This article presents the history of the words parir, dar a luz and alumbrar as synonyms for the meaning ‘parir’ and abortar, malparir or mal parir and mover as terms to designate the action ‘malparir’. The lexicographic history is revised in each of the cases taking into account both bilingual and monolingual dictionaries. Furthermore, the use of these words is analyzed in the texts, considering the chronology and the discursive tradition. The result of this study reveals the uniqueness of Spanish in comparison to other geographically close languages since Spanish employs the same lexia for people and animals. This is the main reason for the progressive rejection of the words parir and abortar which will be respectively replaced by dar a luz, alumbrar, malparir and mover. In addition to this, it is observed in the latter case —that of ‘malparir’— a circular process that the term abortar —initially rejected— has nowadays recovered as a clear reflection of the social change experienced in this respect.

The Royal Preacher Jeronimo de Florencia (1565-1633) delivered two sermons as part of the funeral honors celebrating the decease of the Queen, the first one in San Jeronimo el Real on November 18th, 1611, and the second one in Santa Maria on December 19th, in the same year. In both of them, the figure of Queen Margarita, who died during the confinement, is glossed over. In these sermons, Margarita de Austria is presented through what it could called the “official truth”, as is appropriate in texts of this kind of nature. She is lauded as a sacred being: to such an extent that she is presented as sweet company for the King; as a loving mother to her children; as a pious queen for her lieges and, last but not least, as a solid pillar of the Church, among other aspects highlighted by this important royal preacher from his privileged vantage point of power. In this article we study the first of these sermons.

The Portuguese figure of the Fernao de Magalhaes/Fernando de Magallanes marked an important turn in the Iberian history, since he carried out the first circumnavigation of the Earth, until he diedin Mactan. However, its historical figure has been altered with the passing of the centuries and the incidence of political or cultural contexts. Therefore, this paper offers an extensive historiographic study that highlights the relevance of the character in the construction of the Modern Age to the present, as well as an interpretation of the character and his own journey.

Prostitution has historically generated, and generates, a huge amount of debates around its organization and regulation. However, different historical researches have not paid special attention to it, leaving this field to the historians of law and medicine in many occasions. In recent years, in addition to the pioneering studies of Jean Louis Guerena, the trend seems to be reversing and giving sexuality, and with it prostitution, a crucial role.

The aim of this article is not to provide a thorough description of all the activities that shaped the commemorative programme of the Museo del Prado´s Bicentenary throughout 2019, but to show a range of key activities in order to manage such an important event. Such actions have been carried out in conjunction with the museum´s day-to-day management and demanded a major effort from the whole team. The administrative capabilities of the museum —under the integral management model defined by interwoven technical tasks linked to the artistic collections and the most purely managerial tasks— have enabled us to accomplish such a great challenge. All in all, this commemorative Bicentenary has demanded from this institution a complex mobilization of human, financial, technical and physical resources, which has in turn required working on three key pillars: coordination, planning and communication. These words seek to help all readers who may have to face the management of a similar historic event in future.

The annals of the European colonization process in Venezuelan lands is marked significantly from the granting and ownership of land to individuals. The extensive common lands of the city of Coro were composed by the economic elite that, in turn, was benefitted by influential political figures. One of the first negotiations, at the end of the 16th century, quotes the Taratara savannas, whose strategic location manages to consolidate the project of military defense of the coasts after the foundation of the doctrine villages of El Carrizal and Guaibacoa, promoted in 1723 by the priest don Pedro Sangronis, and the brothers of Colina and Peredo. The information compiled about the territorial tradition of these savannas offers data on the evolution of the newly created towns and the separatist process that closes the Colonial period (1812) with the partition of the territorial unit of the Carrizal-Guaibacoa indigenous community.

The present study explores the way in which the greater festival of La Rioja, Argentina, known as Tinkunaco or Encuentro, was ritually structured over time. This ceremony, apparently unchanged for 400 years, has however varied the organization of its rituality in different ways, with differences in the level of prominence of the elites and the popular sectors, understanding these as social subjects but that have in common a place of subordination in the economic, social or political relationship. The article makes an interpretation of the changes through the analysis of the objectives of the hegemonic power of each historical moment, and how these influenced its forms of expression from the colonial period to the present.

This article analyses populist traits in the political discourse of the Catalan left-wing pro-independence party Candidatura d’Unitat Popular (CUP). First, the article analyses the success of the CUP by placing the party in what is deemed a competition of populisms in recent years in Catalonia. As such, the nationalist movement is described as a catalyst for populist ideas in Catalonia. Specifically, it will be argued that the presence the party has had in the political panorama of Catalonia can be explained by the way in which Catalan nationalism has been expressed as a nationalism of rupture. This kind of populist language is also similar to that of the Spanish party Podemos, whose lasting effect on leftist discourse puts a certain pressure on the traditional anti-capitalist narrative. In this light, the article argues that the CUP offers a radical alternative which finds its normative foundation in the Catalan people, and that precisely by insisting on the left-right dichotomy it has, to a certain extent, been able to absorb the discontent of many Catalans.
