This article analyses the mediating role played by the Pentecostal community in Argentina, which emerged as a cross-border space for migrants, providing a link between Chilean and Argentine society during the period 1930-1978. The methodological approach proposed here is both qualitative and biographical. For this purpose, two research tools were used: in-depth interviews and review of unpublished primary sources, which are characterised by containing oral and written biographical accounts. First, the article addresses the migration of Pentecostals to different parts of Argentina. Second, we focus on the formation of communities and the cross-border mobility of their members. Third, we examine the affinity of values towards work in both the Pentecostal culture and Argentine society. In our analysis, we found that the emergence of Chilean Pentecostal communities in Argentina is linked to the migration phenomenon, with a preference to the southern area of Argentine Patagonia and to spaces of protection of Chilean identity and communion for Chilean migrants. It must be noted that Chilean Pentecostals place special attention on spiritual work, therefore, the valuation of material work becomes for them relational, and is mainly linked to standards of satisfaction as well as personal and social fulfilment.

The aim of this article is to identify the main efforts deployed by a techno-epistemic network in the construction and positioning of an energetic imaginary that’s renewable and civic in Chile: the “Energy 2050”. The methodology of the study is qualitative with a bibliographic review design. Empirically, we conducted a thematic analysis on the secondary information from the techno-epistemic network developed by Chile’s Ministry of Energy between the years 2014-2018. The analysis shows that members of the network, through the sociotechnical understanding of energy, managed to “dehydroAysenize” the electricity field, develop an energy policy and position a new socially, politically and technically validated imaginary that promotes an energy transition towards the year 2050. Finally, our discussions with the scientific literature allows us to provide a background for a new study subject related to the implications of socio-environmental conflicts or controversies in sociotechnical imaginary.

This article presents the results of a sociological research on the label flaites used in Chile to name certain groups within the popular classes characterized by their extravagant clothing and criminal behavior. This label, which first appears in Chile in the 1990s, reflects the evolution of the popular sectors, but also the amplification of feelings of social insecurity associated with neoliberal transformations promoted in Chile and in the world several decades ago. The article uses a qualitative methodology based on interviews and discussion groups. It analyzes the meanings associated with this word and its role in the construction of the figure of the criminal as an internal enemy in this society. The article shows that the flaite is not only stigmatized for its alleged dangerousness, but it is also used to draw moral boundaries and establish differentiations between “good” and “bad” poor.

This article examines the mestizo-GothicMapuche legacy in the development and persistence of Chile’s heritage vineyards and the production of natural wines, mainly the persistence of the 15,000 hectares of heritage vineyards that managed to stay alive in Chile during the 20th century despite pressure from industry and technocrats, who questioned the traditional ways of cultivating vines because of their low economic profitability. In the persistence of mestizo winegrowers in their traditional vineyards, elements of the Mapuche worldview and the tradition of Christianity, incorporated by the Spaniards during the colonial period, can be detected. A parallel is also detected between the stigma that Renaissance art historians formulated against Gothic art, and the account of the technocrats of the wine industry against traditional vineyards. It finds that heritage vineyards are underpinned by profound values, similar to those Goethe found in Gothic cathedrals, despite the ideology of the time. Finally, the article recommends to the State of Chile to nominate heritage vineyards to UNESCO, and to reserve the use of Christian and Mapuche symbols for natural wines instead of industrial wines.
