Translating Semantic Cases from Qur’anic Arabic into English 阿拉伯文《古兰经》语义格的英译

ABSTRACT Semantic relationships between the predicators and referring expressions in real or unreal universes of discourse designate deep semantic cases that serve conceptually and functionally central roles in text interpretation and translation across languages and cultures. Starting from the assumption that case roles are not easy to translate interlingually, this study examines a limited but self-contained number of Qur’anic verses in which semantic cases inherent in referring expressions figure prominently but fetter Qur’an interpreters (exegetists) and translators. The findings showed that referring expressions with intrinsic case roles have baffled and shackled the Qur’an translators in focus and their conceptual roles have gone unrendered into English. Their semantic scope and referential range have also been narrowed down through the procedures of analytic explicitation and synthetic implicitation.

Developing EFL Learners’ Intercultural Sensitivity Through Computer-Mediated Peer Interaction 通过计算机介导的同伴互动培养英语学习者的跨文化敏感性

ABSTRACT This study investigated whether online communication among learners from different cultural backgrounds mediates Iranian EFL learners’ intercultural sensitivity (IS) development. To this end, two experimental and one control groups, and a group of intercultural speakers participated in the study. Each Iranian group consisted of 15 EFL learners who were university students majoring in English language and Literature at upper-intermediate and advanced levels of proficiency. The intercultural group consisted of 4 non-native English speakers of differing cultural backgrounds. The first experimental group engaged in intercultural discussions with intercultural speakers, while the second experimental group took part in in-person cultural discussions with their peers. Learners in the control group discussed general topics with their peers. Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS) was used to evaluate IS of the participants prior and after the completion of the study. Findings revealed the outperformance of the first experimental group in IS. However, no significant difference was found between the control and second experimental groups in their interaction engagement, interaction confidence, and interaction attentiveness. Implications of the study are discussed in the paper.

Testing the Applicability of the Instructional Beliefs Model across Three Countries: The Role of Culture as a Theoretical Parameter 检验教学信念模型在三个国家的适用性:文化作为理论参数的作用

ABSTRACT Instructional communication research is critiqued for lacking theoretical development and limited cultural understanding. This study tested the instructional beliefs model (IBM) in three countries: US, Turkey, and Finland. Participants (N = 376) reported perceptions of teacher relevance, state motivation, procedural justice, learner empowerment, and revised learning indicators. Results revealed that the IBM provided a good fit to the data in Turkey and Finland but not in the US. In all models, procedural justice and state motivation were significant predictors of learner empowerment, and learner empowerment strongly predicted revised learning indicators. However, teacher relevance only predicted learner empowerment in non-US classrooms. These results have practical implications for teaching in increasingly diverse classrooms and understanding higher education abroad. This study supports and extends IBM.

ABSTRACT This study evaluates the impact of casting ethnically identical actors in advertisements to elicit a favourable attitude towards the advertisement and the product. Our study explores the effectiveness of cross-cultural advertising and investigates the effectiveness of advertisements. In this experimental study, a national sample (N = 252) was recruited with an equal number of Indian and Middle Eastern subjects, which were randomly chosen across the United States. The results reflect that attitude formation patterns for Indians and Middle Easterners are dissimilar when they are exposed to advertisements containing actors with varied ethnicities

Public Reactions to Immigration in the U.S.: The Effects of Intergroup Contact and Political Orientation 美国公众对移民的反应:族群间接触和政治取向的影响

ABSTRACT This study investigated people’s reactions to Muslim and Latinx immigrants in the U.S. participants with positive intergroup contact and who were politically liberal showed less intergroup anxiety, less realistic and symbolic threat, and more willingness to help immigrants. The frequency of contact and immigration issue salience were associated with the willingness to help. When participants perceived the source of a pro-immigration message to be trustworthy, they reported less realistic threats and more willingness to help. Participants had differential response to Latinx and Muslim immigrants. While participants associated more realistic threats with Latinx immigrants, more symbolic threat was associated with Muslim immigrants.

Discrepancies in Perception of Cultural Differences and Their Potential for Intercultural Conflicts in German-Dutch Interactions 德荷互动中文化差异感知差异及其潜在的跨文化冲突

ABSTRACT We investigated whether the conflict potential of cultural characteristics might be influenced by the importance that interaction partners attribute to them. We conducted a quasi-experiment in which we analysed the attitudes of 74 German and 75 Dutch people towards two cultural characteristics which both Germans and Dutch consider to be equally important and two cultural characteristics which they regard as differently important. We determined whether they were aware of this difference in equal measure. We found that intercultural conflicts are unlikely when people from both cultures estimate correctly how important persons from the neighbouring culture regard a certain cultural characteristic.

Cultural Mediation and Gatekeeping in Dubbing of American Feature Films on Iranian Television 伊朗电视台美国故事片配音中的文化调解与把关

ABSTRACT This qualitative study investigated mediation and censorship in the Persian dubbing of a sample of American feature films broadcast on Iranian national television to get insights into the details of these gatekeeping practices in recent years. The results revealed that many verbal and nonverbal instances relating to sexuality, Christian rituals and symbols, violence, insults and profanity, out of marriage relationships, and sensitive political references were identified inappropriate and edited out in the dubbed versions on account of religious, socio-cultural, and political considerations. The achieved results of the study have immediate pedagogical applications for dubbing practitioners, translators, students, and educators.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to investigate cultural influence on the creation of brand-related posts on Facebook, with a particular focus on the mediating roles of the diversity of user audiences, as well as the intensity of Facebook use. The online survey was conducted with a representative sample of respondents from South Korea, Thailand, the Netherlands, and the United States (N = 802). The findings show that cultural differences at both personal and national levels play a role for social relationships between users and their audiences with consequences for the creation of brand posts. Specifically, as a result of audience diversity, users in individualistic cultures create brand-related content more frequently than users in collectivistic cultures, partly as a consequence of their higher Facebook use.

A Sociological Approach to Official and Non-Official Audiovisual Translators’ Practice in Iran: The Case of Movie Title Translation 伊朗官方和非官方视听翻译实践的社会学研究——以电影片名翻译为例

ABSTRACT The present study is an initial attempt at examining the translation strategies employed by two groups of audiovisual translators in rendering movie titles from English to Persian. Adopting Bourdieu’s field theory, 206 English movie titles were compared with two Persian titles, one produced by official and the other by non-official translators. The results revealed the dominant strategies used by official and non-official audiovisual translators were significantly different. The results obtained from Chi-square, Cramer’s v, and Bonferroni correction tests showed significant differences concerning six translation strategies. The reason may lie in the translators’ habitus formed in two subfields of audiovisual translation, namely offline and online subfields.
摘要本研究是对两组视听译者在将电影标题从英语翻译成波斯语时所采用的翻译策略的初步尝试。采用布迪厄的场域理论,将206部英文电影与两部波斯语电影进行了比较,一部由官方翻译制作,另一部由非官方翻译制作。研究结果表明,官方和非官方视听翻译人员使用的主导策略存在显著差异。卡方、克雷默v和邦费罗尼校正测试的结果显示,在六种翻译策略方面存在显著差异。究其原因,可能在于译者在视听翻译的两个子领域形成的习惯,即线下和线上两个子领域。
