this article is the strength of this folklore hero, manifestations of his strength in the border region, as well as, more broadly, in the folklore and literary heritage throughout the territories of both countries, his diverse roles in the creation and mobilization of identities and in tourism promotion.

This article examines how the documentary Vedo Rosso may be seen as a form of Yugonostalgia on the part of the Italian minority living in Rovinj, Croatia. Based on a textual analysis and video elicitation, this project explores the multiple and somewhat ambivalent ways in which this specifi c community has reacted to a visual reconstruction of the 1980s under socialism. A combination of interviews conducted by the authors and interviews presented in the documentary enables the reconstruction of a memoryscape infl uenced by intragenerational factors, as well as by the broader geopolitical changes that have transformed, at several times and in several ways, the Istrian Peninsula and the maritime town of Rovinj in particular. Deeper links between memory and nostalgia were the subject of detailed analysis in what is now vast and rich interdisciplinary literature. This article is an attempt to contribute to the existing debates on Yugonostalgia, in the sense that it shows that Yugonostalgia, as a form of memorialization, represents a complex and articulate way to interpret a mutable and uncertain present on the part of a relatively marginal ethno-linguistic minority in contemporary Croatia.
